I think Arrival goes under the radar from what I see and is 1 of the best sci fi movies of recent times

Need to rewatch this too.

Dornan was a massive surprise! There had been leaks suggesting Woodall was taking on Aragorn but they managed to keep Dornan seriously quiet. I think he'll do well, but it will won't be a patch on Viggo's work. Winslet is apparently playing Sméagol's grandmother.

Jury out on this one tbh.

I know there's only a certain amount that can be done with the Middle Earth IP but this seems like a story just being told for its own sake to make a bit of wonga.

Passengers I remember had some weird ethical thing that annoyed people. I think I remember what it was but it might be a spolier so I'll leave it.

It was only ok as a movie IMO.

Unfortunately it was released around the time #MeToo was bubbling under the surface so people were calling out the connotations of a man waking a woman up from cryosleep because he fancied the shit out of her. It was another change from the original spec that didn't work - in the original script the malfunctioning ship was ejecting cryopods into space so he woke her up to save her life. Instead they ended up with huge moral questions about consent.

Yeah in the movie wasn't he also dooming her to eventual death as she couldn't be put back into cryosleep again?

Nah but it's fine cos despite his condemning her to death and trapping her on a ship with no escape cos he got a hard on watching her sleep, she ended up falling in love with him anyway, presumably because of the implication.

Yeah.

It's a fair point especially in this day and age but there are also signs of it being for artistic reasons/sheer love of the source material especially with the original artistic teams still being involved, so there is still hope. I saw War of the Rohirrim at the cinema (which bombed) but LOVED it; I think they're happy to do smaller scale character driven pieces within Middle Earth that can fit into the original films as an extra deep dive into parts they didn't didn't/couldn't cover in the original trilogy.

With this due to come out in December 27 and Colbert's Shadows of the Past in production, I think they might be trying to create a new trilogy of 'lost chapters' coming out in the same 1-year gap pattern of the original trilogy. Don't know what the third could be but I'm sure millions would pay money to see a 90 minute epic of Eowyn trying to win MasterChef with her fish soup.

“She looks like Gollum’s Nan” is now a massive complement.

Cant believe there still making these, first two were okay but last one was so bad. De niro and Stiller just both look too old to still be doing this.

Next up will be a remake of the first one with Stiller in De Niro's role and Tom Holland and Zendaya.

Just re-watched Excalibur for the umpteenth time.

Best adaptation of the King Arthur saga by far.

And the cast! Gabriel Byrne, Patrick Stewart, Helen Mirren, Liam Neeson, Nicol WIlliamson, Cherie Lunghi, Ciaran Hinds, the list goes on...

The use of Wagner, fits like a glove.

The gorgeous Irish landscape (Wicklow County).

I love Boorman's movies. Next up is Point Blank.

Finally watched There will be Blood at the weekend. Really enjoyed it although not the easiest of watches. Unsurprisingly Daniel Day Lewis stole the show.

The Mummy (2026) was looking forward to watching this and it was pants. Boring story and pretty much uneventful. Wouldn’t recommend, especially if you enjoyed the original one.

Out of the Blue (1980)

out-of-the-blue-1200-1200-675-675-crop-0

Dennis Hopper took over directing, re-wrote the script and made one of the best movies entering the Eighties ever.

The girl in this is phenomenal.

Also a great look at Vancouver in the very late 70ies. And the punk scene. And a tragic tale of an utterly dysfunctional family.

So highly regarded a film that Natasha Lyonne and Chlöe Sevigny financed the restauration.

Bumblebee (2018)

The best Transformers movie out of the newer ones, the most truthful to the original animated series.

Still... These robot faces look bloody ugly.

Forced, rather cringeworthy love story between Bumblebee's human friend (Spike Witwicky in the original) and her neighbor, that in the end goes nowhere (a kiss on the cheek).

And the neighbor serves little to no purpose, other than just being around.

Forced DEI.

John Cena was a terrible casting choice.

The men are all pretty much incompetent idiots. A trend that would later continue with screenwriter Sarah Hodson in Birds of Prey and The Flash, two more movies that took a dump on the source material. Spot a leitmotif? I do.

Would've loved to see more robots, especially Autobots, on Earth.
