I think one of the reasons Maresca used him further forward, as he can press well and tackle. So having him that higher up allowed us to break up play and turnover higher.

 

The issue having him deep is that he can pass and move like the other midfielders.

I’d say it looked like a penalty to them, however it’s difficult to tell on what appears to be a dial up connection from Austria.
