Daggers Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 Do they work? Hideous places if you ask me but I've never been to one and I need to fast-track my fitness from purely bike riding. I need to seriously step up my aerobic performance within six months - anyone reckon I could manage it just by including swimming in my weekly schedule?

Fit people sneer at you. The machines are always taken. Oh and other people's sweat is an err... acquired taste?

It's all about commitment etc, if you can commit yourself to going eg 3 times a week for the next 12 months, or whatever the membership plan, then it's worth it!!
Daggers Posted 10 January 2008 Author Posted 10 January 2008 Hows about running Daggers??? I treat that with disdain. Running is just uncontrolled rushing and I find it very unbecoming. Not only that but I have a couple of well-****ed knees that I have to nurse through the process and high impact activities are out. I guess I am going to have to cut out the pop and cobs on a Saturday again so I'm going to make this match count! Bugger. Stupid job.

That's what they call me, Mr.Commitment. At least they do when they aren't calling me terribly unsavoury things and throwing small rocks. I reckon I need to find a cheap one. A very cheap one.

It didnt have people who only cared what they brand of sports clothes they wore. It had Builders and people like that straight from work!!! Mind you thats no help for you as you live in Brum.....and Saffron Lane Center is now shut. Hope that helped
davieG Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 Find a quiet room in the house puts some up beat music on and do some exercises to it including dancing.with the door shut/locked it won't matter if you look a twat. Set yourself up with some regular moves to the beat, not sexual ones and plan a time to do it everyday. Make sure you do some warm up and cool down exercises. It takes discipline but it's free. Failing that get yourself down to the local community hall and join the ladies aerobics class.
Guest Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 Exercise is all down to personal taste, and although this may be stating the obvious, you have to find something that a) keeps you motivated and b) keeps you interested. I quite like going to the gym (the overall experience can be ruined by other members, but people in general tend to be arseholes). The types of people that you get are varied, and people watching can help pass the time whilst you exercise. Swimming is a good way at building up overall fitness, without placing unnecessary strain upon joints, muscles etc.

There's one up the road from us for £30 a month - is that normal?

It's the usual rate!! Although I think before joining a gym, you could try jogging for 20 minutes in a park or on the streets and buld up from there, for free?????
Daggers Posted 10 January 2008 Author Posted 10 January 2008 That's me. :: Although I think before joining a gym, you could try jogging for 20 minutes in a park or on the streets and buld up from there, for free????? I rip off 30-50 miles on the bike on a regular basis and do 10-20miles daily...but I hate jogging. I hate the concept of jogging and I would happily run over every lycra & headband clad buffoon on the pavements of Erdington. I see running about as being as enjoyable as colonic irrigation. I think I need to swap the road miles on the bike for some weights - but also to change the way I cycle as the weight loss has ebbed of late...but that may be more due to the food on offer in the staff canteen
MC Prussian Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 I don't do gyms, way too costly and not even that effective... Apart from regular exercises like push-ups and sit-ups, I've been doing my runs around just outside the house in a nice countryside environment for years now and it's totally working. Wouldn't want to trade it in for a membership. Never.
DBEightyFive Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 I hated the whole mass chain gyms like Cannons and LA Fitness...I now go to a family run boxing gym in Cov and the atmosphere and camaraderie is brilliant, no one looks down at you because you new and unfit and the regulars really help and encourage you along. I actually look forward to going now
hairy Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 Didn't Jade Goodie release a fitness video. I am sure you could find it in a bargin bin somewhere.

I went to a gym for about 4 months a few years ago & lost 5 stone by sticking to it 3 nights a week & walked 1 & half miles to get there & back good times & met several tasty birds ahem sorry ladies aswell. Dunno about swimming im not a fan of getting my tits out

I can't take much lower body exercise either so I took up boxing which was fantastic for me i'd definately recommend it.

Thracian Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 One of my sisters offered me a gym membership for Christmas. I politely steered her in a different direction. It's like volunteering for punishment block. And knowing that others are "people watching" only makes the thought of it worse. It's almost like being watched while you're on the loo. It's bad enough being out of condition without demonstrating the fact to others. Give me fresh air and solitude anytime.
Nationwider Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 I joined one in January about five years ago - I lasted about six months. As soon as the weather got better, I stopped going and got back into running, until my knees got shot to pieces. I quite enjoyed the cardio training - treadmill, rowing, bike, x-trainer for about 15 minutes each. I just found it really boring after a while and resented going after work. I don't wish to stereotype, but I found the gym I went to to be populated by people who were very appearance obsessed and wanted their exercise to be very public. Gyms work for a lot of people, but there are cheaper ways to exercise. For general stamina, you can't beat swimming, which I find physically (there are less aches and pains after) and mentally less stressful than the gym. I'm still unfit however. Can you recommend me a cheap bike, Daggers?
Daggers Posted 10 January 2008 Author Posted 10 January 2008 Can you recommend me a cheap bike, Daggers? Daggers don't do cheap when it comes to bikes. Go for the lightest with 700cc wheels, durable (Kevlar-lined) road tyres for road work...stay clear of Moutnain bikes. Evans have a sale on - the Trek double for £399 looks value for money If you have more to spend then the Focus Cayo has won awards for two years running and is now 20% off for last years model at Wiggle You going to put me up for the night when I cycle across England from the Lakes to Tyne & Wear?
