Jaspa Posted 14 September 2012 Posted 14 September 2012 http://www.herefordt...its_own/?ref=mr Leftover cabbage sprouts 12-inch foliage in less than a fortnight Comments are great Biomech says... 2:22pm Tue 11 Sep 12 Are you taking the ****? I know that the Hereford Times newsfeeds rarely update with more than one story every 2-3 days, but this must be a joke? A cabbage - grows a leaf. That's now news? And yet, surprisingly, when people submit stories of local businesses winning national awards and people doing charity bike rides from John O'Groats to Lands End... you ignore them. What an absolutely pathetic paper.

The Doctor Posted 15 September 2012 Posted 15 September 2012 http://www.examiner....an-creationists Dr. Pepper’s ‘Evolution of Flavor’ angers Christian creationists A recent Doctor Pepper ad touting the “Evolution of Flavor†angers Christians who reject the scientific theory of evolution. Controversy began after a tongue in cheek ad suggesting the popular soda played a pivotal role in the evolution of man appeared on Dr. Pepper’s Facebook page. The ad appeared September 13, and immediately drew angry response from Christians who reject the scientific theory of evolution. The following is a sample of the many comments left by Christian creationists: "I love Dr. Pepper but hate this photo. Forget evolution... Jesus all the way!" "Well, there goes my support for this company." "I ain't no freaking chimp. No more Dr Pepper for my household. God Bless y'all." "Well you might think you came from a monkey but I came from Jesus I'll pray for you" ... Once the Christian creationists began their attack on the Dr.Pepper ad, Reddit's atheism subreddit joined the fray, after a photo and link to the ad was posted with the following comment: Dr.Pepper just posted this on their Facebook and are already receiving backlash from Christians for promoting evolution. Many redditors responded to the call, upholding reason and science, and ridiculing religious superstition. One of the most popular comments on the Reddit thread read: “The day your faith is shaken by a Dr. Pepper ad is the day you should probably start reconsidering your faith.†Aaaah, butt-hurt religtards. Is there any better thing? Still - if you're offended by a drinks ad, maybe the world isn't for you. r/atheism's comments are absolutely crackling mind.

davieG Posted 1 October 2012 Posted 1 October 2012 A supermarket in Ipswich hired a worker and then had to sack him because he had been banned for shoplifting. Vishal Patel, 24, got a job at Sainsbury's Warren Heath store despite facing a UK-wide ban from the chain. He had been given a suspended sentence by magistrates in Ipswich for stealing a bottle of spirits from the same store a year ago. Sainsbury's said it withdrew the job offer when it realised Patel, of Dog's Head Street in Ipswich, was banned. The supermarket said Patel had only been in training and had not worked on the shop floor. A spokesperson said: "Mr Patel was convicted of crimes and banned from all our stores a year ago. "He neglected to mention his banning or conviction on his application form or at the subsequent interview and as soon as this came to our attention we rescinded his job offer." Patel refused to comment.

Terry Vance Garner, 70, went to feed his animals last Wednesday on his farm by the coast, but never returned. His dentures and pieces of his body were found by a family member in the pig enclosure, but the rest of his remains had been consumed. The Coos County district attorney's office said that one of the animals had previously been aggressive with Garner. But investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the farmer could have suffered a medical emergency, such as a heart attack. The animals are estimated by the authorities to weigh 700lb (320kg).

The couple, who live in Bedford, had planted the drug in their garden. Police officers were astounded when they spotted the plant. They have collected it and a spokesperson said it would be disposed of. The couple will face no action from the police. The officers took to their @bedfordlpt Twitter account to express their surprise at the find, saying: "Seized today. Elderly couple bought shrub at car boot sale, tended carefully - biggest cannabis plant we had seen!!"
davieG Posted 10 October 2012 Posted 10 October 2012 Why bother with the expense of lines at all? Stevenage giant cycle lane creates pedestrian confusion The lane markings are forcing pedestrians to keep to the small walkways, resident Neil Brinkworth said A new cycle lane that dominates a bridge in Hertfordshire is causing confusion for pedestrians who are staying on the narrow edges. The bridge over Fairlands Way, Stevenage, was resurfaced by the county council's highways unit last month. Resident Neil Brinkworth said he was "astonished" at the council's work, saying "it's crazy watching everybody blindly obeying the lanes". The council said the new lines met "current codes and standards". Mr Brinkworth, who crosses the bridge two to three times a week, said: "It's making everybody go down the edge of the bridge. 'Makes no sense' "As a nation we are good at following instructions, but it does make you think 'why have they done that?' "It's rarely used by cyclists. Was it a health and safety issue? I can't recall any issue of anyone crashing on the bridge. It makes no sense at all." Hertfordshire County Council said: "The lines in place on the Fairlands Way path have been installed in accordance with the scheme design and to current codes and standards. "The lines are not intended to form pedestrian lanes, nor pedestrian exclusion zones. They are guidance for cyclists. "Pedestrians are free to walk wherever they like. The signing provided at the bridge indicates this to bridge users."

Guest MattP Posted 12 October 2012 Posted 12 October 2012 http://uk.reuters.com/article/2012/10/12/uk-nobel-peace-eu-idUKBRE89B0D920121012 The EU has transformed most of Europe "from a continent of wars to a continent of peace," Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said in announcing the award in Oslo. "The EU is currently undergoing grave economic difficulties and considerable social unrest. The Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to focus on what it sees as the EU's most important result: the successful struggle for peace and reconciliation and for democracy and human rights," he said. Jaglund praised the EU for rebuilding Europe after World War Two and for its role in spreading stability after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The debt crisis afflicting the single currency zone has brought economic instability to several member states, and rioting has erupted on the streets of Athens and Madrid as austerity measures have bitten hard. The prize, worth $1.2 million (747 thousand pounds), will be presented in Oslo on December 10. The decision by the five-member panel, led by Jagland who is also Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, was unanimous. The EU won from a field of 231 candidates including Russian dissidents and religious leaders working for Muslim-Christian reconciliation. Conceived in secret at a chateau near Brussels, what is now the European Union was created by the 1957 Treaty of Rome, signed with great fanfare in the Italian capital's 15th century Palazzo dei Conservatori.
