Sly Posted 19 June 2009 Posted 19 June 2009 Please can someone explain why everyone seems to think we need to sign Simon Cox? He's still unproven at a decent standard and one good season in League 1 doesn't count. As many others before him have proved it's a step up and have struggeled to peform. Previous goal machines from League One have hardly set the world alight at Championship level, including our own Matty Fryatt in fact!! League 1 - 2004/2005 - Stuart Elliott/Dean Windass - 27 goals The following year Stuart Elliott only scored 7 goals in the Championship and Dean Windass got 20 goals in League One. Windass has done okay since but Elliott has gone AWOL!! ------- League 1 - 2005/2006 - Billy Sharp/Freddy Eastwood - 23 goals Eastwood only scored 3 goals for Wolves in 2007/2008 season! League 1 - 2006/2007 - Billy Sharp - 31 goals - Billy Sharp has scored 8 goals in the past two years for sheff U. ------- League 1 - 2007/2008 - Jason Scotland - 28 goals, scored 23 goals in the Championship, exception to the rule here and the danger man on the first day of the season!! I'd prefer him over Cox. ------- League 1 - 2008/2009 - Simon Cox/Rickie Lambert - 29 goals We'll wait and see I suppose, Lamberts games/goals ratio isn't that good away bar this season. ------- These are just my thoughts, I just wonder what everyone else thought as well? Cox will be a big risk at £2m + and you just know, somewhere, out there, is a little gem waiting to be unearthed!! I just hope Nige finds him!!

Bert Posted 19 June 2009 Posted 19 June 2009 I think the main thing is, Cox scored 29 league goals in a relgation threatened side, everyone else in your list, were in teams that were near the top of the league.
Sly Posted 19 June 2009 Author Posted 19 June 2009 Get fooked there all comin Derby Charming that is!!
Lillehamring Posted 19 June 2009 Posted 19 June 2009 for most people on here, simply because we've been linked with him and he has some qualifiable record
Sly Posted 19 June 2009 Author Posted 19 June 2009 for most people on here, simply because we've been linked with him and he has some qualifiable record That's just it. Once we've signed him and he's only scored 3 goals in 40 games and hasn't scored for 4+ months, the fans will turn on him and he'll be labelled a waste of money etc etc etc

Nod.E Posted 19 June 2009 Posted 19 June 2009 He's an exciting, and young player. He has pace, and that's what we need. We haven't been linked to anyone else like this, which is why everyone is bumming off him. However, personally, i'd be pleased if we signed him.
Finnegan Posted 19 June 2009 Posted 19 June 2009 What I really want to know is - how many of the people raving about us signing him have seen him play more than two games (at the most) and the odd video of his "wondergoal" on youtube?

Sly Posted 20 June 2009 Author Posted 20 June 2009 Not any more. Word is, he's off to either Wigan or Burnley. I heard Burnley had put a bid in for Scotland last night. A bit of good news for us at least
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 21 June 2009 Posted 21 June 2009 I think the main thing is, Cox scored 29 league goals in a relgation threatened side, everyone else in your list, were in teams that were near the top of the league. I totally agree with that statement. It must be so much harder.
andy_croydz Posted 21 June 2009 Posted 21 June 2009 Seeing as we are on the subject of strikers doing well in lower divisions then struggling in a higher one... What about when Leicester buys strikers that are on fire and then all of a sudden are poor when they play for us? I've got a few examples... Obviously Akinbiyi is a big one, he couldn't cut it in the premiership but before he arrived here he was on top form. David Connolly... Scored for fun in the Championship for many years with Wimbledon and West Ham, came here and in his first 20 games only scored something like 4-5 goals. Matty Fryatt... Is on fire, joins us and scores on his debut and then goes well off the boil. DJ Campbell... Did very well in lower leagues, did pretty well in the Championship before he joined us, then went AWOL with his scoring boots. Steve Howard... Scored something like 20 goals for Derby in the Championship, came to us and could hardly hit a barn door apart from the hat-trick away at West Brom. What is it with Leicester and turning good strikers bad?
Mark Posted 21 June 2009 Posted 21 June 2009 What is it with Leicester and turning good strikers bad? We hadn't had a proper midfield for 4/5 seasons, remember when Hume had to keep dropping back into midfield every single game to get a touch of the ball? Last season was the first in a while where the entire team knew what they were doing, we wasn't relying on the strikers as all the midfielders were chipping in regularly.

True, but we so seem to have a record of good strikers coming here with goal scoring pedigree and then just not scoring much. Connolly was a class player, he scored 20+ for Wimbledon 2 seasons in a row and also scored a few for Feyenoord when he was younger, comes here and scored like 10 in 40 odd games. The next season he started doing a lot better, scored 3 in 2 but then we sold him It's a shame because I think that next season he would have gone on to bag 15 goals or so.
Sniffer-Clarke Posted 21 June 2009 Posted 21 June 2009 According to the Swindon website he does not fancy living in leicester/shire

Sniffer-Clarke Posted 21 June 2009 Posted 21 June 2009 just had a look on there and there is no mention of a Cox interview on there So sorry it is Vital swindon town fc not there website.
Corky Posted 21 June 2009 Posted 21 June 2009 The reason we were interested was because he showed real quality last season in a poor team, is young and looks a good prospect.
Jimmy Posted 21 June 2009 Posted 21 June 2009 So sorry it is Vital swindon town fc not there website. Vital football is only slightly more reliable then football rumours
Daggers Posted 21 June 2009 Posted 21 June 2009 The Forest fans had it correct before they were banned and deleted - we love Cox.
MC Prussian Posted 21 June 2009 Posted 21 June 2009 "Cox" and "obsession" - a combination of really bad terms that ruins it for me, really. Can't we give that Simon another name? Simon Postlethwaite or something? Simon Simon On The Wall? Simon Says? Simon Paul?
