From Gov.uk website: Causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink You may get: life imprisonment an unlimited fine a ban from driving for at least 5 years an extended driving test before your licence is returned The usual sentence is 14 years. 14 years is at the top of the scale, since no one actually gets life (the max term). The range is between 5 -14 years and most offenders will get nowhere near that 14 figure. https://www.stuartmillersolicitors.co.uk/sentence-for-death-by-dangerous-driving-offences/

Not even anywhere near halfway through and this comes up: Quote Increasingly, the city's large Muslim and Hindu communities are at each others' throats. The guy literally just arrived on a train and he's come to that conclusion. What a load of bollocks. I find these kinds of article very irritating. For several years it's been rammed down our throats that ethnic minorities don't integrate, or should integrate more. But the way that article is written is ridiculously demeaning and belittling to such communities that are being begged to mix. Could the writer have put them down any more? In a time where we should be embracing our multicultural-ness, this one just puts people down even more. It even mentions 'failing to integrate' in the article later on before I wrote those bits above. It's no wonder they don't when they're portrayed in a national newspaper to have ruined a city or disrupted it to such an extent that they dare to have businesses on a main street. Is that not integration enough, perhaps? Hindus have becomes more 'radicalised'. What a fvcking despicable word to use. Again, such negative rhetoric used needlessly. 3

Lionator Posted 11 May 2025 Posted 11 May 2025 (edited) So all the hyperbolic crap in Kyiv yesterday isn’t leading to a ceasefire but Putin has offered direct talks this week with Ukraine, which seems like progress. Will be interesting how Starmer/Macron/Merz respond as Trump basically just endorsed Putin’s position. Edited 11 May 2025 by Lionator

Very very few death by dangerous sentences are any where near 14 years, even when the offender is over the drink drive limit. If you halved it you would be much closer to the reality.

The Europeans will welcome the talks and express their hope that they quickly lead to a ceasefire as per their declarations yesterday Putin is just stalling trump is looking for anything he can sell as a positive His simplistic approach to complex scenarios is falling apart before his eyes. And he can’t understand it cos someone told him it would be easy. 2
davieG Posted 11 May 2025 Posted 11 May 2025 As I see it they'll never fully resolve it Putin wont give up the Crimea and Zelensky doesn't have the authority to cede it to Russia. While the war continues Ukraine can't hold elections even then it would need a vote by the Ukrainians to give it to Russia and how do they decide which parts of Ukraine are still Ukraine and not Russian. 1

We found out today that Russia has been trying to negotiate since 2022 and it was Ukraine being obstructive to peace. I think obstructive to peace in Russian translates as the ****ers kept firing back I stead of just dying.

If this is the case, then I reckon there are two options: - Sit down and talk and come to an amicable agreement about differences - Let things escalate until the obvious outcome occurs (lots and lots of death and suffering of innocent people regardless of demographic) and when enough blood has been spilled, then talk. Always thought the second option seemed rather pointless and redundant but it seems that others think differently.

Obviously Russia is the illegal aggressor but the wild thing about this war is the tit for tat childish approaches of both sides in trying to frame the other as the bad guys (is it a Soviet thing). Both accusing each other of breaking ceasefires while both send drones and missiles over the borders. It’s funny because we’re evidently closer to an agreement than at any point, but it still feels so far away. Ukraine/european thinking is still that trump will eventually come around and destroy the Russian economy and send the heaviest non nuclear munitions going, it’s just not going to happen. They need to take this opportunity now, allow Russians to make a fool of themselves in front of a mediator (Erdogan) and let nature take its course Edited 11 May 2025 by Lionator

So far a ceasefire means a loud announcement on twitter whilst firing large numbers of missiles at civilian areas. We haven't had anything like a ceasefire as yet.

Lionator Posted 11 May 2025 Posted 11 May 2025 US / China trade deal seems to have been agreed, which is good for everybody I think.

Wonder what levels of tariffs constitutes a deal ?? the 145% doesn’t kick in on imports arriving USA till 25th may. Hence pretty sure that they’d come to some kind of deal before then.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 11 May 2025 Posted 11 May 2025 Just saw on the news that cheap immigrant care workers will soon be a thing of the past as work visas are tightened. So expect to pay much more for your care home fees in future. I can't see rich care home owners (nor the government) absorbing the costs. I do wonder how many people who bang in about cheap immigrant workers would want any of their family doing those jobs for that money. A huge part of the problem is that British people just won't do it. Consistently our governments bang on about education and increasing skills... whilst we have a huge shortfall in simple manual labouring jobs Go figure. 2

I think a lot of the powers that be are relying on automation to take over a lot of manual labour jobs rather soon. Can't see it filling the gap that is needed in any way near a satisfactory fashion, but that appears to be the path being taken.
