Max Gradel

Max is blatantly gonna do a smaller version of DJ Campbell and tell us in more subtle ways thathe wants to stay at Leeds rather than come back here in a month's time.

Maxi is just being 'professional'. Making all the right noises to the media, 'bigging up' (I believe that is the current phrase) his current employer and polishing his own image.

If Pearson recalled him and told him he was starting on monday he would be back like a shot........:fc:

Whilst he does have potential and it's a shame he can't get some pitch time here, it does seem like the fact he actually wasn't very good for massive chunks of last year have been forgotten.

yes hopefully we are going to get someone in who hasn't played at all in that time :) that should be an improvement

Very true, but the kid has bags of potential, he has something the rest of the side don't and that is abit of magic and trickery, the ability to bet the last man. Although he fails in delivering the final killer ball, and can frustrate, he's a nightmare for defenders!!

In his defense I would suggest that he was poorly used by NP last season. He was required to work up and down the right flank with his defensive duties paramount and as such was little better or worse than anyone who has played that role in recent times. Maxi is an attacking player and was never given the freedom to play the kind of role we saw him excel at the other night.

Predictable is my middle name......

(Additional predictable comment)

We have several exciting attacking players at our club who, I feel, are being held back by Pearson's innate conservatism.

(Or)

Get the players playing in their best position.

(Or)

Playing 4-4-2 with 2 men wide and 2 men up leaves us exposed and likely to be over run in central midfield.

The last one is a particular favourite of mine, I have it permanently stored in 'cut and paste'.

He didn't play at all for massive chunks of last season, or this. It's taken Gallagher 10 appearances to deliver his first game of any great influence and now he's everyone's hero.

How many indifferent games has Neilson had in his career here so far. Or N'Guessan. Or Oakley just lately and in our relegation season.

There's one attitute for Academy graduates at this club and quite another for imported so-called stars. Especially when they first get into the team.

People even saw McGivern as having a decent game Tuesday for no other reaosn I could see than it was his debut. I was just as keen to see him do well - we all know how much we need fast, attacking full-backs here and have done for years. But he was inconsistent. Some good, some bad. No way did he have a particularly good game any moe than Neilson.

Oakley has as cushioned a ride here as anyone I've known apart from Stephen Hughes and Patrick Kisnorbo. He can have a succession of ordinary matches but still get selected. For Gradel, King and Porter before them, if they had/have one below par game there are people on their backs.

I'd completely agree that they are indifferent as Gradel. The difference is that had they gone out on loan people wouldn't be acting like we've just lost Ronaldo. Which is what people are doing now, without the performances to back it up... so yes, i'd say there is one rule for academy players and one rule for anyone else.

I agree with this, I thought that McGivern was very average and when he played one of various long aimless balls from the back they were high and hanging and not very direct. However I am hoping this was nerves and will slowly improve.

In terms of Gradel (and King) I agree they seem to be treated very differently to Oakley. The reality for me is that Wellens and King would be my preferred centre midfield (IMO). But if that happens Oakley is put on the right and N'Guessan and Gradel are pushed out. If they play N'Guessan (or God forbid Gradel, King is pushed out to fit in Oakley). It appears that Oakley is indeed untouchable.

Then when Oakley plays on the right he gets a 'free role' (undoubtedly to soften him up to the idea) yet when anyone else plays right mid they have to play a disciplined rigid right midfield role!

To summarise, someone on here said a few months back (I can't remember who) that if Gradel was given the free role afforded Oakley on the right he would be awsome. He could float about finding hole and making something happen. Why does this never happen or why has it never been tried?

Pearson delight with Gradel loan

_46576918_maxg226_getty.jpg Gradel came off the bench to make his Leeds debut against Norwich Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson is in no doubt winger Max Gradel's one-month loan move to League One leaders Leeds United will benefit everyone involved.

Pearson told BBC Radio Leicester: "It's great for Max and for us.

"Our squad has a lot more depth than it has had for a while so Max's first-team opportunities have been a bit limited.

"Now he will get the chance to be around the first team and it means that if after a month he is needed, he comes back with a bit of experience."

And Pearson is in no doubt that Gradel, 21, is the sort of character who will make the most of his loan stint.

"He will take a lot of enthusiasm there and has a lot ability," Pearson added.

Gradel was a regular part of the Foxes squad that earned promotion by winning League One last term but has only made one appearance this season.

What people are saying, or at least this person is saying, is that it's shameful that we cannot make use of a player who does create a ripple of excitement when he gets the ball and does try to make things happen when we have to sit through the sort of bore draw we had against Derby and the first half drudgery against Palace, to mention just two of our poor quality efforts at entertainment this season.

As for Oakley, Neilson and N'Guessan (whenever he's been on the wing) they've been about as exciting to watch as City's half-time matchday offerings.

If that's the best he can come up with I'd rather he didn't bother.

Gradel's opportunities were limited not because the squad has more depth in terms of right wing ability but because the manager preferred to play N'Guessan, who's never yet looked good on the wing, Oakley because the central midfield slots were taken or because he wanted three in central midfield, Gallagher because, like Oakley, he wanted him acommodated somewhere, or no right winger at all.

Basically Gradel was the most expendable especially being junior to established players and on a long contract.

Seems to me that City hope he'll improve his value at Leeds with a view to selling him on for a nice, fat, fee like Mattock while, meanwhile, relying on the "experience" Pearson mentions to hopefully win us promotion whatever the kind of football we produce.

Me, I watch games because I like to see entertaining football with people scoring goals and trying to score some more.

Watford apart, and Palace second half, our commitment and success in that direction has been severely limited.

Yet ironically, on the few occasions we do introduce some pace, movement and skill, we seem to get goals and look half decent. But we do it so sparingly that it's as if Pearson doesn't really believe in it at all.

N'Guessan, who's never yet looked good on the wing

He did for us against Swansea, exactly what Gradel did for Leeds against Norwich. So one performance in 10 is about on par with Gradel.

Lays the Thracian bait and awaits rant.

Yo be fair he looked quite decent for a few games, playing well forward and even did well deputising for the injured Howard as the 'out ball', despite playing on the right.

But as is the case with all our wide players he was required to track back deeper and deeper with the result that his attacking threat dissipated. Eventually he was dropped for Gallagher who was equally ineffective, then for Oakley / no-one!

Gradel managed 7 assists and two goals in 19 starts for us last season - by no means an insignificant contribution for the limited time he played.

Hasn't D-bomb already scored 3 in less games... in a higher league?

I thought you'd say that but at least two of N'Guessan's goals came from the centre-forward position. If, as I forlornly suggested many times, Gradel had been given a roving role and, in particular more time coming off the left flank, then, just like Gallagher, he would have been far more effective. But people don't listen, do they? :D

Doesn't seem like Max will be getting involved with the first team this season at all then, regardless of how well he does. If that is the case, I hope the deal can be extended longer than the original month.

No doubt the lad has talent and it would be a shame for him not to make the most of this season, regardless of where he is. However, I still think it's important that he is made to feel welcome by the club as he is certainly a promising talent.

You've certainly read that right unless there's a dramatic change in circumstances. Bodes well for Leeeds who have every opportunity to get Gradel to show everyone exactly what he's capable given a bit of freedom, a bit of support and people who are prepared to play to his strengths.
