What is there to do in Leicester?

Recommended Posts

I grew up in Leicester and have always followed City's results.

However, for the last 20 odd years (most of my working life) I have lived in Hertfordshire - drawn there by my career.

Anyway having a young 7 year old son I was thinking about what to do at the next half term. I am thinking about a short break in Leicester. I have managed to convert my son into a City supporter (despite the best efforts of his school pals who all follow Arsenal/Spurs). So my son is expecting great things of the Leicester trip. Sadly there is no home game on that week but I thought about the Tour of the Walkers stadium offered by the club (1 hour on a Saturday morning) - has anyone done this and is it any good ?

Other things we will probably do :-

- The Space Center

- Fish & Chips at Grimsby Fisheries Welford Road

- An Indian Meal on the Melton Road (any suggestions for the best restaurant? - I am out of touch)

- Trip on the Great Central Line Railway

- Walk on the Sunday at Bradgate Park

...any other suggestions on things to do in Leicester?

Personally think the Space Centre's way overpriced for what it is but a 7 year old should probably enjoy it.

Bobby's on Belgrave Road is Leicester's best Indian restaurant but the vegetarian food there might not fit with a little un's tastes... depends on his level of food experimentation! Tbh any of the Belgrave Road ones will be good, and there are also a few really good places on London Road just up from the train station ("The Curry House" is my personal recommendation there).

The tour of the Walkers seems pretty good value and I'm tempted to go myself, I can't imagine a lot can go wrong with it as long as you get to see the usual bits like changing rooms, tunnel, pitchside etc

Also go to Abbey Pumping Station near the Space Centre, it's free and really interesting with lots of fun bits and pieces to keep a 7 year old interested.

A tour of the Walkers is OK but if you have been on stadium tours before you will find its no different, just a different colour. Maybe I have done it too many times.

Apart from that I totally agree with lcfcadam. Curry = Belgrave Road, Space Centre overpriced but they may have a theme for half term such as Star Wars or Dr Who which helps, the Pump Station is good and free.

Grimsby Fisheries has gone down hill a bit IMO and now lives of past glories.

That hercules art thing puts me off me dinner there. Very greasy food there. Won't go again

Thanks for all the input guys.

Not too worried about the expense of the Space Center as we have Tesco vouchers to get in for free (but I agree normally I would consider it over priced).

Shame about Grimsby Fisheries - the chippy on Queens Road used to be OK but Grimsby Fisheries took a lot of beating back in the 80s.

Keep the suggestions coming please.....

Taraj Palace in syston (if its still there) is also a nice'un.

I agree but I think we're in a minority.

If you want an Indian on the Melton Rd (Leicester) Ashoka is good and reasonably priced.

Twinlakes mate, It's a theme park in Melton Mowbray suitable for your lads age. They have animals there aswell as loads of rides, and theres a huge indoor play area. (I sound like an excited kid again)

Bradgate parks probably my favourite place in Leicester. Sounds boring I know, just love going up there lol (Always remember when we saw Gerry Taggart jogging up there)

You should get yourself down to Birstall Fisheries mate. Bit out of town fair enough but they do cracking cod and chips.

While you're there you could do some local sightseeing like shopping in Somerfield and Crazy Prices, School Lane park, Birstall Cemetery and the public toilets on Stonehill Avenue where all the heroin addicts used to shoot up.

Great day out and away from all the tourists.

You make it sound so idyllic. Ever considered a career in tourism promotions?! :P

Leicester is pretty poor for curry houses etc, i've been to majority in the city and there all very similar.............I would give them a miss!!

Your kid might like the Space centre, you could take him bowling or pictures or something. Unfortunately, not too much to do!

They're really not - love going to a new restaurant in Leicester because you're never quite sure what you're going to get on the menu.

Might not compare to London or Birmingham but pisses on most other cities
