Can somebody please enlighten me as to how players are acquired. Does the manager say I want so and so, try and get him; does he say I want a striker/CB and is presented with a list of 3 or 4 to choose from, or does he have no say at all.

According to Rob Tanner on BBC WYC this week - manager identifies where he wants to strengthen, the scouting team identify A, B, C candidates and when they get a yes - over to JR to do the deal.

Which makes sense on paper (and I'm sure you agree with this) but it requires a DoF with a proper vision for what they want the club to look like and the wider strategy. So when manager decides he wants to pick one of his favourites or an agents suggestion, someone says 'not good for LCFC'

Well it's obviously a fantastic system  .... you carry on chaps .... you lead others will follow... thats if league 1 or 2 is the aim ... and judging by the contacts Rudkin has dished out how can anyone say that the process is nothing other than shocking and worthless given the amount of contracts we have let run down and let players go for free or less than any value

Coaching staff draw up a list and liaise with the recruitment department as to what player profiles they want, and sometimes add examples. Usually it’s identifies in shortfalls within the squad. 
 

The recruitment team go away a scout for those profiles, they then draw up a list of A, B and C. The coaching staff and Manager then look over the list and agree / make any amendments. The manager will then ultimately sign off on the players he wants off the lists. The list then goes to Top, who will sign that off, he will then pass it to John Rudkin who will negotiate the deals. 
 

It’s been the same for ages and it’s how it runs now. Cooper was given the brief of survival at all costs, so he placed emphasis on experienced players, with one stellar young signing. 
 

The best evidence of this working is Maresca, he was able to articulate exactly what he wanted, and we went and got it. 
 

Last year’s window was brilliant, and that exactly how it should and can work. What happens when it goes wrong is what happened under Cooper, but it wasn’t entirely his own fault because he was given a brief and worked off this brief. 
 

It’s a collective approach, but largely falls in the hands of the Manager, Coaching staff and scouts. And then to Rudkin to negotiate the deals.

This is exactly it, a model that serves you well if you consistently bring in managers who play the same/ similar style of football like Brighton.  
 

This allows players with unique attributes,  players like Winks and Vestergaard who are quite specialist in areas ( ball playing ) and very limited in others, to constantly be valued by the manager and always suit the team. 

However when you hire managers who differ vastly from one another in their style, as we have, and allow them to recruit for their desired style, you end up with a squad like ours, with players that don't compliment one another, leaving a patchwork team and ultimately a poor one. 
 

Furthermore, if you put your trust in managers recommendations and give them the final say, you allow for personal bias and ego to dictate signings. Rodger’s was evident here in his appointment of Congerton and his signings with us.  
 

FFP has meant that the need for a singing to be successful is vitally important, as the ability to sell them, especially with prem clubs having to pay a premium in wages and fee’s is so difficult if they don’t do well, as has happened with us with players like Daka and Bouba.
 

Ultimately that is why clubs now leave signings to directors of football and their analysts, as they can recruit players consistently suiting the style of play the club has broadly decided to adopt. We need to shift to this model, it has its downsides, but ours has failed us.

I think the Coulibaly one is easily explained. This summer 3 of our 4 fullbacks will have a single year left on their contracts, so there's a very good chance we'll look to move at least one on. The only remaining fullback bailed last time we were in the champ and is dogshit. Coulibaly covers the eventual holes left.

Really weird time to decide you need to sign that full back, so you're probably right. Not easily explained with regular logic though, this is special Leicester logic

I believe he was on the list of players Enzo was looking at for this season. He signed Coulibaly for Parma, so could be something in that?

What normally happens is

Manager says I want this player

The player and agent go to Rudkin and say my player wants £40000 per week,

To which Rudkin replies we can't give him that per week, how about £80000 per week.

Suppose the manager drafts up a list of potential targets he thinks improves the squad and then a meeting with the board would pick out where/who is a financially good target for the club. Unfortunately we have clowns making these decisions it seems.

It’s nowhere near as cut and dried as it used to be that a manager is responsible for recruitment. They should, however, be part of the process given it’s them who take accountability for the performance of the team and the players brought in. 
 

I’m actually reassured by the suggestion that Cooper was involved in the summer transfer window. There has been much talk about whether it was right to sack him (given the subsequent performance of RvN), but that window alone is grounds for his instant dismissal.  
 

If it was up to me though I’d get rid of the entire team and start again

A lot of our recruitment has been poor. We’ve been fortunate in the past by having a strong foundation that has allowed poor recruitment to go unnoticed 

 

Half the problem hasn’t been the poor calibre of signings, it’s the huge wages/contracts they’ve been given aswell as allowing players with value to leave either for free or at a reduced fee. 
 

Pearson and Puel the only ones who have really built any foundation here and added with quality

Guardian have an article "Relegated players who will be targets for Premier League clubs this summer". Lists Fatawu, El Khannouss, Ndidi and Hermansen, as expected. Would really love to know the club's intentions. I can see we may have to sell, but if we sell on those four, I can't see us getting promotion next year. I know a number of fans have said that the overall standard in the Championship isn't high, and we should fairly easily make the play-offs, but I don't have a good feeling about next year. I was confident we would come back up in 23/4, but this feels very different. I'd love to be wrong, but.....
