teblin Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 I think we have the makings of being a very good side! If the board get the right man to take charge (maybe they already have) we could have a good season next year! But what do yo guys think we need in terms of players to maybe make a push for the top six? I feel we need a left back, maybe another centre back, midfielder and possibly a stiker as cover for hume and fryatt.
Ric Flair Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 Although I rate alot of our players and i'm optimistic that this club is going in the right direction I can't actually picture us being anywhere near the top of the league for a few seasons. That shouldn't be the case but I just can't see it myself. We do only need 4 or 5 new players to continue our progression though.
Manwell Pablo Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 Whether it be through our own players upping their game or new signing the main areas of concern are right wing, left back, Left wing if Welsh/Smith are going, and Centre mid.

I think we have probably 6 or 7 players that are ready for a top six push next year, the rest are way below the required standard, the trouble is if the rest of them were just average it would be enough.
Foxing_Around Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 I certainly think we have the basis of a good team, but we are definitely missing a few pieces of the jigsaw. One thing that does concern me, is set pieces, both defending and attacking we are poor and this is something that definitely needs addressing.
Bert Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 If we had finished respectably this season then i would've said yes, let's push for promotion but i think we need another season with the same squad with them all playing regularly in the same position with changes only when neccessary, if we go up next season it will be amazing but i'm quite sad to say that we would probably come straight back down. Stranger things have happened.
willy37 Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 stupid answer i know but i believe, and im pretty sure the players believe we have potentially one of the best squads in the league we just need to remember how to win games week in week out
Dr The Singh Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 Alot of luck. The teams that get prmoted usually have 'run of the green' and either score alot of goals or don't concide many!! We need a general improvement in our squad but we need a couple of players that can add that little extra ie capable of creating chances, making a killer pass and open the defence. Those players don't come cheap!!!
Jimmy Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 a new keeper, left back (or a massivly improved sheehan), 2 wingers, an attacking cm and a striker to add to hume fryatt and o'grady
Phube Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 We need to put round pegs in round holes!!!! This was why the first half (and most of the second) against Hull was so dire: CB playing LB CM playing LW RB playing RW CB playing RB (I know he's good there but as I've said before he's supposed to be a central defender!!) Until we have (decent) players playing in there proper positions, even though his results have been good, R Kelly keep on, like CL to put players out of position!!!!
eaststandtom Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 avoid relegation this season!!! first things first hey?
ithuriel Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 oops , already posted on another thread. id go for a few decent signings rather than filling the team out with dross. a new goalkeeper if possible , a commanding centerhalf and a quality midfield player if possible. keep nissa at leftback and hopefully see players like sheehan , gradel , porter , o'grady and chambers come through more into the team next season. not heard anything about dodds or smedley being offered new contracts so im wondering how they are doing?

Ric Flair Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 dodds has signed a new deal not heard about smedley Smedley has been practically injured for the past 2 seasons so I think the club will access whether he's going to be anygood for us this summer. He's played about half a dozen games for the under 18's and reserve team in the past month or so.
martyn Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 We're miles off being a promotion chasing side. I think the midfield is the urgent area, what with uncertainty regarding how Weso will be on his return, along with the continued poor form of Hughes/Williams. I'm optimistic if Hughes gets a full pre season then he can turn in consistently good performances though. A right sided midfielder should also be priority. We also need another striker, 2 full backs and a Goalkeeper who can slot in as number 1. trouble is these things cost money which we don't have.

Why the need for 2 full backs though? Right back is sorted, Sheehan is a good back-up for left back. I think we need a left winger, a right winger, an attacking central midfielder and a new striker if we can offload Hammond.
The Don Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 We need lots of luck..... We also need the Birch, smoking areas, the kop moving and paper aeroplanes.
Durnerz Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 We have the basis of a good side, its just getting that understanding and consistancy. Reading are top and cruising with people like Chris Makin in the side! When we went up last time we had pretty average to shite players like Rogers and Summerbee. The main point I think thats cost us this season has been the Goalkeeper, Douglas has been less than convincing and Henderson when he has played hasnt commanded his area as well as i'd like to see. That would cut out a lot of the goals, Set pieces we are looking better on with regard to defending them, zonal marking was responsible for a lot of goals being conceded and without Mccarthy in the side we had no organiser over the past 2 games when defending set plays. Another influencial player has to come in I feel, there was talk of Graham Kavanagh and I think that would be a decent choice. Wesolowski has shown signs of being a midfield general but alongside a guy like Kavanagh there would be a mentor for him. This is a poor division where the amount of players who could play at a higher level are few and far between, hence Watfords rise to the top 6.
Babylon Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 We also need the Birch, smoking areas, the kop moving and paper aeroplanes. I'd move the kop.... the others we can do without
potter3 Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 We need Julio Arca to stay at Sunderland, so then Welsh should stay here to get first team football. We need two decent centre mids, because Wesolowsk may be injury prine, and Williams and Hughes arent reliable enough. We need a right winger, maybe Porter or someone from the academy. A left back and a goalkeeper are not as urgent, but would be good if we get someone like Walker on loan? Also a backup striker.
ramp Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 for starters we need a new goalkeeper! douglas is too old and not agile enough and henderson makes too many mistakes, and is not experienced enough.
shez Posted 9 March 2006 Posted 9 March 2006 need a keeper, right midfield, left midfield, centre mid and a new subs bench
