Thracian's Match Ratings Thread.

Was trying to be slightly positive.

But really Only Clemence, n'gotty and Fulop are good enough. From what we have seen.

Chambers is but not as a centre mid, he's a full back.

Cort can do it at this level, but just doesn't look fit yet, and wonder if he ever will be.

He hasn't been fit for 7 years.

OK - so I know it's wrong to argure player ratings based on a poxy Match Live console, but Joey Mattock was mentioned either defensively or in attack, or committing fouls every other line

It appeared that he was all over the place with a decent work rate unsurpassed by others. I can't remember Stearz being mentioned..

Right or wrong?

It is hard to judge based on what I'd want and ask or what Megson clearly wants.

But as it's his team and as you asked:

Fulop 8 (The guy's a rock. More quality saves, safe handling, made his goalkeeping look simple. Kicking his only fault again)

Stearman 7.5 (Played his part in a clean sheet against a difficult side and was trying to inspire attacks right til the end. Tireless.)

McAuley 7 (Sound as ever).

N'Gotty 8 (Such a vital figure. Broke up so many attacks. Pity about some of his passing.).

Kisnorbo 6 (Defensively okay. Distribution as usual. Another who seems so one-footed).

Mattock 6.5 (Drew the short straw and stuck to it. Almost every Championship defender would have trouble against Kightly and on three or four occasions he was left for dead. But he did good things too and tried so hard to make a difference in attack. Had he really committed at the end he might have got onto Stearman's final cross. Wasn't always comfortable but he too played his part in the clean sheet).

Chambers 4 (Did some good things then invariably gave the ball away or got caught in possession. Not the answer in that role).

Kishishev 5 (Just chugged around but never really threatened to make anything happen).

King 6.5 (Decent debut as emphasised by his completing 90 minutes. Passed the ball quickly and mostly accurately along the ground. But used in such a restricted role by Megson that it was a shame. It meant that instead of two defensive and one attacking midfielder we had three holding players. Only when Kish went off and Hume dropped back did we look at all threatening and did King benefit from having runners to compliment his game. The extent of his restriction and Megson's clear instructions for him to keep things solid and simple was emphasised by his having no shots and rarely approaching the attacking penalty area. King, given free rein has lots of shots and forever attacks the box).

Hume 5.5 (Largely ineffective until he dropped into midfield. Chasing lost causes is costing him far too much energy and blunting his sharpness for the job that's really needed. He takes on far more than his fair share).

Fryatt 6.5 (What do you say. Easily our most dangerous attacker. Conjured one excellent chance and shot that was saved low down but should have scored in the opening minutes. Stayed involved though and had some good touches from limited service).

Subs:

Cort 5.5 (We were far more dangerous when he came on and Hume went back. Not very dangerous mind. But more so. Partyly because we had more people going forward and trying to force a win.)

Campbell 5.5. (Again threatened and had a wonderful opportunity to win the game with a close range header than he sent straight at the keeper. Like so many of our players he was constantly slipping or falling over. God knows what he was wearing for studs)

Megson 7.5 (Accepting his mindset I thought Megson today became our first manager for years to pick arguably our strongest available team. He showed a more positive attitude in putting Cort on and driving the full-backs forward with King/Hume trying to supplement but it was asking a lot after all the defending they'd done and the recent matches. We simply lacked individual class a la Kightly, we lacked pace and too often we had insufficient players forward when we attacked).

Apart from the ratings for N'Gotty (thought he was very poor in distribution, McAuley was our best centre back) and maybe Megson, I agree with the above - a very balanced review.

Chambers had a shocker in central midfield, I thought King showed a good eye for a pass and looks a better bet to partner Clemence than Chambers (until Wesolowski comes back).

One rating I would add for the crowd - 5: At times there was better than usual singing/encouragement. However, the massed groans at King's first mistake and the odd error from Mattock were not on in my opinion. I also thought the booing at half time and full time was unjustified and only happened because we booed on Saturday (which was justified). We have seen much worse over the last few years, there were a few flickers of things happening and we restricted a decent Championship team to a few long range efforts. We had a fairly young side with little experience of Premiership-level football - only N'Gotty has really played at a higher level for a decent spell. We cannot and should not expect Premiership quality from the current squad.

