Ultra Posted 8 June 2006 Posted 8 June 2006 From the BBC site Fifa wants 18-team Premier League Fifa is heading for a showdown with the Premier League over its 20-club size. On Thursday Fifa's Congress endorsed a proposal for Europe's top leagues to be reduced to a maximum of 18 clubs by the start of the 2007-08 season. Fifa president Sepp Blatter said: "We've been given the power to work on it. We'll do it. It'll give four more days to the international calendar." But Premier League spokesman Dan Johnson ruled out a reduction: "There's no appetite for this kind of change." Johnson added: "The only people who are going to tell us how to run the Premier League are the league's 20 member clubs' chairmen. "They are the only ones who can change the composition of the league and they are just not going to go for this - no way." Fifa's decision could also hit the Spanish, Italian, and French leagues. The leagues affected should tell FIFA where to get off on this. .
dandannieldanok Posted 8 June 2006 Posted 8 June 2006 It seems pointless to make these changes that could affect many clubs in a chain reaction down the footbal league ladder to reduce the league size by 2, ridiculous.
Guest Gist Posted 8 June 2006 Posted 8 June 2006 This shouldn't happen this reduces all the chances of the teams below getting promoted.
MC Prussian Posted 8 June 2006 Posted 8 June 2006 I've never been a huge fan of Blatter, that man is more or less a total control freak and a disgrace for the promotion of football. There's something very shady about the way the FIFA is run, not just because of the selection process in regards to the WC 2004 (which went to Germany under dubious circumstances). Some say you can buy votes in the FIFA and when you look at that prestigious club of old men, they're all pretty well off in terms of money. Also look at how they dealt with the happenings in Graz, Austria (Red Bull bought the local football team and is now doint "Entertainment football") and Manchester (FC United), where they let the money rule. Reducing the Premiership to 18 teams? Gimme a break. That system has always worked and has been very exciting so far (playoff games in the Championship). I'd like to know what the real intentions are behind this new proposition.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 8 June 2006 Posted 8 June 2006 Fixture pile-ups, European games, far too many, domestic leagues fine before, suddenly a problem, control freak etc etc Can't even be bothered to construct a proper paragraph about that tool Blatter.
Chairman of the Bored Posted 8 June 2006 Posted 8 June 2006 The Premier League have already said "computer says no."
Nationwider Posted 8 June 2006 Posted 8 June 2006 VVankers. I can't be bothered to put anything else. They should be making it a 22-team Prem and losing the Champions League group nonsense.
Master Fox Posted 9 June 2006 Posted 9 June 2006 Sepp Blatter is the biggest c0ck in football. He really has no fooking idea what he's doing!
Steven Posted 9 June 2006 Posted 9 June 2006 You have to understand that FIFA are trying to gain control of the Club game.
davieG Posted 9 June 2006 Posted 9 June 2006 VVankers. I can't be bothered to put anything else. They should be making it a 22-team Prem and losing the Champions League group nonsense. BIG DITTO
shen Posted 9 June 2006 Posted 9 June 2006 VVankers. I can't be bothered to put anything else. They should be making it a 22-team Prem and losing the Champions League group nonsense. Hear hear! It is called the 'Champions' League, not the 'Champions & second, third and fourth' League...
City Fan Posted 9 June 2006 Posted 9 June 2006 They should keep it as 20 teams, but there are other ways to reduce the number of games. They should get rid of the pointless Carling Cup, and they should make the Champions League a lot smaller, i.e. only having the champions of all the leagues instead of 4th placed teams etc. Then they could have a small knockout tournament to see who are the champions of Europe.
Janx Posted 9 June 2006 Posted 9 June 2006 corrupt tw@ ... the lot o them...tooo much power.... sammaranch was the same and havelange and all the other people in high level roles is sport...allegedly

Stevosevic Posted 9 June 2006 Posted 9 June 2006 Heard about this a few years ago. Sepp Blatter what a t**t, looks like it is finally going to happen.
Daggers Posted 9 June 2006 Posted 9 June 2006 Heard about this a few years ago. Sepp Blatter what a t**t, looks like it is finally going to happen. S'not. They have no juristiction over the make-up of national leagues. I reckon we should reduce the Premiership down to 5 teams ... then refuse to have anything to do with them anymore.
Babylon Posted 9 June 2006 Posted 9 June 2006 It's all about £Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£ They would reduce the premier to 18 saying the players shouldn't be playing so many games. Then a year later they'd make the champions league bigger and have more games in that.

Then a year later they'd make the champions league bigger and have more games in that. Precisely. By amazing coincidence, the "G14" clubs also have a policy of reducing the maximum limit of leagues to 18 clubs. Has Sepp fallen into their pocket? If so, it's time someone pulled him out!
Swedging Posted 9 June 2006 Posted 9 June 2006 I reckon we should reduce the Premiership down to 5 teams ... then refuse to have anything to do with them anymore. No need for that - just make the Arse, Manu and Chelski sod off into some tedious European superleague
breadandcheese Posted 9 June 2006 Posted 9 June 2006 Fifa want to reduce the number of games players play? How about reducing the number of pointless international games. Confederations Cup, Pointless friendly after pointless friendly. In a straight choice between club game or country, football at club level always wins out. Sepp Blatter should realise that the club game is the bread and butter, what people want to see, and not more internationals and Fifa tournaments. Too much of Fifa trying to assert itself on world football for a slice of the lucrative rights that go along with it. Thank goodness Blatter is showing it to be the worthless organisation it is.

You don't really mean that do you? After all, it is our cup. 1997 & 2000. Nice avatar, by the way.
Foxes til i die Posted 17 June 2006 Posted 17 June 2006 You should know that Fifa want the premier league to be reduced to 18 teams, how will this effect us? In our dreams is promotion but i think it will be harder with these rules
