England's 23 Man Squad

Issue here though is that we won't be facing teams like Belarus, Kazakhstan and Andorra in the WC. The top sides will suss us out.. if we're relying on Heskey to win us the WC then ohmygoodgod.

you can suss out what your opponents will do but that doesn't mean you can prevent it happening.

Heskey may not score many but his ability to hold the ball up and draw defenders to him gives the more talented players (Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard) room to work in.

Now the way to prevent that space is to avoid having defenders drwn to him - just stick the one centre back on him but Heskey has the power to shrug him off and get away meaning more defenders have to come over and cover thus the space appears once more.

With Heskey we have a chance.

Without Heskey we don't.

I find it hard to believe people can still doubt his contributions.

G'WON EMILE BRING IT HOME.

Adam Johnson left out, but both Carrick and Wright-Phillips are in? Cosmic.

Doesn't matter anyway, we'll not do anything.

Walcott is gash, good call Fabio.

Shame Upson's near the team, Wright-Phillips too really, would've rather seen Adam Johnson and Dawson taken, as would most I'm sure.

Pleased Joe Cole and Heskey are in the squad no end.

How dare you?

Really, in all truth. He doesn't score many goals but his contribution is great. He holds it up better than Crouch.

Agree with that.

No 100% sure this is correct  But I grabbed it from another forum:-

Rooney scored 9 in 10 along side Heskey.

Rooney scored 2 in 10 without Heskey.

Although I probably wouldn't have picked SWP, why so much love for Adam Johnson? 1 goal that may or may not have been a cross in 16 games for Man City and suddenly he's everyone's choice for a WC berth. I like him as a player and he definitely should have been given longer against Mexico and Japan, but he's hardly worth his spot, yet. He's a shoo-in for 2012 and 2014 though.

He's exciting, good close ball control, good crossing, has some physical presence, in form. Plus he's our only left-footed winger in the 30. If I wanted someone to come off the bench to try and spark us and change the game then I'd rather have Johnson on than SWP or Milner. SWP is not in form and not that good anyway, and Milner is more of a solid, workhorse to bring on when perhaps we need fresh legs to conserve a lead or something. All I'm saying is that Johnson offers variety, a different option.

Id of taken Theo Walcott and SWP. Although Walcott for some reason gets played as a winger, he always looks better upfront because hes a striker when all said and done.

when does Walcott ever play up front? i'm not a SWP fan but he's generally done well for England under Capello so perhaps merrited. I'd have taken Walcott just for his pace, but he's an average football player.

That's what I want to know. When he was playing brilliant for Boro early this season nobody mentioned him for England. As soon as he goes to Man City and scores that goal he MUST be in.

Odd.

Ashley Young didnt do much last season did he?

Him n Agbonlahor are stupidly overrated and rightfully werent anywhere near the squad.

Not saying Young is not hyped up a bit but we are weak down the left and would have been good to have him as backup.

agree with that. Young had a pretty poor season compared to last. cant ever see Agbonlahor making it as an England regular.

I don't know why Johnson should be included either, like C-Man has said 1 goal in 16 games in the Premier League doesnt justify going for me, especially over Wright-Phillips who has got 31 caps to his name and has performed in his last two games for England I think, created 2 of Crouch's goals against Egypt and was decent when he came on against Japan.

Adam Johnson and Theo Walcott are young lads, they are going to have so many more chances for England, just think Walcott would of been a good option for us off the bench with his pace.
