England v Algeria - Frid - ITV - 7.30

Rooney is an arsehole, maybe there is alot of pressure and maybe there is too much expectation but fook me, that was Algeria in front of them and it isn't the fact we drew to be honest, it's the way in which we drew, it was pathetic. Saying that, as shit as he has been, we cannot afford to drop him because if he does decide to finally start performing, he will get us through.

Anyone can harp on here about Heskey being the best performer so far etc. I said before the tournament he won't do anything, he isn't good enough and you all said, 'he lets everyone else play' etc, well I would actually say his inclusion is stopping us play. If we had a five man midfield with Gerrard behind Rooney, we'd play much better football. Heskey offers us nothing going forward, not at international level, he is garbage.

Joe Cole needs to be out on the left, I've no idea what he has done wrong to be behind the laughable SWP. I'd stick Lennon on the right, Lampard and Barry in the middle. We might start seeing more from the likes of Gerrard and Lampard who usually play a five man midfield system for their clubs. We are losing possession far too easily and getting out numbered by the likes of USA and Algeria in midfield, God help us if we did get through, I'd be afraid of playing the likes of Uruguay and Mexico right now, let alone the Germans and Spanish.

It is a shame Carragher is out on Wednesday, I doubted his ability to perform in a World Cup but he did pretty good last night.

Going to be a horrible wait for Wednesday now, Capello needs to earn his money, be brave and change the team around.

Rooney is way off the pace, whether he is burned out or simply not fit I have no idea, Lampard's limp performances put him in the same boat. If we had any worthwhile alternatives he (they) should be dropped but we don't so we are stuck with them both.

Heskey is playing pretty well despite his obvious limitations but his role in the side is to bring the best out of Rooney and that is simply not happening. Playing Gerrard off Rooney is currently 'the peoples choice' and although my personal view is that it is an awful idea, I think we might see it on Wednesday as we have so few viable options.

Worrying about the composition of the midfield is at this stage largely an excercise in deckchair reorganisation. We need to find a way to generate some confidence and belief, whether that is possible with the jaded bunch of losers we have at our disposal is open to question.

He's injured. There was a point around 70 minutes when he grimaced and then did no running at all.

He admitted in one of the pre-match interviews, he came back too quick for his injury and it was no surprise that he missed the first day of training after the US match.

Shit performance.

Defence was untroubled. Gerrard was our best performer other than the defence imo.

Gerrard was wank.

Ashley Cole was about the best of a woeful bunch.

I can't understand why we don't play a 4-3-3 when the bulk of our players come from Man U, Chelsea and Liverpool, all three of which play a variation of that formation.

Last night, all the players looked unimaginative and unable to control or pass a ball. They looked devoid of ideas and could not keep the ball. I thought Gerrard, Lampard, Lennon, Rooney were all awful. The fact that Capello seemed unable to work out what to do is perhaps the most worrying.

Rooney was a tit and I hope he reflects this morning that the fans attending have spent thousands getting there to support the team. To him, a couple of thousand may not be a lot anymore, but to those fans, it is and all they wanted in return for their support was some efforts and the basics of being able to control the ball and pass it. The fact that their keeper only really had one save to make speaks volumes (I don't count fluffed shots as a save).

Joe Cole has to come into the side (although that was evident midway through the US game). Sadly, as I like Emile, I'd probably drop him for Cole to play on the left, with Wright-Phillips replacing Lennon so that we can keep some pace in the team.

So why the hell is he playing...:dunno:

So we can watch the sun shining out of his arse?

I can't stop reading newspapers, listening to pundits and phone-ins, reading message boards and forums and everyone seems as confused as the next person. What is going on?

Wasn't this supposed to be the last chance for our 'golden generation  ' to finally reach their 'potential.' We were supposed to finally have a coach with the credentials to lead us and equip us properly to show the world what we can do. Wasn't this supposed to be our best chance since Italia '90?

