Is it me - or did it all start going wrong when Wes Morgan retired?

He was a leader, a captain, an organiser, always gave everything.

We have just never replaced him. Any successful teams always have someone at the back who organises and is committed.

Our two most successful teams in recent history had Matt Elliott/ Steve Walsh and Wes Morgan and Huth. And we had a very good team with Harry Maguire at the back.
Next season we literally need a brand new defence.

Miss Wessy Morgan though :(

Agreed. I think regardless of whether we are in the Championship or League 1 next season, we will need 2 new central defenders, ideally of the mould of those you have mentioned. Captains and leaders.

Problem is, I can’t see us shifting Vestergaard. Maybe Faes. Okoli could probably get a move back to Italy so I reckon maybe we end up with Vestergaard as the only central defender left. But will we remove him as a starter?

Same I miss big Wes and huthy. I’d like to see Nelson given a run potentially a future captain.

IT WENT WRONG THE DAY THE SON GOT THE GIG

ITS BEEN A DISASTER EVER SINCE  !!!

END OF ….

Really? He died in October 2018. In the 2 seasons before this we finished 12th and then 9th.

After it happened we finished 9th again, then 5th, then 5th again and then 8th.
Short memories…..

No coincidence when Kasper leaves was the season we got relegated. Danny Ward cost us big time as no1, he barely played for the last couple of seasons and then suddenly Brendan thought he perfect replacement to step up and replace Kasper.

Just think Kasper was one of top keepers in europe to then replace him with Danny Ward.

Things went wrong when we stopped signing leaders to replace those leaving/retiring including big Wes yes.

Huth, Morgan. Kasper, Fuchsy. Those key roles have been replaced by players who don’t lead.

Look at our senior pros - Verstergaard, Faes, Winks, Ayew, Reid even Riccy. None of them are particularly strong willed and none are true inspiring leaders. Players like Vesty and Faes are so caught up with their own self that they don’t provide the inspiration that a leader needs. It’s a real failure in recruitment.

A failure of recruitment, squad building and how to build successful organisations (let alone teams). We are gutless, spineless and we’ve been taken for a ride for years (we were just as culpable in wages dished out) with bad eggs coming here for a big pay day. I’m absolutely sick of it.

I took my 7 year old daughter to her first game this weekend. She did so well to hold interest for 60-70 mins, and my mum came along as well. My mum has never been to a game in her life and instantly recognised the lack of effort and work rate. Sometimes we feel we’re too close to it, but even 70 year old women with no interest in football notice how bad we are.

I’m past the point of attending games to enjoy the 90 mins. It’s a day out, but I am close to packing it in.

I know your not blaming Wes. But the problems are way above a captain.

The buck stops with Top.

He either needs to change or sell up. You can't be buddies with players the manager is the link.

We are a basket case and need change.

True. But it had been built off the work of those brought in by Vichai, Puel and Macia.

Aiyawatt’s first decision was to sack Puel and bring in Rodgers. Although I was one of the first to want Rodgers out, I don’t necessarily think the appointment itself was the problem as much as the power handed over to him and keeping him about 18 months too long.

The point though, despite an uplift on the pitch, which the squad building had been leading towards anyway, the off field health of the club has been in decline from very early in his reign after taking over from Vichai.

The title win has really clouded a lot of people’s memories. The year before that we finished 14th and the year before that we were in the championship (for many years)

We’ve had a great 10 years or so. We just need to get rid of the high earning average players (a lot of them are gone end of the season) and rebuild again.

This season is a write off, it’s not the end of the world if we don’t go up. Leeds didn’t go up first year, nor did Aston Villa when they got relegated a while back.

We’ve lost three HUGE leaders. Wes, Kasper and now Vardy. It’s taking its toll.

Yes we've lost leaders and all teams need them. But you can't run to the owner and undermine the manager.

The manager comes in with a plan he's sold the owner. If that's agreed then the owner should back the manager while he's putting his plan in place. Ruud wanted Winks to stay at the training ground the night before a game. Top should have backed him. If Winks didn't do it then fine him. Personally we are paying players a shit load and they should move within an hour of the ground end of.

Can’t agree. This is not about winning the PL again. You can’t surely think that?

And it is far from as simple as just getting rid of the high earners. Do you seriously think we are suddenly going to start making sensible decisions with manager and player recruitment with Aiyawatt and Rudkin? Literally in the past few weeks, Luke Thomas was given an extra 3 years with a wage rise!

We are essentially back to circa 2004 but worse as we have PSR hanging over us constantly due to poor decisions that show no sign of letting up (see Thomas example).

We will not be going up this season or next. It is almost a certainty that we will see League 1 again before we see the PL as well.

The decline started when Brendan held us to ransome for a new contract, had too much power and destroyed the morale of the squad in an attempt of self-preservation.

He has literally done the same thing at Celtic and they had the foresight to pull the trigger early.

That coupled with the loss of Vichai and as time passed his methods being forgotten or changed. Teflon Jon wielding too much power and Aiyawatt being a shadow of his Father.

Leaders going and not being replaced was a huge concern. The symbolism of them being instantly forgotten really grates me, Wes retired his shirt number given to Ryan Betrand a free agency mercenary. Kaspers number 1 jersey being handed to Danny Ward, who was beyond useless. We have just done the same with Vardy. It boils my p**s that Ayew swans around in his number 9 jersey. Another mercenary.

Things like that clearly mean nothing to the people managing the club, but they should. Because it means something to the fans. If there was no one suitable to take the number 9 jersey, save it for when someone has earned it or a marquee signing comes in.

It’s always negative whatever happens. When we finished 5th in the best league in the world 2 years in a row it was considered a failure by many fans.

Did he negotiate the contracts?

Indeed

He got Aiyawatt in a head lock and made him give out OTT wages and threatened him that the club must lose 70M per season for the past 5 seasons

Remember !! It’s always someone else’s fault like it was PSR’s fault

It’s the owner, not Wes, not Ronald McDonald or the man in the moon

Aiyawatt it’s you !!!!!!!!!

Kasper was a bigger loss.

This is accurate.

Particularly when Rodgers denied him Xhundred appearances in a row.

A blow to the culture.
