Interesting to read in local paper after Oxford  defeat at Hull a CB is needed:

Last season, the U’s had both Brown and the exceptional Ben Nelson on loan from Leicester City who could play the left-sided centre back role to a high standard.

He needs an extended run in team: he must surely be better than Vestergaard's woeful defending to concede winning goal v Preston

I've never understood why Nelson doesn't get selected as the LCB when he does play for us. He's both footed and on all loan spells he's been commended for being able to play the left side.

We put Faes there and him at RCB last week. Bizarre.

Over on their fan forum they clearly rate him highly and keep hoping they can get him back, either by us selling him to Chelsea and them loaning him out to them, or by making us an offer as we're not playing him. Fortunately for us they don't seem to have much of a budget (magic beans were mentioned).

Sit on the bench / forced to play in U21s for 2 years then walk away!!

If they are not going to play him, at least loan him again this year. Same for Alves.... Why would the new crop of youngsters sign up to stay here??

He will get a load of first team games this season. He is our 3rd choice so could easily find himself starting most games if we get an injury or he pushes another starter out.

It's also important that we send a message to young players that they need to TAKE their chance when they get it. Monga did and now he starts. Page did, and now he starts. Both Alves and Nelson got a chance against Huddersfield and let themselves down. Now that's one game and not a reflection of their ability but it SHOULD and does have consequences. Those being a setback to their hopes of starting.

They will get more chances this season, we need to hope that they now understand how important it is for them to take it.

True, although I would be shocked if Faes is still here when the window closes. Okoli needs a solid game today.

Vestergaard was awful against Preston. Worse than Nelson against Huddersfield.

He still starts today, we need to move away from this mentality as a club where the senior pros consistently get away with murder whilst the academy players need to play well every time theyre on the pitch.

The standards should be lower for academy players, not higher.

Vestergaard has also scored a goal that got us our only win this season and I don't think he WAS worse than Nelson against was Huddersfield. If VAR was at play in that game, Nelson would have given away 2, maybe even 3 penalties. On TOP of giving the ball away consistently.

I'm not advocating for Vestergaard. He has been terrible for most of his time here but not only has he shown more consistency at this level than Nelson (who admittedly  hasn't had as much of a chance) but under Marti (which is all he can go off) he has contributed more than Nelson has.

I agree but, for me, this lad has been around the first team since he was 16, had a rough first loan and 2 successful loans with the latter at Oxford playing against the better teams in this league. A succession of managers come in and start again playing senior players... When chances come it's difficult if you haven't been playing. He needs to continue to play regularly to push him on... He knows this and the club should too. Play him or loan him but if you expect him to say doing neither hell walk for free or be should for a low fee. All indications have been that he could be an England player but he won't reach that value here unless the club develops him and his value

It’s like the managers are blinded by the wages. Playing the big earners over a lad who is probably their equal at worst but will be on substantially less money.

To be fair to the manager he was pretty poor against Huddersfield.

Vestergaard was poor against Preston and still started next week and for the foreseeable future.

Can't move past a poor game if you never play again.

And the rest of our centre backs are constantly poor yet get game after game to be continually shit. Academy players get one game and are written off.

I hope he gets a move elsewhere. He clearly has a lot of talent but it will be wasted if he stays here.

Actually is the sort Palace would come for if Guehi goes. They have done well taking young talent from the Championship before.

For me it would be Nelson plus one of the others, but I can also understand the manager pov.

He's shown with Page he's willing to give youth a chance.

Page and Monga have only started when no other via senior option is available in that position. For Nelson he's got 3 other CBs to fight for two spots with. So far Cifuentes has only been a minor improvement on past managers for picking academy players but its very early days yet.
