Posted 15 February 2010 Posted 15 February 2010 It's a pretty trivial issue because it's not going to happen, but I've been having a debate this week about whether or not as a fan of Leicester you'd rather see us get promoted back to the Premiership via the playoffs or win the FA Cup final? Both at Wembley, but both completely different outcomes. Play-offs - Gaining entry right back to the "Promised Land", with the opportunity to build further. No guarantees of survival. FA Cup - To break the duck and claim our first ever FA Cup at the fifth time of asking. A place in Europe for the next season with the legacy of the victory to go with it. Obviously this is a completely hypothetical argument but I'm genuinely interested as to what people think about this. For me personally one of my life ambitions is go see us win the play-off final - I know it's a day I'd never forget. I was too young for '96 and prior to that, so I guess this argument is quite age-dependent also. I have a feeling I know what the general consensus will be but I'm putting it out there anyway...

lou Posted 15 February 2010 Posted 15 February 2010 Having already experienced a play off final it would have to be the FA Cup - what an acheivement that would be for a club our size! Cant see it ever happening though sadly.

davieG Posted 15 February 2010 Posted 15 February 2010 Having been a fan when they've failed to win it in '61, '63, & 69 it's got to be the FA Cup add to that the fact that even jonny come latelies like Cov have won it. 125 years and never won the FA Cup sticks in the craw!

The joys of getting promoted would last approximately four months, at which point we'd realise we'd be in for a season of high ticket prices, having the shit kicked out of us every week, being pissed about by Sky most weeks, fair weather fans coming out of the woodwork for "big" games against Man United/Liverpool etc. Possibly the biggest no-brainer of all time for me. EDIT: Plus we'd all be going on a European tour.
StanSP Posted 15 February 2010 Posted 15 February 2010 FA Cup all the way. Would be a unique opportunity for every single City fan. Already had promotion (obviously not saying I wouldn't take it again), but FA Cup seems more prestigious due to the history of it.

MPH Posted 15 February 2010 Posted 15 February 2010 Definately the play offs. i would rather get out of this division and stand a chance of playing in the prem. it would give us a sustained chance of watching better quality football over a longer period of time AND also give us an increased chance of winning the FA cup in future years as we would have the better players. its a no brainer, really.

It would give you a' chance of sustained' Premier Football but is more likely to result in, at best a few years skirting with relegation and once the inevitable relegation comes, and it will the play-off win and the time spent there will soon be forgotten. Where as winning the cup would be a life time memory with the bonus of a stint in Europe which would be very, very distant dream to achieve as part of a moderately successful Premier Team. Not only that we'd need new owners because Mandaric has already shown with Portsmouth he isn't rich enough.

Mind you, if the Devil offered me a deal: 'You'll never win the cup but I'll erase the fact you spent a season in Div 1'. I would have to think about that. I was dead chuffed we were one of only eight not to play outside the top two divs. Thats despite how successful we were last season.

Not negative realistic, there's very little kudos in being a yoyo Premier team, if we go up great but there's no real prospect of staying there in a manner where you could anticipate winning many games and based where on current financial happenings are more likely to create a situation where subsequent relegation is could bring about administration. Besides my main thoughts regarding this is having supported this club through good times and bad. Premier League, League Cups etc for 50 years we've never won either of the top two domestic trophies, even you must admit we've got no chance of winning the top league so winning the FA Cup would be a thrill that is more achievable and would satisfy a life time wish and provide a sustained memory that a trumped up play-off final could never equal..

Hmmm, difficult..

We wouldn't be immortalised in footballing history for getting promoted to the Prem. We wouldn't be remembered. But if the playoff final involves a 3-0 down at half time to Forest, then a 4-3 win with 4 late goals in the last 10 minutes then it would be that.
