I think he was linked with Bayern Munich.

He lost his daughter few years ago. He also had a mysterious illness it is said. It all must have affected him severely.

I thought he'd overcome cancer/a bowel illness recently and lost his daughter a few years back... Truly shocking. This news comes out of nowhere.

Tragic. I especially feel for his wife and the remaining kid.:(

Some snippets of a translation:

Over the circumstances of its death first no official data were present. The first realizations point to a suicide. This communicated the police on Tuesday evening

It had returned from the meeting of the German football league (DFL), on which it wanted to tilt the 50+1 regulation, and got at the airport the shocking call.

This communicated the police on Tuesday evening. It is seized against 18:25 clock at a railroad overpass with Neustadt Eilvese of a course and mortally injured

I do not know, why it ist" and as happened; , child said. The 96-Chef is surely, " itself; that it anything with football to do does not hat". Child: " It was labil" Enke had missed four international matches because of an illness, which was indicated as bacteria infection of the intestine. It had been invited also not for the two international matches against Chile and the Ivory Coast to 14. and 18 November. Löw had signaled to the Hannoveraner however clearly that it was a far favorite on the number one with the world championship 2010 in South Africa. Goalkeeper Enke denied eight international matches

The married football professional and its wife had lost its daughter Lara at the age of two years three years ago, which suffered from an innate heart error and died in the hospital. The German football federation (DFB) experienced only immediately after the return of first training to Bonn of the disaster.

By the way 'child' is translated from German to English as Hannover's club president's name

That really is awful news, the poor bloke had such a hard time of it over the past few years. Really feel for him and his family.

RIP. :(

Really sad. :(

Heard a German journalist talking about it earlier. Apparently his daughter died two years ago and never really recovered from the loss either as a person or in his professional capacity. RIP and condolences to his wife and their adopted daughter.

Hmm... 'Apparent' sucide because of a bereavement three years ago eh? Adopted a baby girl just eight months ago and was first team choice for Hannover '96 and Deutschland. And national coach didn't know about his psychiatric problems.

Doesn't quite ring true. Maybe something else lies at the root of this:

For all we know, Enke might have nothing to with any of that :dunno:

Nobody knows what was going through his head last night. Grief can display itself in many guises and sometimes not even surface at all for years, I don't think it's right to be casting aspersions about a guy who's just died.

...because the dead have no defence. My sentiments as well. But there are plenty of others (no doubt at Hannover '96) that are alive and kicking who also have no defence because they were involved.

And, who knows, but it seems they may have been involved in more than match fixing...

Terribly sad.... losing a child must be totally heartbreaking and he was suffering from depression - Think the conspiracy theories are a bit unnecessary at this time.

Fucking ashamed of a lot of you. There's a good reason I usually hate these RIP threads, often descends to farce. If you've nothing to say in tribute then just don't say anything at all. A man's died and some of you are still using it as a pissing contest and I'm not just pointing the finger at RC.

I don't really want to see another misinformed post about depression or another keyboard warrior telling the offender to get bent or I'll just be forced to close the thread which would ultimately be worse.

Pay your respects or go troll another thread.

Thoughts with what's left of the man's family, absolutely gutting and a loss of a fantastic footballer.

Just reading the book "A Life Too Short : The Tragedy of Robert Enke"

My link

A really good read - certainly makes you realise the "human" side of footballers. The best "football" book I've read in a long time, even if the translation from German is a bit iffy in places.

This guy was tormented for years by his own judgement on himself whenever he conceded a goal. Endured a torrid time at Barcelona - in his only game for the club he "had a mare" as they got knocked out the Cup and was shabbily treated by the club's management. I challenge anyone to read the section dealing with the birth and death of his daughter Lara without shedding a tear.

And you get get in on Kindle for about a fiver - you know what to do.
