The wedding at Cana by Paolo Veronese

I'm the least religious person going but I find religious art awe inspiring. Same with battlefield paintings. I think it's the extravagance which I'm drawn to

This one really had an impact on me. Never mind the Velaquez or Goya classics, this one makes the Prado museum in Madrid a must-visit.

Echo the sentiment about the Prado.

I spent hours and hours there, my feet were hurting afterwards.  lol  Totally worth it, though.

There's a painting of a saxophonist hanging in one of the corridors in Glenfield Hospital. I've often stopped to admire it.

Perhaps not technically brilliant but something about it really holds my attention.

Cannot find online so unable to link here unfortunately.

I work there so I'll try and snap a pic of it next week if I remember. lol

I used to work in Covent Garden and I was a Friend of the Courtauld Gallery in Somerset House. Lots of amazing art, but Manet’s A Bar at the Folies Bergères always got to me.

Love that gallery and that painting. The bass bottle in the corner!

Very Turner-esque.  I recall as a child being transfixed by 'Fishermen at Sea' at the Tate.

Also, from a young age I also loved the detail and colour of the Pre-Raphaelites. Holman Hunt in particular.

Excellent thread this.

Violin on the door painting in Chatsworth House.   Looks so real, you're convinced it's actually a violin hanging on the door.

Probably an unusual one for many, but I really like The Great Wave Off Tanagawa by Hokusai.

image.jpeg.c322f34022a0e20e1112accc2bfc9d39.jpeg

Went to the British Museum earlier in the year and this was there in an exhibition that cost an extra £16 to get into.

I don't like it that much (besides there was so much to see for free).

See my post on the first page about Ukiyo-e.

Hokusai is only the tip of the iceberg.

A Battery Shelled by Percy Wyndham Lewis painted in 1919.

Only 2 years before he painted this he had been fighting at Passchendael after which he became an official war artist from the British and Canadians.

Glad this thread has popped up. Does anyone know of any Leicestershire based artists that have created any interesting pieces based on the city?

I went round a friends house the other week and he is from Glasgow and had a few amazing pieces local to them and I’d love to see what we have. I’ve searched online but struggled to find much more than Etsy style prints which isn’t really what I was going for.

Check out Rigby Graham. He and the Gadsby gallery produced a book on Leicestershire in 1978 or around then which features over 150 paintings of Leicester and Leicestershire.  He painted it as he saw it, no airs and graces and no brushing out anything unsightly. The book is quite hard to get now and costs around £500 plus but if you get to the library they probably have a copy to look at. It is well worth it.  He's not for everyone but I think he was a genius. Taught in Leicester for many years and produced some big murals for the hospital now taken down and lost unfortunately.

As well as his paintings he was a brilliant print maker and collaborated on many local small press publications with a guy called Toni Savage and others.
