I think the majority of us knew that the writing was on the wall, even before protests and banners and back to back relegations. 

 

£711m (approx) spent in ten seasons from when we won the Premier League, repeatedly signing sub-par players, sticking them on high wages and making little or no profit when it came to departures. To my recollection (Happy to be corrected) we only made profit on Kante, Mahrez, Drinky, Maguire, Fofana, Hermansen, a small profit on James Justin (possibly) and as of this week Fatawu.  Our academy sales havent even got anywhere near covering the losses we've made on the likes of Slimani, Perez, Castagne, Ricardo, Dennis Praet, Adrien Silva, Kelechi and the worst of the bunch Youri Tielemans! (the list actually really makes for grim reading)

 

Defining moment for me was the loss in Rome in the conference league semi final, with the group of players we had at that point, that was the peak, we never ever recovered from that and I suspect a lot of the rumblings that went on behind closed doors stemmed out of frustration. Its quite common knowledge that at that time we still had quite a lot of the senior pros in the club who'd won the prem who would have spotted the indicators of standards dropping and would have callled people out, potentially causing a lot of unrest and with an egomaniac like Rodgers in charge would make perfect sense that Kasper was sold out of the blue and other players were not included in match day squads or being moved on without any real attempt from the club to do anything to sustain any kind of financial stability. 

 

Top has never been enough to fill his late fathers shoes, he was poorly advised, took a too lax attitude and only reacted when it got too much for those he'd left in charge.

 

The blueprint seems to be now that we work with what we have coming through, lighten the load and hopefully find ourselves in a buyable position with our league performances and form. 'We promote next season' might not include the man himself, which I dont think the majority of fans are too displeased about.

How do the spending rules work in League 1?

 

Am I right in saying it's essentially a free for all? Meaning spend whatever you like and then hope you fly through the Championship?

I’d imagine they’d get left alone as Tops play thing.

 

Cost next to nothing to run in comparison to ourselves and they can still push for Europe etc in what in reality is an easier league setup.

Dont think so anymore. Think SCR now applies to League One clubs. We missed the boat on blase spending...they couldn't even get relegated in the right way to allows us do that...tut!