It is an utter shambles. France came with zero expectations, the fans, press, players all hate Domenech, they were expected to go out on a whimper but not us... I think we honestly looked worse than the French last night. The players don't look interested, they look clueless, Capello looks out of ideas and half the team can't do the basics.

I don't know where to lie the blame. Capello? Is it his fault for his team selections? Is it his fault for not picking his keeper pre-tournament? Is it his fault for this two hour before kick off team selection? Has the strict regime gone too far?

Is it us as a country? Do we expect too much? Do we overrate our players? Do we put too much pressure on the team?

Is it the players? They're clearly under performing. Am I the only one who thinks there is some serious player unrest in the dressing room?

Alot of questions to be answered and Capello has some serious work to do between now and Wednesday and then after that should we get through.

How has it come down to us being worried about beating fucking Slovenia?! Wednesday can't come quick enough..

All the right questions Tilly, now just give us a few answers...

In reality at this moment in time there is only one question that matters.

Can Capello select, prepare and motivate a starting XI from his squad to beat Slovenia on Wednesday?

Looking at the players he has available the answer has to be yes...

Until you remember the wretched performance of (supposedly) from our best players over the last two games...:frusty:

...and in answer toTilley: Yes.

England has an over-inflated opinion of its' national side, fed by jingoistic recollections of war and Empire. Media fight to fill column inches with saleable copy and so they over-pump expectations, relying on the public's football ignorance of other national sides.

T'was ever thus, albeit tamed down - and only those of us of a certain age now have the ambivalence to shrug off these tournaments and cup pretensions.

The expectation of glory is idiotic when looking at how the nation performs in competitions. Only Italia 90 and Euro 86 had glmpses of a winning side, and even then not in every game.

I feel pity for the over-reactions of horror and sadness that greets these matches in pubs across the land. Pity for the rank ignorance.

I'm enjoying watching matches and will enjoy them all the more once England are out. I'm sick of seeing red pug faces contorted in frustration and sweat - as if the headless chicken approach could ever succeed.

I'm sick of seeing and hearing the Four Four Boo. Fvck off England and let some team which plays with pride take your place, (which is any two of the other three).

Personally i think this whole "oh we are overhyped by the media and fans, we are just a mediocre bunch of players" is a load of bollocks, that team last night was largely made up of Champions League winners or finalists....that simply isn't an excuse when you look at the CV's of the teams we've played so far....

And as someone who has lived abroad in other "big nations" for quite a long time, if you think their medias and support are any different to ours, you haven't got a clue.

Funny how Capello's English suddenly deteriorates now we're playing shit. At the end of the qualifiers and in the build up to this world cup his English was clear as a bell.

Weren't you speechless at how shit England were!!

Since when did Gerrard, Rooney and Lampard forget how to control or pass the ball. Not amount of "being out of position" or "Heskey was on the pitch" can excuse that!

Wasn't necessarily talking about him being speechless, more about him needing a translator, which apparently caused quite a stir in the media room.

Agree to a certain extent, they do back their team and want them to do well but they dont seem to over estimate their chances as much as we do. When you think we havent even made a final for 40+ years and didnt even qualify for Euro 2008 but still the press believe we can win the World cup it makes no sense. Sure the press in spain, italy, and brazil hype their players and expect results but they have won major tournaments recently.

As far as the players being mediocre that depends on who you compare them too, if I had to pick my best WC team from all the national sides I'm not sure I'd have one england player in the starting 11. So in some respects they are overrated just, because they have success in the CL means little especially when you consider the english players having top foreign international players with them.

Most of them deserve a good booing and even dropping after that performance. I can pass/control the ball better than alot of the crap I had to endure on Friday night. I can even pass better in bare feet on the park in long grass while I'm trying to dodge dog shit. Most of them deserve no respect at all in my opinion.

I'd rather have 11 English fringe Prem players or Championship/League 1 players out there than most of these fancy dan's. I'd take the shirt off most of them and let them go and enjoy their summers in Dubai or wherever they fancy.

No disrespect to Algeria though cos they played pretty well and easily deserved their point.
