Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think Riis's two goals at the weekend is the first time a Leicester player has scored a brace in the league since Vardy away at Preston, to clinch the Championship title. Nearly 2 1/2 years.

Eh. Swings and roundabouts isn't it. Sometimes you get an assist for tapping it two yards to someone who hammers one top bins from 30 yards out. Sometimes you run the length of the pitch, skin half the opposition team, lay it off to a team to get a tap in and it doesn't count back it bounces off a defender's toe on the way. 

 

Generally all balances out. Everyone watching knows Page made the goal.

Did some digging on this at the weekend and was amazed to be reminded Daka did it towards the end of last season lollol

That's correct. 2 for Page, 1 for Alves.

 

Page is awarded assists for Cullen's first (great pass btw) and Lundstram's goal. To be fair, two assists in a match is still a fantastic return.


He doesn't get an assist for Riis' first and, to be fair, not only does it take a significant deflection which technically discounts the assist but the deflection, not the pass, is why we score. It completely changes the nature of the ball through to Riis. And given we probably wouldn't have scored without the deflection he wasn't getting an assist either way.

 

The way Page struck it, he's trying to feed in Riis to feet the same way he fed in Cullen, so Riis would have needed to either turn on the ball or let it roll across him and then rely on his pace to get in behind. He's then got to beat an onrushing goalkeeper with the ball on the deck which is harder than it sounds. Outside the absolute elite level, only something like 40-50% of one-on-ones get converted, hence why those chances are typically only about a 0.4 to 0.5xG. But it never would have happened anyway because the pass just isn't really on. It's being closed down by the immediate defender and it's being covered by a second who is watching it all the way, primed to intercept it:

But like the Alves goal against Plymouth I guess, if you don't buy a ticket, you don't win the lottery. Fortunately for us the immediate defender can't block it entirely and it balloons up over the second one leaving him stranded and bypassing him:

Not only does it put Riis uncontested in to space because both CBs have been beaten, he's got a bouncing ball that comes up at the most perfect height imaginable for him to flick it over the keeper (who drops way too low not anticipating the chip) without really breaking his stride. Couldn't have really asked for a better deflection all round, tbh.

 

None of it happens without Page but the best thing Page does is actually pick the ball up halfway inside his own half, receive it on the turn which immediately beats the press, then runs extremely directly through the middle of the park progressing the ball at speed before attempting the pass to Riis. It's his progression that really makes it. It's something Kante used to be very good at, everyone remembers his defending but his carrying the ball through the middle of the park to set up fast attacks on the transition was amazing. Page really has that about him.

 

Which leads me nicely on to Alves. Yes, technically Alves got an assist for casually laying it off two yards to Riis in space miles from goal and then Riis smashing in a worldy in the bottom corner out of nowhere. But that's oversimplifying what happened before that.

 

Alves receives the ball from Page inside his own half, isolated out on the touchline, with nothing on at all. Page is stood inside a triangle of Stockport defenders, two of which (15 & 4) are pushing up on Alves. Page is the only midfielder available to Alves but he's surrounded, Lundstram is out of shot here in the 10 position behind 3 defenders, Riis is up the pitch hugging the same touchline and I don't actually know where Braybrooke is at that point. The middle of the park is all Stockport.

99% of our players in the post-Ranieri/Shakespeare era of LCFC control football would have played it safely back to Thomas from there, who'd have played it back to the keeper, who'd have held it, invited Stockport on and we'd have just gone back to retaining possession not going anywhere. It's the obvious, safe thing to do.

 

Sure enough, 15 and 4 do go to close Alves down and Alves, knowing that they're coming and that he's expected to just lay it back, dummies to play it back inside but then turns quickly back outside, completely bamboozling both defenders and creating huge space behind them:

4 and 15 are gone, 10 absolutely saunters back like defending isn't his job (he later absolutely could and should have gone and shut down Riis as well, I'd be ****ing livid if I was a Stockport fan) and Alves carries the ball from a nothing position on the touchline in our own half to teeing up Riis 20 yards out from their goal. Yeah, the pass is a nothing tap two yards but he completely made the whole situation out of nothing and we'd have just been passing it round the back four trying to bait Stockport out without him.

 

Absolutely, definitely worth an assist that.

 

Two outstanding bits of ball progression from two of our own academy products. Really nice to see.
