I’ve personally heard that this is incorrect.

I'd also heard he'd be very keen to come back but hasn't been asked...the reason being a certain individual sounding a lot like Ron Judkin.

Yeah, heard similar. Even if it was to help King.

If there’s truth in Deano, wonder if Fuchs might be tempted to come in with him after working together at Charlotte. That would be even more compensation mind and damn harsh on Newport.

He'll be on the national living wage at Newport, it will be nothing compo wise.

It's the sort of name I'm after. Somebody with experience and with success in the championship. I've been calling for Mowbray but Dean Smith would not be the worst call at this level.

I'm ok with Smith. Surprised people aren't really.

I'm astonished people aren't okay with it, if it's a serious option. I think he might be out of our league right now rather than the other way round.

Perhaps some would prefer Coleman (who went down from this league and never won a promotion from it), Rowett (who went down from this league, was on his way to going down a second time, and has never won a promotion from it) or Martin (who has won a widely expected promotion from this league, but also done some very middling jobs in it, and been downright awful at any level since his sole career highlight).

I understand that when a club is in trouble, your options often look a bit like this. But if you add Dean Smith - who has generally done a decent job at most levels, won a promotion from this division and then laid the foundations for future success by keeping that club up - to the pool, it looks a bit better to me.

Okay, he's not quite the Big Nige figure so many crave. And okay, he went down with us in 2023, albeit after only six weeks in charge, with the club already in the drop zone, and with a ppg which, if he'd been given the two extra games he should have been given, would have kept us up. But he's the right sort of profile, and might stand a chance at getting us more organised, and demanding more of the group.

We don't have to be negative about everything! I think we'd stay up and potentially be able to build beyond that with him.

I'm not not OK with Smith. He's fine I guess. Fairly underwhelming but we are where we are.

The main reason it's horrifying isn't him individually, it's just that the most credible rumours seem to be imply we've considered a dreadful manager we've liked previously (Martin) and two former managers (Enzo and Smith.)

The horrifying part is the simply staggering lack of any kind of creativity or footballing awareness at all. If they haven't previously managed Leicester or Southampton, we don't have a ****ing clue.

Oh yeah - i dont deny that.

I suppose my view is I dont find appointing Smith horrifying (vs Martin). I agree that there seems to be no skills shown to look beyond such a narrow pool, which is staggering (but not surprising).

If we can afford to pay compensation for Smith then I’d rather we pay it for someone more long term like Skubala.

He's a PE teacher FFS

I'd certainly take Smith over literally anyone else that I think has been even vaguely credibly linked.

It'll be an unpopular opinion but I'd take Smith (who is probably more likely to bring Walsh with him than Nige at this point) over Pearson on his own.

He’s also done a very good job at Lincoln, the FA previously and was highly thought of at Leeds.

Mourinho was a translator once.

Everyone starts somewhere and I don’t think he’d be the worst appointment. He’d be more ideal in the summer though I’d imagine, if that is the option we persue.

What has he achieved at Lincoln? I'm out the loop a bit

Pearson was complimented by Shakey and Walsh. They worked excellently as a trio. I don’t think any of them had the success elsewhere as they worked as a team.

I'd take Smith over a lot the others being mentioned. He's got a decent pedigree in this division

If we can’t get Pearson back, then Smith is a very good alternative to come in and do a very similar job.

Smith if he brought Walsh as an advisor would probably get people on board.

Uninspiring but it’s where we are at.

Just my opinion but it's the sort of untested, creative appointment I absolutely don't want. That's the kind of thing you do when you're on a positive place and are rolling the dice on a new idea that could turn good into incredible, safe in the knowledge you're not going down. We're not in that place at all.

2nd in League 1, 2 points behind Cardiff.

Lincoln fans I know rate him. I wouldn’t have him as my first pick, however apparently the football style is good to watch.

Unfortunately I don’t think he’s in a position health wise to be considered.

Isn't true. He wants the job. They just won't touch him because it's all about self-preservation for those two.

I agree. That’s why I’d do it in the summer if that’s the plan. Similar to what we did with Maresca.

First priority is staying in the division.

He was.
Everyone has to start somewhere.
He’s done very well at Lincoln with limited resources and has experience of developing young players.
