I disagree

Nothing good will come from it imo

hopefully he will just keep repeating how grateful he is for the support of the USA and not allow the host to push him into more responses that will upset trump.

Ok Neville

I actually wonder whether Putin will use nuclear weapons in Ukraine now. US deterrent simply isn’t credible.

Nah, he's on a back foot & knows it.

We, imo, need to regain our commonwealth legacy & strengthen our militaries where we can. Europe, Canada, aus & nz.

I will get sh1t for these views. But we need to survive.

A lot of people are saying that the ‘peace deal is off’, are completely misunderstanding how much Ukraine have relied on the United States. Europe cannot go this alone, our economies are not designed for it. We can let our elderly freeze or choose to massively fund and arm Ukraine. We can’t do both. Ukraine don’t have a choice, if they ‘reject’ a peace deal, then they’ll collapse.

There doesn’t seem to be any genuine peace deal on the table. The only deal being offered is surrender.

I think Trump would be quite happy with this map of the world from Orwell’s 1984. Probably more likely China would have a bigger slice of Asia including Australia and Indonesia. Also Trump would want Greenland.

In the Trump / Starmer meeting earlier this week, when asked about calling Zelenskyy “A Dictator”, he said “Did I say that”?

Zelenskyy called Vance out after he went on a tirade about Biden being all talk and no action, therefore Trump will be a President of Action, then how he would engage in diplomacy. Zelenskyy then stated the truth that he basically wasn’t a person of action whilst Putin went against the cease fire that had been agreed.

Trump is only concerned about the US. He’s always said that. To a degree, a destabilised Europe plays into Trumps hands. It allows him to bully from a stronger position which is his negotiating style.

Is this not similar to WW2 where the US didn’t get involved, as a large proportion of water separates them for the front line?

Quite frankly, I’m not sure why we should be inviting the orange one for a state visit at this point. The bloke needs banning from entering the country.

Additionally, I think we should really consider strengthening our ties with Europe and seek alternative methods of trade. NATO is basically a dead duck with Trump in charge.

It the UK got invaded by Russia tomorrow, I’m not sure Trump would support us. He’s looking for a trade off financially for support, which is what you do in a business deal, rather than acting on what is morally right.

Trump planned this and saved his fall out for yesterday and kept the meetings with Macron and Starmer pleasant because he knew this was his play.

Starmer made it easy for him by the sucking up approach and the state visit letter - lie on your back Donald and let me tickle your belly.

I think you're right - the queue was final question and then that vile piece of shite Vance jumps in and gives a little irrelevant speech.

Their performance trying to bully and belittle Zelensky in that way was a total and utter disgrace.

It's clearly done to improve their own position, everything's a deal or card game to them - they are ****ing vile putrid ****ers

So with US retreating into deeper isolationism (To focus on 24x7 reruns of The Apprentice along with the daily pledge) we assume that Europe will need to be become more unified to fill this void.

But is Europe the only entity that can provide the security guarantees? (As it will likely take many months for those to have teeth)

Isn’t this a golden opportunity for China to flex its muscles?

China will side with Russia not Europe

I am not so sure it’s that cut and dried once the US moves closer to Russia.

Certainly, if USA can side with Russia, then China siding with Europe certainly wouldn't be that unfeasible.

They might both be communist, but Russia and China don't exactly get along.

That was the most extraordinary exchange between presidents I've ever seen. Folk may applaud Zelensky for standing up to Trump and Vance, but at what cost? Ukraine desparately needs the Trump adminstration on board, but there's no chance of that now. It felt like a puppet show, with Putin pulling the strings. The only way Ukraine can survive is if Zelensky steps down immediately, and someone with more a realistic attitude to their existential threat takes over. If Zelensky thinks Europe alone can halt Russia, then he's relying on a unity of European NATO members which either doesn't exist or which could result in the war spreading across the whole of Western Europe. Do we really want Russian drones attacking Leicester because of Zelensky's spat with Trump yesterday?

Remember the saying - don't bite the hand that feeds you? Maybe it's one that Zelensky forgot.

Re: Zelensky meeting Trump, the whole media circus in the actual Oval Office, can you imagine any other civilised democracy doing anything like that?

Negotiations should always be private, behind closed doors. Plenty of opportunities for sound bites and publicity shots after.

Trump hugely exaggerated how much they've been feeding them.

Using a nuke would be insane in these circumstances. Putin would only do that if his regime was about to die and we’ve never been further away from that.

They could have had the meeting with no camera there and no one would have really known what went on but they want to run the show like a reality tv series and it backfired showing them up for what they are. I don’t think Vance would last 5 mins if he was president .

also like how Zelenskyy went and said thank you for support to every country that offered support after they said he never said thank you to them

Russia is not a communist country. It’s one of the most appalling examples of an ultra capitalist country where a rich 0.00001% own everything while the plebs suffer.

Russia is a plutocracy like us and the US but with a larger dose of kleptocracy for good measure.

Although to be honest, it does feel like Trump thinks or at least acts like he is just pumping the ratings on the this most irreverent of Truman shows.

Trumps a business man, he’s let that play out in public on purpose. Maybe so he can go back to Russia in negotiations and use it as a tool to get a better deal.

He will want that war to end as it is better for the US and world economy. Also the news that the UK could get a trade deal is massive. The EU has Zero growth, the US is going to be driving a lot of growth and we need to tag along with them to boost our own economy that’s why the state visit is important.

And it’s all probably to take away from the fact they promised people stuff in their own country they are not going to do so they are trying to distract them with other stuff to get them angry about

Call me old fashioned, but I'm not sure "the deal" should take precedence over human lives.
