That's really interesting. Not so much the female vocal but the fact that he's a jazz violinist! I'm gonna" have to check this fella' out.

And with regards female jazz singers. I gotta' mention Linda Sharrock. She did harmonies, but she also did other stuff.

I've got this album on vinyl. Takes pride of place in my collection. Bought it years ago from Intoxica on Portobello Road.

The place was a veritable treasure trove of rare, obscure & collectable second-hand vinyl. Its sadly gone now, a victim of tourist footfall and rising rents.

Tragic, as it was the sort of shop the tourists went there for in the first place. You can probably buy an expensive latte in there now and just fookin' people watch all day!

Cue Linda ......

Never heard that before…. A more challenging listen, but, I’ve downloaded it and will try out the album…

I used to be a regular at Honest Johns when I lived in that part of the world…. There was another really good shop in Camden too…. Probably all gone now…. Leicester had the excellent steps ahead in the Malcolm Arcade….   I remember sick to my boots when I went into the bass clef in shoreditch to discover it’d been a trendy bar…. So many memories of drum and bass nights - Sunday School was amazing

some Jazz harp maybe?

And for the vocals…. A bit of gospel inspired jazz…. This is epic!

I like Mary Lou - very uplifting stuff.

I did stop and think before posting some Sonny S. For the uninitiated without a doubt challenging. There wasn't a lot online though. And hopefully now you've discovered the delights of Bialero & Blind Willy. I hope you enjoy.

My record collection is a testament to the fact that Intoxica, Honest Jon's & Rough Trade were all within walking distance of an office I worked at for a number of years.

Not necessarily a good thing. The pitfall of popping into a very good record shop that specialises in second-hand vinyl on a regular basis is the inherent problem you'll see something you want. The risk that it will not be there when you go back compells you to purchase. Subsequently my lunchtimes could get very costly.

And below a gent I spent a lot of money on at the time. I was buying everything by him on the Atlantic label. Mugged me off in Intoxica, they had my number for sure. Eddie Harris records from the mid to late 60's just kept turning up!

We were talking vocals right .....

I listened to both your recommendations in full, whilst cooking for the legions of Xmas visitors…!

Sonny S is most certainly a challenging listen… Portrait of Linda in 3 colours sounded like she was giving birth!  Having said that, I enjoyed a good part of it….

Basil Kirchin was also new too me and I’ve managed about 3 hours of his back catalogue so far and enjoyed a lot of it…. Charcoal sketches being the stand out

All my money as a nipper seemed to go on Vinyl and, as we are looking to move next year, I fully intend to reserve a room dedicated to a nice music set up…. My vinyl has been purely decorative for a few years now as I can find so much to download…

I remember searching for a Marcos Valle record high and low for years and my dad introduced me to Amazon…. After 90 seconds I found it and ordered it…. I felt quite cheated!  I miss thumbing through record boxes…. It’s like prospecting for gold!

@Woof (my Dad!) brought me a box set of Atlantic Jazz records when I was about 14…. It was a real revelation to me and still one of my favourite albums…. Starring Eddie Henderson doing compared to what…. I went on to see him live at Dingwalls in the 90’s…. Truly memorable

other stand out tracks include

That’s really interesting…. Like it…. I had never heard of Basil Kirchin…. Have just started to  download some bits…. Reminded my a little of Gary McFarland/ Axelrod

looking through my Jazz based collection it’s predominantly American and Brazilian…. Would like to understand a bit more about British Jazz

if you like different sounds…. Try these (only the first is British)

suspect you’ll know at least the first track…

I think we're all in a similar situation with regards British Jazz. American and Latin tends to dominate people's attention. That said there's some fantastic stuff to discover in the 60's and it is distinctly different to the American variant.

And yes I recognise portico quartet. I don't own any of their material, but i have seen them live. Same can be said for Led Bib. I do have some Gogo Penguin albums as well material from Shabaka Hutchings.

And I was massively into this lot, in all their variants, a few years ago.

Love a bit of FNM.

Absolutely loved them back in the day. I don't listen to them much nowadays but when I do it takes me back and it's great. Mike Patton is probably my favourite front man of all time..

He’s class in nearly everything he does. Listened to Peeping Tom?
