purpleronnie Posted 30 November 2008 Posted 30 November 2008 Love both. Chris Rock makes me a little uncomfortable sometimes (his rant about black people vs. "niggaz" is a bit squirmish!) but he's genuinely hilarious. I think Christopher Titus is amongst my favourite US Comedians, though. He and John Pinette. I've heard that and thought it was very good and I don't know why you would squirm.
Corky Posted 30 November 2008 Posted 30 November 2008 I thought Michael McIntyre was pretty good on Live at the Apollo the other night. I'd never really watched any of his stand up before, only seen him on panel shows where I thought he was shit, but I actually enjoyed his set (we'll get past the annoying voice eventually). I can only really judge him on what I've seen on Mock The Week, and I don't think he's very funny on that. Maybe as a stand-up he is better.
Finnegan Posted 30 November 2008 Posted 30 November 2008 I tried really hard to dislike Michael McIntyre. His voice and generally excited demeanour annoy the crap out of me and a lot of his content doesn't really thrill me at all. But I find myself laughing consistently at his material so he has to be doing something right. I was a little disappointed with Rhod Gilbert's set on that episode of Live at the Apollo - in fact I've seen Gilbert AND Rich Hall do far better justice to themselves before. They're both absolute legends, two of my real genuine favourites at the moment.
Thracian Posted 30 November 2008 Posted 30 November 2008 Where's Jethro? He should be Number One Went to see him in Birmingham and he had me in tears of laughter.

Yeah I watched that he was pretty good. Then Rich Hall came on, doing a bit on terrorism I about choked on my Ice Cream, fooking hilarious.
Daggers Posted 30 November 2008 Author Posted 30 November 2008 Peter Kay is damn funny, naturally funny as well whereas when you watch some comedians put on the spot they're not that witty no matter how funny their material is. A superbly talented bloke - watched his stand-up show on the way to the game yesterday, brilliance and not elitist.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 30 November 2008 Posted 30 November 2008 Anyone saying McIntyre is shit needs a rethink. Went to see him in Nottingham, and it was the funniest thing I think I've ever seen in my life. Rich Hall is so underrated it's unbelievable. So is Sean Lock. I've gone right off Frankie Boyle though, all his stuff seems the same.

Sean Lock: So right

They'd be my top five.
Nationwider Posted 30 November 2008 Posted 30 November 2008 My hastily compiled current top ten favourites, in no particular order, and based (obviously) on nothing but my personal preference for their whole body of work, including non stand-up stuff: Izzard, Merton, Bailey, Brand, Hardy, Lock, Noble, Graffoe, Ó Briain and god help me for the shame of admitting this, Vine.

Tim Vine is the gosh darn man.

I quite like Tim Vine. He might not be "fashionable" but his one liner delivery is almost perfect. Forgot to add Lee Mack to my top comedians, stupidly.

Alexikokopops Posted 1 December 2008 Posted 1 December 2008 Bill Hicks. Also, I think I might just leave my opinions on this topic in the hands of Finners, I've pretty much agreed with everything he's said in here.
Phube Posted 1 December 2008 Posted 1 December 2008 Spike Milligan was an absolute genius and a vast majority of that top list are absolutely awful. Eddie Izzard's probably the only person on that list that's consistently hilarious for ninety minutes. I think this will be down to his, errr, slightly racist views/comedies, tarnishing his other better stuff... I thought Michael McIntyre was pretty good on Live at the Apollo the other night. I'd never really watched any of his stand up before, only seen him on panel shows where I thought he was shit, but I actually enjoyed his set (we'll get past the annoying voice eventually). I have only seen his stand-up on BBC1, but it's enough for me to know that he is hillarious!! And now want his DVD!
Chromophobia Posted 1 December 2008 Posted 1 December 2008 No Stewart Lee in the top 10?? The top five in the favorite 10 are all shite, and the bottom five are ok. Eddie Izzard clearly the best there though. I used to really like Ricky Gervais, but I think he's lost it big time. People just don't get Harry Hill either.
Durnerz Posted 1 December 2008 Posted 1 December 2008 Top 5. 1. Lee Evans 2. Billy Connolly 3. Michael Mcintyre 4. Roy Chubby Brown 5. Russell Howard Worst 5. 1. Jo Brand 2. Gina Yasherie 3. Ricky Gervais 4. Ricky Tomlinson 5. Jim Davidson Alan Carr is a great comedian too in my opinion, if you actually listen to his set and see how well formulated his jokes are they are clever, especially as he focuses on social satire very similar to Michael Mcintyre. How is Peter Kay even near anyones top 5? Very average comedian with one set spanning 3 DVD's.
Joe. Posted 1 December 2008 Posted 1 December 2008 Peter Kay is a superb comedian, so natural compared to some "comedians" out there.
Sir Fynwy Posted 1 December 2008 Posted 1 December 2008 Where's Jethro? He should be Number One He's the worst comedian I've ever had the misfortune to see live, the only saving grace is the fact that it's almost impossible to under stand what he's going on about. Butlins adult weekends have a lot to answer for!
Tommeh Posted 1 December 2008 Posted 1 December 2008 If I was picking 5 people who crack me up the most it'd be. - David Mitchell - Rich Hall - Hugh Dennis - Simon Amstell - Bill Bailey
Joe. Posted 1 December 2008 Posted 1 December 2008 I don't actually know how Rhod Gilbert survives one of his own performances. His lungs must take some battering throughout.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 1 December 2008 Posted 1 December 2008 Also, where's Richard Pryor in that list?
Trav Le Bleu Posted 1 December 2008 Posted 1 December 2008 Funny Eddie Izzard Harry Hill Emo Phillips Spike Milligan (Dagger's knows NOWT! ) Jimmy Carr Andy Hamilton Russ Noble Chris Morris Jeremy Hardy Russell Howard Tommy Cooper Morcambe and Wise Not Funny Sandy Toksvig Victoria Wood Joan Rivers (women just aren't funny apart from the occasional French and Saunders or Jo Caulfield) Alan Carr (I'm gay and ugly - laugh at me) Max Boyce Roy Fatso Brown Jim Davidson (Send him out to entertain the troops - keep them mean!) Harry Enfield (still doing the same jokes he was doing in the 80s) I used to think Lee Evans was funny, but his range is limited.
Finchy Posted 1 December 2008 Posted 1 December 2008 Stewart Lee anyone? Amazed no one has mentioned him, in my opinion the best stand up around by a long way.
Alexikokopops Posted 1 December 2008 Posted 1 December 2008 Spike Milligan (Dagger's knows NOWT! ) It wasn't Dagger's list! Stewart Lee anyone? Amazed no one has mentioned him, in my opinion the best stand up around by a long way. Well they have No Stewart Lee in the top 10??
