Too often, he received the ball from Harry Souttar or Oliver Skipp, looked up to assess his options before deciding against playing the forward pass through the lines.

Understandable really when the options are Mavididi or BDR

Also Martin didn’t say he was frustrated by Thomas that was Josh Holland’s personal opinion, Josh Holland also thought yesterdays game was a pre season game as well

However, Khun Top was back in the Midlands for the final pre-season game and took his seat in the directors box alongside Jon Rudkin and James McCarron. He greeted supporters in the West Stand before the game and post-victory, visited the club shop and took photos with those that asked.

Thomas awful?😂 I missed the first half but don’t remember him doing any thing particularly bad in the second half.

yes he was, it was the standard fare from thomas, pretty sure he fell over his own legs in the second half

I think Stolarcyzk had a bad year yesterday not because of Stowell who left a while ago but because of Marti Cifuentes ‘coaching team’

Stowell was his goalkeeping coach in his formative period and for me is quite clearly a very poor goalkeeping coach.

We've not had one decent keeper come through from his time and we were fortunate to have Kasper who had huge amounts of natural ability.

Stolarcyzk was very good yesterday and to me looked far better in his actual technique in terms of taking crosses, communication, position and fundamentals of anticipating and getting behind shots.

He was, a supported reported here RM’s frustration at Thomas and Holland says “…visibly frustrated Martin, who was seen turning to his bench and calling for more aggression.”

I think that Leicester, even at its lowest ebb being a much bigger draw than Stockport might well have tempted him.  You asked me to name one so I did, but if not him then there are literally 100 options I'd take before Russell f***ing Martin. The rest of the football world is laughing at us.

After he fails here, I believe this will be his last chance in league football.  He'll end up at Dagenham or somewhere, ike Peter Taylor.

Spot on, I also thought he has very much improved as a Goalkeeper in the modern game. We always knew he was an excellent shot stopper.

We have to thank Russell and his Coaches for that. I just hope he's not head hunted before the seasons over at least.

Russell says all the right things but watching his teams play in the past, they've all been slow on the ball and took an age to get it forward, exactly how we played yesterday. So I dont think he'd be too disappointed, we need a striker, but pretty much the slow/safety first style is something we'll see all season.

A couple of positives :

- Watson looked very bright when we came on and it was good to see a winger running at their full back!

- Joseph had another solid game at RB- hard to believe he’s only 19!

It wasn’t great but we’re through

He’s 20

The problem with this forum, is that there are quite a few people who moan about everything and contribute no actual talking points, just regurgitate the same few hate comments about certain players etc.

Depends what you consider a large number of people, because it’s usually about 10-15 of the same people copy and pasting the same shite in every forum and backing each other up.

How recent are we talking? Because I will hold my hands up and agree that Cooper, Ruud, Marti and Rowett were the wrong appointments. But if you cast your mind back to our championship winning season under maresca, which I would say was largely a pretty successful season, you may disagree? There was still the same bunch of people moaning week in and week out about “excitement” and “style of play” and “tippy tappy bs”.

And there are also the same people who pile on anyone who dares offer any critique other than everything is fine. It works both ways.

You suggested that to offer an opinion on things, you have to be an expert in the field and have all the answers. I assume you never have an opinion about anything? No opinion on politics for example? And if so, do you have your degree in Political Science from a prestigious University to entitle you to an option?

My point is, I didn’t see the game so I looked through this thread to gauge the views. Some are obviously set on it proving them right about Martin, others saying it is early days and we need to see how things go. But the consensus was that it wasn’t great in its own right which is an absolutely fine view because it was probably true! The one thing that bored me reading the thread was your moaning and whining at people the views, not the views themselves!

You don’t think a large number of people in our fan base think there are issues with the on field performances in recent times? As that is what I was saying.

We have had 3 relegations in 4 seasons. What more evident do you need slapping in the face with to suggest the on field performances have been poor FFS!🤦‍♂️

Maresca obviously got the results and the desired outcome of promotion. Does that mean everyone has to follow the same view and enjoy the style? Maybe football in your mind is just a result and you just look at the score each week and see a win (in the case of the Maresca season) and that is fine for you. Others go to games and have an interest in the entertainment side and if people want to see more energy, pressing and pace to a game than walking football, with respect, who are you to judge that opinion as wrong?

Not an 8 that chases up and down, I don't believe he's strong enough for that yet. But one that sits in that hole behind the Striker and Winger providing ammunition for others.

Biggest concern for me isn’t with the new signings or academy players in playing the way RM wants us to play but it’s the more experienced players still lingering from

last season and beyond who worry me.

Souttar, Okoli, Skipp, Thomas are all way to uncomfortable, slow and cumbersome in possession to be able move the ball with pace and purpose, Mavididi is just so poor now, looks disinterested and seems incapable of beating his man. Bobby Reid offers nothing and Choudhury managed to show in his little cameo his amazing ability to switch off and lose his man in key areas and then just jog back without a care in the world.

