Just like give all your players an MBE after winning the Ashes, we win the Ashes 9/10 times and all we get is a drunk dance from Shane Warne with a fag in his mouth

First man in 100 years to win 3 Golds at one games. Why not reward something people are interested in for a change.

Sure, but give it him when he has retired, not when he is still competing.

Steve Redgrave is an example of how I believe it should be done.

They are given out too easily, ridiculous really. MBE's and OBE's are given out to virtually anyone famous these days (Les Fedinand MBE!!!!!!).

Those awards don't really mean a thing any more because everyone has them. When somebody does something worthy of note (Hoy, Redgrave), they are left with only one award to hand out.

Being awarded a gateway to privilege for doing something you enjoy and in most cases have already and continue to receive payment for and that includes all those civil servants, industrial giants etc is something I just can't comprehend.

Being very anti this type of thing i used to be ok once with certain sports people being recognised but only when they where genuine amateurs from 'poor' backgrounds where achievement had been gain against the odds.

They should rename it 'I'm a Celebrity get me in the Palace'

For such a rabid anti-tax crusader, Jon, It's suprising that you you can support this dregs of feudal Britain.

For the tax payers this is a financial burden. Many hours of civil service time and much of the tax payers’ money must be spent seeking nominations, vetting the nominees, approving the names and making the announcements. Even the politicians of the right who usually are the first to object to what they see as excessive taxation, are happy for the state to dig into the pockets of the people for this nonsense, however.

Given a choice it seems unlikely that there would be many who would not find it absurd that their money should be taken from them to be spent on deciding who is worthy of high public esteem, particularly when life-saving public services are under-funded. Most likely many would think that insofar as they wanted to know who was worthy of a particular regard they could make the decision themselves. They would perhaps rather spend their cash on buying a book or a bottle of whiskey, than have it taken by the Inland Revenue so that they might be told that they should bow before Sir Anthony Jackalent.

Really... What about the Birthday Honours list? Not forgetting the one off specials of Jubilee honours, Coronation Honours, Queen Mother's birthday honours, THE Queen Mother's special 'funeral honours list etc etc etc etc.

Which featured some of the following fantastic people.... Steve Bull MBE, Les Ferdinand MBE, Dot Cotton MBE, Mike Baldwin MBE, Betty (hotpot) Driver MBE. Basically do your job for long enough and you'll get a reward. On top of the 100's of thousands of pounds you got paid to do it. BRAVO!!
