He was seriously threatened about comments about his style rather than willing to articulately defend it. Instead he uses the word 'energy' a thousand times over, loosely blames our younger players, and points towards his past record (which I wouldn't, too much, if I were him) as cause for optimism. Of course, a win tomorrow and loads will forget their pessimism. But in the medium term, and even more so in the long term, the early signs aren't good at all. Still, I've been proven wrong many a time. Let's hope it happens again. 3

You can't play like Barcelona without the budget to buy the players to play the system effectively. The club's obsession with possession football has partly led to it's demise. They should be obsessed with winning instead, that should should be in the club's DNA. Getting smashed at home 4-0 after having failed to score in 2 out of the previous 4 league matches already while enjoying almost 70% possession on average which is way higher than any other club is going to attract criticism but still, he gets a lovely pay off for failure 1

I honestly don't get it, and never have, when people say he's a good talker. He comes across as self-indulgent, unsophisticated, self-pitying and easily flustered. I've never seen anything to suggest he's management material in any field. I'm amazed anyone has ever been kidded by him. When people spoke highly of his Lineker interview I watched it with an open mind and was utterly unimpressed. I pin all my hopes on there being something, unidentifiable to me, which makes him a competent manager, though his past record suggests there isn't. Like I've said before, though, I have been wrong in the past. I want him to do well too, of course. What sort of fan would I be otherwise? And I think we haven't quite seen enough to say that it's worth uprooting all of our pre-season team-building, only five league games in, in order to be rid of him. There's a degree here of having made our bed, and so on. But after those early results, and the last game - regardless of my feelings that instant returns are unlikely for a manager at this club - you have to say that his time could be short. After all, we're trying to sell the club as a sleeping giant, rather than as a substandard third tier side with mounting debts. That's going to be impossible if we don't pick it up very, very quickly. 2

Everybody has adapted. Even Barcelona play much more direct, and have invested in players that suit a fast pressing style. Nobody does 'possession for possession's sake' because everybody knows it can be easily countered -- any decent team within each division knows all the standard patterns of positional play. They know how to press teams like ours in our own half and force mistakes. What we are seeing in Russell Martin is a new kind of footballing dinosaur. Unwilling to adapt, with his mind and ideas stuck in the early 2010s. As we are seeing, two huge obvious issues are created when he tries to play this way. We're slow to build up, so our shots come off in less dangerous areas against a more organised defence. But critically, we get caught in possession trying to pass it around at the back. No amount of 'extra training or preseason' (as is his usual excuse) fixes this, these are structural issues and it's sad to see. When you lose 4-0 at home like we did, it's not purely down to individual errors, it's tactical. Ironically, our success as a club was built on being one of the first teams to realise that we don't all have to play 'possession football' to WIN, and it collapsed the season after when Claudio tried to make us play more in that way. 8

The truth is in any other walk of life if you were this wedded to a way of operating and it continued to deliver terrible results you would be out the door and not touched by any other business in the industry as you are too rigid and lack the ability to try new and innovative ways to improve performance. 4

Why persist with his defenders and the goalkeeper passing the ball between them like it’s an unexplored bomb literally 5 yards from our goal, it has led to numerous chances for the opposition and yet we persist even though the players are so uncomfortable and incapable of doing it.