These are all players actively scouted and recruited or academy developed and offered long term lucrative contract extensions when it is clear to see they don’t have the required skill set to play the style we have adopted for the past 8 years or so.

If we want to play this progressive style pf

play and play it a high tempo you simply

cannot afford to have this many technically deficient players in your starting XI.

Players are making the correct movements and creating space and opportunities but as soon as any of these are involved it naturally slows down, or the pass is misplaced or momentum is lost as they have to take an extra touch and then pass it sideways or backwards and start again.

This happened so many times yesterday and will continue to do so. Hopefully changes can and will be made so the majority or all of them are not involved come next weekend.

Thank you for explaining this, this is why I have been hostile to the choice of manager and the style of play, we not putting the pieces in place in the squad for it.  We also probably cant afford to either at the moment.

Hopefully it at least works out ok this season, but I cant see this going on over multiple seasons.

Russell Martin claimed "we dominated" through possession but failed to mention that Northampton willingly allowed Leicester to have the ball and virtually controlled most of the game because of it. Ball possession and game control are different things.

Not sure I’d say Northampton were comfortably controlling the second half.  Yes they allowed us to have the ball in the first half but I felt we were  better second in pushing them back.  Maybe they decided we had nothing up top to worry them so they could allow us onto them higher up the field  and give themselves more space to break into on turnover.

Don't entirely disagree but for all that ball possession we only had three shots on target. Could argue that Northampton kept the ball out of the danger areas for very long periods.

ok here is an ai analysis of yesterday game and for me highlights the problem with Martin style of play, you actually get the feeling its telling you had the northampton manager being our manager for the game his tactics would got us a better result lol

Tactical Analysis: Manager's Approach and Failures

The stats reveal a manager fixated on possession control without a coherent attacking strategy. The 77% possession suggests an ideological commitment to dominating the ball—likely a "control the game" philosophy. But the numbers expose its hollowness.

The key failure: over-reliance on sideways possession. With 162 backward passes vs only 187 forward passes, Leicester recycled the ball excessively rather than progressing it. A manager committed to attacking would demand more direct play, but these figures show a cautious, methodical approach that allowed Northampton to organize their defence.

Lack of penetration in the final third is the damning indictment. 108 successful final third passes yielded only 3 shots on target—this is architectural failure. The manager's system created position but not danger. A well-coached attacking unit should generate clearer chances from such dominance.

Playing into Northampton's hands is the strategic miscalculation. By allowing the opposition time and space to organize defensively through slow, methodical build-up play, Leicester negated their own advantage. Northampton thrived on this—they pressed high when necessary, then sat deep knowing Leicester lacked the directness to unlock them quickly.

The verdict: The manager prioritized controlling the game over winning it—a philosophical error at this level. Possession without incisiveness is passive football. A more aggressive, direct approach would have exploited Leicester's numerical superiority far more effectively.

Have I not just said in my post that you replied to that cooper, ruud, marti and rowett were bad appointments?

The fact is we have played 1 competitive game under Martin and a lot of you have already thrown your toys out the pram. Grow up.

Edit to add, no I don’t have an opinion on politics. Other than that far left and far right are both a load of mongrels.

Where have I said I have given up on Martin? I have literally said in my first reply to you he needs some time as he has one hand tied behind his back. You’re just spinning out now.

Point is, moaning about people moaning is just as boring to read as anything else. It’s a forum, people have opinions and it’s a place to discuss thoughts but also for people to vent.

If you read my post, it says “a lot of you” I didn’t direct it straight at you. You are the one who replied to my posts.

I personally think it’s more interesting to read people who have actual opinions rather than 12 pages of “Luke Thomas get out my club” “BDCR can’t kick a ball” “RM pass to death” etc etc etc

Yeah ok, wasn’t aimed at me, even the grow up part?

I agree it is good to see a range of opinions. But seeing people digging others out and moaning that they are criticising is equally boring (or more so). That was my point.

You cant change that many people have a set idea when it comes to Martin. But given where we are, I will say it again, this forum has been pretty damn positive this summer considering. Like what do you serious expect after 3 relegations in 4 years and at our lowest point? People aren’t going to be off each post with ‘all hail Khun Top’ are they?

But as always, it works both ways. You are unhappy people have essentially a mind made up. Ok, that’s fair, I agree. What about those who won’t hear a word against how the club is being run and attack anyone who does? That is equally a case of being set in a view point and refusing to change that view, regardless of the level of evidence served up. I think actually, the critics are more open minded in that when things show more positive signs, things acknowledged.

Seen on Facebook the supporters club ask someone to name their MOTM, this is who they chose.

*** MAN OF THE MATCH *** Once again this season we will be asking one of our members after each game to vote for a MAN OF THE MATCH. Win, loose or draw we will always have a MOTM! This week our member has chosen Harry Souttar!

Don't know what game they were watching, but it wasn't the same one as me.
