Leicester City fans' fears over future of Matty Fryatt

Fans' leader Cliff Ginnetta fears Leicester City striker Matty Fryatt will be a major target for Premier League clubs in the next transfer window.

Ginnetta, chairman of the official City Supporters Club, expects Fryatt to continue his hot streak of scoring form.

But he admitted: "I'm fearful we might lose him in January and I'm sure Premier League clubs are looking at him now.

"The likes of Bolton, Wigan and Hull look like they will be short of goals and, by then, they may be desperate to bring in a goalscorer such as Matty."

Hull were reported to be interested in Fryatt, right, during the last transfer window.

Ginnetta says the club would have to think seriously if they received a bid of £4-6million for the 23-year-old striker, who has scored eight goals in 10 games and five in his last three appearances.

Last season, he bagged 32 goals in all competitions as City regained their Championship place at the first attempt.

"Matty's happy at Leicester now and he's proving his doubters wrong," said Ginnetta.

Lance Tomlyn, of the Independent Supporters Association, says a "natural goalscorer" such as Fryatt will always attract attention from higher clubs.

He said: "It's always a worry but I would rather have good players that bigger clubs are interested in than players no-one wants.

"He might miss four or five chances, but he gets four or five goals so that 50 per cent ratio will put him up there among the top half of scorers in the division."

If City did sell Fryatt, Tomlyn also backs the judgment of manager Nigel Pearson to find a ready-made replacement.

He said: "I'm sure Nigel would use the money wisely and his record of signing players is a good one."

Matt Davis, of the Foxes Trust, believes Fryatt would be better off staying where he is – even if the Premier League come calling.

He said: "Everyone has their price, ultimately, but he is bedded in here and scoring for fun.

"I don't think he thrives in the environment of a struggling side and that could be the case if he moved on to a lowly Premier League club."

Fryatt has also become the first City player since Steve Walsh in the 1990s to pass the 50-goal barrier.

And he has earned praise from Walsh, who joked: "It took me 35 years and he's done it in three!

"I've always been a fan of Fryatt and he's really showing his class now.

"He's missed a few chances but he's just carrying on from where he left off last season."

Walsh scored a lot of his City goals during his hugely successful spell as a converted striker, with 15 in the bag at the end of the 1992-93 season.

Midfielder Gary McAllister (53 goals in 225 appearances) also achieved the landmark, but the last striker to pass 50 was Alan Smith, who notched 84 goals in 217 appearances.

Fryatt will be looking to continue his goal-rush against Preston tomorrow.

He said: "It's gone well so far but it's early days for me.

"I want this scoring form to continue but I need to do the business week in, week out."

Walshy saying it took him 35 years to score 50 and Fryatt did it in 3, not quite right is it Steve? Think it through :D

Complete non story, and the reason why the Mercury sometimes does my head in (I know it does some of your heads in ALL the time)

Ok, I realise it's all about getting people to buy the paper, but sorry, if you haven't got anything worth saying, don't publish anything.

I remember in the summer a story they published from a psychologist at Lougbrough Uni saying how we should have the 'mentality' to stay up. What a load of pish.

There was no need for this, i'm not worrying about Fryatt's future, and I don't believe anyone else is sitting there thinking 'oooh, what if some mediocre premier league team pays through the nose for Matty'

The Leicester Mercury should keep to stories that are actually of note and worth publishing, when it goes quiet for a couple of days, don't go to people who are the proclaimed 'god' of Leicester fans, and asking them their opinion on a subject which NO-ONE has been talking about.

Surely the title of the story should be either,

"Leicester City fans' LEADER has some fears over future of Matty Fryatt"

or

"Fears over future of Matty Fryatt expressed by one man"

Its still September FFS, by the time January comes around (hopefully this does not happen) Fryatt could be on a goal drought or injured. No one will want to buy him then, so lets concentrate on the present going ons and forget about a rumour that has been made up by some bullsh**ting tabloid like the Sun or the Daily Star.

The Mercury can write about stuff like this in January IF a legitimate bid is made by a club.

I just want to congratulate everyone who posted in this thread that we took the post count past the ten mark. We have now lost banal status

Shock, horror Papers write stories based on fook all.

If you have nothing worth saying then don't publish it!

Erm, have none of you ever read a paper before?

Most newspaper stories are based on conjecture and not relevant fact.

Surely you have other things to get outraged about?

Take a chill pill or something like that.

so long as Pearson got a decent amount to replace him I can't see him kicking off too much
