You got a link to that, would be interested to read that because every source I've tried has said that a professional deal can't be agreed until the player turns 17.

having re read it I’m not totally convinced this website is reliable - especially referring to sterling at Liverpool 17 y o when he wasn’t.

I can't get excited by this prospect in the slightest because there is absolutely NO WAY we can develop him by giving him first team football AND keep him for the next two years.

The system is set to favour the big clubs taking these sort of prospects for next to nothing, loaning them out for 4/5 years then selling them for massive profit.

At the very least put massive % sell on's in favour of the team that developed them.

This will never happen.

The Premier League just want the rich to get richer. Meaning the poor get poorer. They don't care about clubs like ours.

The players themselves don't even care because they all support one of the big boys.

Emphasises the sad state football is in right now.

Honestly I don't think that's enough, for me.

What if Monga goes on to be a generational talent and plays 500 games got Man City without leaving? We get nothing for producing a player of that quality?

I know he's a dubious example because we apparently stole him from elsewhere but then **** us too for that. It doesn't make it OK.

Honestly, the current rules are shocking for this. I appreciate you can't have literal children signing professional contracts or taking them down to major obligations but you also can't let the biggest clubs just take the youth players they want for basically free. The current tribunal fees are an absolute joke and so is the fact you can stall them for years.

Sorry I should have expanded. Major add ons overall. High sell on fees which trigger this conveyor belt of thr big teams selling academy players for huge PSR gains. Big add ons for playing x amount of PL games and appearances for England etc.

With 14 PL teams voting through shit like this, it should be do-able rather than just the usual mob who benefit.

You could very easily say

“Here’s your contract for the day you are eligible, and this will be your signing on fee, which is X PLUS the equivalent of £20k per week wage + bonuses for the last two years”

You could. But it would be worth nothing and either party could decide they don't want to honour it come Monga's 17th birthday.

Not sure I'd put any faith in a gentleman's agreement these days.

I'll be honest, I'd rather that happen and he stays and plays next season, than goes this summer. 25+ games in the Championship next season if he contributes to the level of his potential tial and we'd be looking at a significant compensation fee at the very least.

And if he walks away from a contract, its very strong evidence of what we feel he was worth.

Not sure

if you can attach a pro contract to the end of the scholarship one then presumably it has to be honoured financially ?

does anyone know the facts on this from real knowledge rather than what google and ChatGPT tells us ??

It’s a nod and a wink, not a legal agreement. As long as no contract is signed and no other party is being paid (and no one says anything) should be all fine

Part of the game!

Unfortunately the other 14 are probably all shitting themselves about the players THEY steal, including Monga.

How do you know that it’s a nod and a wink rather than an official agreement ?

How did it all work with Bellingham? He was 16 when he left Birmingham City, and apparently that was £20m+

Monga turns 16 in July right?

Bellingham was 17 when he signed his pro deal with Birmingham and then joined Dortmund

Yeh, that's partly why they retired his shirt, because he agreed to sign the pro-deal despite knowing he was off to guarantee them a decent fee.

For as much as I can’t stand him, imo praise has to be given to Ruud if Monga does sign a contract as well as how he’s eased him into minutes. Focusing on him as a child with his education in mind rather than another body is probably going a long way in his families minds.

Should have been given a few cameo's earlier on but totally understandable that he hasn't started yet in this run of appearances.

seeing that mini interview with him really does just hit home how young he is. When he’s on the pitch you can sort of forget.

If they wanted to (and they don't) they could fix it really easily.

Just make the tribunal fees realistically representative of what a club can get out of a player when they're given time to develop him.

You want to take Monga or Evans off us? Fine no worries but we made 30-40m off KDH, Barnes and Chilwell so that's what Monga is worth to us.

By all means sign him on a contract uncontested but we get 30m compensation instead of the pathetic 3 or whatever.

Oh and you can't use amortisation because it's not a transfer fee so you need to pay that all this season for FFP.

And you DO have to pay it immediately, not in five years time after six different courts and appeals, and you get a transfer embargo until its paid.

There you go. Problem solved.

Every single decision that's been made post Super League fiasco has been to appease those teams. Not a chance they'd ever do anything like this sadly.
