A statistic generally involves a quantitative measure. It's something you can exactly measure and produce stats for.

Explain to me how the quality of an opportunity is quantitative.... It isn't.. It's hugely objective, and basically utter nonsense.

I hate xG. Its not like you get an extra point for a higher xG than your opponents. Werent Sunderland above x4 at Man City last weekend. Only stat that matters is the full time score.

I presume you mean subjective rather than objective,  as you wouldn’t say it’s free from bias then say it’s utter nonsense?

 

Any quality can be quantified if you have enough data for example, distance, angle, type of assist, body part used, and speed of attack.

A computer algorithm looks at a database of hundreds of thousands of historical shots (nearly a million in Opta”s case) weighing these precise physical and situational variables to calculate the statistical probability of those shots hitting the back of the net.

 

xG measures spatial geometry, defensive pressure, and empirical probability. It turns physical space and match context into a hard number, making it a perfectly valid, highly rigorous quantitative statistic.

 

The mathematical foundation of xG is fundamentally the same as the predictive models used by insurance companies to calculate mortality rates or meteorologists calculating a "60% chance of rain."

 

If xG is nonsense, then the entire multi trillion pound global insurance, banking risk, and weather forecasting infrastructure would also have to be classified as nonsense.

xG is misused as an expected score statistic which it wasn't designed for. TV coverage using this as an indicator for team performance is very stupid.

 

It is supposed to be a more reliable way of assessing creative players than assists by recording the chance created rather than If they result in a goal. If you put in a really good through ball for jamie vardy that is likely to get recorded as an assist. If you put the exact same through ball to Bobby de cordova Reid the shot will likely hit the goalkeeper. Assists are only going to record the first one which isn't the player creating the chances fault.

 

The ball played in and the chance created are the same but assists dont record those chances accurately. This helps identify players who are.making stuff happen but play in teams that dont have goalscorers to convert them.

On one hand, I actually like him more than I thought I would and find his football less ponderous and monotonous than I expected. He talks well and I imagine has actually improved the atmosphere at Seagrave. Dare I say it, his football can be more entertaining than Enzo’s and when it works is good to watch. He’s also shaped a good squad (albeit too big!) and has integrated the youth which we all wanted.

 

The big downside is how frail we look at the back. It’s far too easy to create a chance against us by intercepting a pass across the back or nicking possession off a midfielder/defender. My fear is his approach to dealing with this will be to double down on coaching how to get better at it as opposed to fixing this obvious flaw in his tactics. A lot of his plan is based on this high risk approach so playing a different way at the back just won’t work.

 

So we’re stuck in a bit of an awkward stand off really. Does feel like with the squad we have a manager with a more pragmatic attacking approach would have more points through simply having better players than the opposition. But let’s see, I don’t hate him so far, but we seriously need to start turning nice patterns of play and possession into points.

Take your pick for a number, but if you’re looking at things objectively I don’t think you can begrudge Martin another stint of 10 games or so before coming to a considered opinion.

 

Obviously if we go on a run of 5 straight defeats immediately after the international break he won’t get 10 - but there’s 3 home league games (Peterborough, Doncaster and Wigan) and Bromley away inside those first 5 (Luton away is the other one), so you’d hope there’s a significant points haul coming.

In 7 matches of league one second half football, the Brentmeister has failed to win one second half. 
I think this highlights his limitations, he sets his teams/clubs up the same way and if it’s not working can’t be dynamic enough to adapt.

This follows the same pattern as his promoted Southampton team, that were top of the table for first half performances and 8th for second half.

It’s just obviously considerably worse as it’s a step down in competition and we’re 5th and  bottom of the second half performances.

It’s funny how views can differ, I actually think entirely the opposite….

 

I do think we’re slow and laborious, that our risk taking is more the team rushing passing phases in dangerous areas, leading to a loss of possession and easy turnovers, than it’s calculated moves. 
 

The occasional nice passages of play are instinctive over coaching for me, because they’re not happening frequently enough, otherwise it is all very slow paced…. 
 

I also don’t think it’s been particularly good either, under pressure we’re a mess, misplaced passes, susceptible to counter attacks and defensively fragile which is costing us points, the way Martin sets us up leaves us wide open to conceding goals. 
 

I also don’t think he speaks well, he is either on the defensive, or speaking in riddles….. when you listen to Enzo speak, he explains what he is trying to achieve, and why he has made a certain decision, I don’t get that form Martin, I just hear excuses, strange analogies and words and phrases like energy, we will learn from that, we will be better for it, and there’s a good feeling about the group. 
 

I don’t hear anything at all from him that suggests he actually knows what he is doing. The fact that no other fan group speaks highly of him, is a red flag. 
 

For me, the decision is simple, he we want to promote, this season, he has to go, he simply hasn’t got what it takes to get this side up.
