Guest Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 Apparently on an interview with Radio Lancashire, Blackpool's chairman said that Blackpool have put in a high bid for Campbell, but he would rather sit on his promotion wage with us. On what he's on here though, who can blame him? I still can't comprehend why anybody genuinelt believed he'd be worth nearly £20,000 a week at the time. You're right, can't really blame him but it displays clearly the character of the man, anybody with any pride in what they do should want to actually do it and to the best of their ability. Mostly it's disappointing

Mostly it's disappointing It's only disappointing on the club's part for me, not Campbell's. You just wouldn't move clubs when Blackpool could offer, what, £6-9K a week max? It's a huge difference that nobody in their right mind would accept.
Jam Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 I still can't comprehend why anybody genuinelt believed he'd be worth nearly £20,000 a week at the time. What's there to comprehend, the season before he signed for us he scored 20+goals for Birmingham and the season before that he impressed in Brentfords cup run banging in the goals. The people who were involved with signing him at the time would of been convinced enough by his track-record that he's worth the price tag. He turned down the chance of staying with Birmingham and playing in the Premier League to come play for us , so we needed to offer him decent wages. He was a good prospect, and I belive at the time the fee and wages were justified, but heinsight is a great thing and on reflection it was not a great deal. However having said that I beleive he could still do well for us. He did well last year in the championship with Blackpool, so let's give him another chance. Get Behind him !

Yeah but almost £20,000 is an astronomical fee for a lower-half Championship side, regardless of who it is.

It's a huge difference that nobody in their right mind would accept. I know, and that's where me being idealistic just doesn't cut it because that's not the world we live in. I can only speak personally, but if I were lucky enough to obtain such a potentially lucrative and short career, I'd want to be playing mainly because it's something I love doing and because frankly if he was actually any good, he could prove it and earn an even more lucrative contract. I don't know how hard they tried to reach an agreement, and whether he would take the wage cut at Blackpool offset by some amount of payoff by us so that the drop in wages wasn't quite as significant, but surely better to take a small hit in the wage packet unless you really don't believe in your own ability to reach any higher level than you currently are? Also does he not risk his entire career if he end up spending the rest of his time here doing nothing at all?
Joe. Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 I know the money is great, but wouldn't you rather be playing every week? Oh come on, be realistic. Nobody in their right mind would take a wage cut of comfortably over £10-15k a week. He signed a four year contract with us at the time which means we're basically stuck with him until then unless somebody comes reasonably close to what he's already on here. But let's face it, nobody is.
flanimal Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 I'd rather play regular football. Is Campbell even in the squads? £20,000 a week or not, it appears Nigel Pearson is just keeping him out the way until his contact is up - then he can kick him out. It's an expensive point-to-prove.
Jam Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009  I think you'll find he didn't Haha, ok he didn't score 20 goals at Birmingham, he scored 9. But the point still stands that to attract him and to convince him to leave Birmingham who would be playing their football in the premiership we needed to offer good wages. Let's not forget he played very well for Birmingham and the season before at Brentford. I'd like to see him stay at city, but that's my opinion.
Monkey_Business Posted 13 July 2009 Posted 13 July 2009 His focus seemed to be clearly on leaving city earlier this summer, so it looks like money is keeping him here so far. Personally I would prefer to be playing every week, having said that who knows how peoples mentalilty and priorities change when in these situations of inflated salary. P.S Hi all
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 14 July 2009 Posted 14 July 2009 I just we could off load D.J. He is an expensive ball and chain to the club, and has no desire to play for the club. Gutless and greedy. Possibly the worst buy ever.

Leicesterboi Posted 14 July 2009 Posted 14 July 2009 DJ needs to remember where he came from. He was playing non league football for Yeading 4 years ago. He should be priveliged to have the opportunity to work at a club like this. I personally like him as a player and think he looks more dangerous than the likes of Dickov, Hayles and the dead wood that were keeping him out last season. I'd like to see him and Nige bury the hatchet and let him prove his worth to the club and show he merits the chance to play and train with our club.
Fox92 Posted 14 July 2009 Posted 14 July 2009 Worse than Akinbiyi? Are you mental Or even Josh Low. Anyway, I want Nigel to get rid of him but at the minute when we have only Dickov/Fryatt/Howard/Campbell as our recognized strikers then he should stay for back up purposes. When we get one or two strikers in thats when we should sell/loan out... ... hopefully sell.

I've seen subbuteo players which looked more threatening than Dickov last season. At least with subbuteo players they aren't gonna run offside unless you flick em to do so
lou Posted 15 July 2009 Posted 15 July 2009 Worse than Akinbiyi? Are you mental At least AA tried maybe its just his style but DJ doesnt seem to try too hard To be fair its not the players fault if someone pays over the odds for them
philayres200 Posted 15 July 2009 Posted 15 July 2009 Good news. Derby have just bought Shaun Barker from Blackpool for £1m. Now Ollie can buy DJ! Great news.Maybe we can get shot of him to Blackpool now and then get some closure on all this banter. Then when he is gone we can move on to sorting out new strikers. I think getting rid of DJ has been more important than many have realised. We will now know that whatever the fee might be it is that + about £0.5m per annum ( his wages ), available to go into the kitty, and that will help NP to evaluate which players he can go for.
davieG Posted 16 July 2009 Posted 16 July 2009 Press conference at Vicarage Road this afternoon to "unveil and striker from Leicester who was on loan in the Championship last season". According to Talking Balls. Edited to say it's bollocks - apparently from football-rumours see escos's post below