I'm confused... are there 2 Andy Kings?

Where was the one who bosses the midfield and rains dangerous shots in, peppering the opposition's goal in an all out 90 minute tactical assault?

I don't like this defensive, 1st XI version. Do you Thracian? He's exactly the kind of chosen man who's keeping our amazing youngsters out!

Wrong. Mattock was lively and involved (I think he should be encouraged forward even more) but Stearman also did a good job on the other side. I wouldn't have said he was a wing-back, but he did get up and down, worked hard and looked like he cared.

Mattock and King had some tough jobs yesterday. King was up against an old school pro in Seyi Olofinjana and he more or less lost that battle. Nothing shameful about that cuz Seyi is a class player. But I did see signs of what Thrac was raving about.

Mattock was up against Michael Kightly and the willy puller that Kightly is, Mattock was likely to struggle. And struggle he did.

You don't think King was under-supported in midfield then? To me you need passers all through midfield and while Chambers got his foot in often enough, time and again he simply failed to follow up with an accurate pass. With Weso and Clemence in there, King would have found it much easier and would have seen far more of the ball.

Course I do think he needed a better supported midfield around him. Clemence and Weso with him would've been more ideal perhaps. But over-all on the night he didn't too bad for a debutant. It'll be interesting to see what Megson made of him and if he'll play against Wednesday, depending on Clemence's availability of course.

Short memory, do you remeber someone else play 3 5 2 at home every week?

Unfortunately we haven`t got a midfield 3 of Izzet, Savage and Lennon and International class wing-backs like Guppy to support the likes of Heskey up front.

532 may have worked once upon a time and may still work very well away from home like it did at Villa because the onus is on the home side to attack and have the lions share of possession so 5 at the back to soak up the pressure and hitting our opponents on the break may well work. However, as the home side we need to be more creative and the team needs to get the home support on side to bury teams and the only way to do that is to attack IMO with at very least a 442.

If he drops King instead of Kishishev or Chambers to play Clemence I'm not bothering with this place for a couple of weeks, it'll be a f**king nightmare.

If you prefer Chambers or Kishishev in our midfield don't let me inhibit you.

I thought it was poor form to boo at the end. Anyone agree?

well, logic tells me its not clever to boo a team the manager admits is already low in confidence.... do we all want them to top themselves or somthing!?

ou actually read what he said he was saying King should stay in and 1 of the other 2 be dropped

You missed Fez's point. He said he'd be dissappointed if King missed out in order to allow Kish/Chambers a starting spot in central midfield.

You missed the point.

If you can't see that, you're stupid.

You should write a book.

'101 ways to miss the point whilst maintaining irreverence'

Why should he bother? You've obviously written it already...

I didn't miss the point at all - you chose to misinterpret my reply. Nothing unusual about that.

As for being stupid - I'd be more comfortable being stupid than as clever as you pretend to be.

What I read was that *.*Fez would be unable to console Thracian despite his earnest attempts so to do. (I was watching a Jane Austen movie last night).

I think it was "in you endo" Not the movie, that was Persuation

Fulop - 6.5 - Solid brilliant save 5-10 minutes into the game few others in second half

McAuley - 6 - Wasnt noticeable dissapointing as he was captain

N'Gotty - 6.5 - Doesn't have the pace but makes up for that with his strength

Kisnorbo - 5.5 - Dissapointing why does he always have to hoof sliced a few aswell

Stearman - 7 - Only defender that got his tackles in had a v. good game defencively

Mattock - 6.5 - Opposite to Stearman good going forward but in second half was left on his own AGAIN backed off Kightly which gave them a couple of oppertunities

Chambers - 4 - Worst ive seen him kept getting tackled and a few poor passes

King - 6.5 - Good seeing as it was his debut nothing outstanding but did basics well

Kishishev - 6.5 - Looked alot better than he has looked commited in the tackle and confident on the ball

Hume - 6 - Not his usual self struggled to create and went missing for long periods

Fryatt - 6.5 - Couple of chances he could've buried but didnt pass enough didnt win headers and kept the ball to long

Cort - 4 - 1 good chance i thought was in tried harder but still not convinced

Campbell - 4 - had a couple of headers and a run through the Wolves defence but not long enough to make an impact
