Yet I clearly and absolutely remember many fans and many on this board continually slagging Madders and Youri off. Barnes was often groaned at in the ground.

And full disclosure and for balance,  I admit to being fed up with KDH at that time, who I thought was second rate.

These comments kill me. Expectations change.

We had a manager on £8m a year and the 7th highest wage bill in the league. Tielemans & (particularly) Maddison were regularly infuriating versus the perception that a lot of fans had of them.

Wonder if Cov will go for Maddison when they go up

That would be horrible. Shame hes had his career ruined by injury, hes a quality player on his day.

Only thing I could see stopping him going there would be wages. He'll be on a huge wedge at Spurs and prob still has 2 years left on his deal. Possibly a loan with them paying 50% of his wages.

Both people in the pic are also in relegation battles this season also. Must be sympathetic to our cause 🤣

We are a warning to any club that thinks that they are in a good position - one year changes everything.

For my sins, I’ve had a look at the business other premier league clubs did in the 22/23 season. I’ve discounted the clubs we couldn’t have competed with financially but even then this is depressing.

GK - we sold Kasper and didn’t bring a replacement in. Fulham signed Leno for £3m and Sam Johnstone went to Palace on a free. Dubravka and Butland also went out on loan - all better than what we stuck with.

LB - we panic bought Kristensen in the January. Estupinan went for £12m, Leif Davis (£1m 😩) and in January Spence got loaned out to France.

CB - now this is depressing. We lost Wes and signed Faes and Souttar (Jan) in replacement. That year Bournemouth signed Senesi for £12m, Tarkowski went on a free and Colwill & Branthwaite went out on loan. Even Craig Dawson for £3m was better than what we did!

AM - we needed attacking reinforcements and signed Tete on loan with a failed £20m move for Jack F’ing Harrison on deadline day. Utd loaned out Amad that year (did amazing at Sunderland) and in the Jan Bournemouth spent £8m on Semenyo and Brentford and Wolves loaned Schade and Cunha respectively.

I appreciate all of this is purely hypothetical. But it demonstrates how poorly we planned for that season. None of these players I’ve mentioned would have been out of reach if we had realised the situation we were in. That year has sent us back a decade (at least) and should be a stark warning to those clubs who find themselves now where we were 4 or 5 years ago.

A lot can be said about Rodgers seemingly being allowed to throw our transfer strategy out the window. He was clearly given too much power and it seems we completely changed the way we did our business when he arrived. Our transfer strategy hasn't improved since he left either to be fair, and it does make you wonder how much influence managers have had on signings. Skipp and Ayew were completely against what we would have previously signed and seems like the kind of signings Cooper would have chosen.

Brentford and Brighton and us years ago proved that with the right scouting network and recruitment strategy, you can be successful in the transfer market, even with PSR rules. We need to scrap everything we do currently and completely overhaul our recruitment team if we are to have any chance of rebuilding the club.

Take Lookman out, they are the same players who got us relegated.

I think that's kind of the point. The "how??"
