XG doesn’t mean much does it

do we need to do this every season? Yes. It does long term. Assessing a one-off game it's overblown, because variance exists, but your long term trends are important and will give you a strong indication of where you're likely to finish in a division. This is why some of us were sounding the alarm for relegation under Rodgers in summer 2022, because our xG stats were indicating concerning trends.

eh, after nearly a decade of it being in common use, people who call themselves football fans should have a basic understanding of it like they do possession %. It's really not complicated.

We should have too much quality.

I see this sort of thing written quite a bit but I'm really not sure about how true it is. I think Fatawu, Mavididi, BEK (who we might but get to keep) and Winks (if he plays) are too good for the division.

Beyond that, Ricardo is another 2 years older since we were last in the championship, Faes, vestergaard who got us up last time might be good enough but we are playing a different system.

Monga, Nelson look quality but it's very early.

The rest are bang average or below.

Yes we do because it’s always assumed that over time your goals scored will match your xG roughly, but you’re just as likely to stop creating chances as starting to score them. It’s definitely in the bottom 2% of statistics.

Just say you don't actually understand xG and be done with it. It's a measure of the quality of chances you're creating. Top quality strikers will outperform their xG, dogshit will underperform it due to the whole nature of strikers, but it's a chance creation metric and intended to be used as such. Use it to evaluate trends, like are the quality of chances you're creating going down?

We're walking this league, bar something unprecedented happening with the points deduction.  It is full of crap.  I thought that last time and if anything it has got worse.

Our worst players are decent at this level.  Our best players are far, far too good.

We have a manager who seems vaguely competent as well, which helps.

If we keep Bilal and Fatawu and sign a decent forward we will break all records.

I typed this with my top lip slightly curled in contempt at the standard of the championship.

Saying all that about the championship I watched the Charlton game earlier and I was very impressed with Apter, good pick up - only 22 and has quite a languid, elegant style but really excellent delivery, caused Watford a lot of problems.

That's 9 players who are either too good for the division or look quality. It's not just our first XI, but our strength in depth that shows promise.

First XI is probably going to be, as things stand:

GK: Stolarczyk

RB: Ricardo (C)

CB: Okoli

CB: Nelson

LB: Justin

CDM: Skipp

CDM: Winks

RW: Mavididi

CAM: El-Khannouss

LW: Fatawu

ST: Ayew

Add a decent striker and that's far too good for most at this level.

But then there's our ressies. Let's say these are our seven on the bench.

GK: Begovic

CB: Faes

CB: Vestegaard

CAM: Alves

RW: Monga

LW: Decordova-Reid

ST: Daka

At Championship level, that's a silly level of quality and options. Imagine somehow marking Fatawu out of the game for an hour and then having Monga running at tired legs for the last half hour. Or Daka coming on with the press for the last 15.

And that's before we add any more or consider players like Page and Aluko.

I'll add to the scout reports: I watched West Brom against Blackburn and they were both shit. Price and the two centre backs were good for West Brom and that was about it in terms of quality

Always nice to see Sheffield United losing but what a strange appointment Sellas was. I’m no Wilder fan but he got 90+ points last season, they won’t reach that this season.

More importantly was your top lip curled as you typed this?
