davieG Posted 19 October 2010 Posted 19 October 2010 From the Merc Leicester City were set to complete the signing of former Manchester City and England striker Darius Vassell last night. Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has also admitted an interest in Blackburn Rovers striker Jason Roberts and West Bromwich Albion forward Ishmael Miller. Vassell underwent his medical and was putting the finishing touches to his two-year contract with City. But Eriksson, who frequently picked the 30-year-old free agent for his squads when he was England manager, said it could be two weeks before the striker was ready for action. Vassell, who came through the ranks at Aston Villa before joining Manchester City for £2million five years ago, has been without a club since leaving Turkish side Ankaragucu in May and is not match-fit. However, Eriksson believes Vassell, who has scored six goals for England from 22 appearances, still has plenty to offer. "The deal will take hours and not days," said Eriksson. "Darius is not fit to play on Saturday. It will take hopefully two weeks to get him fit. "He will bring pace and experience, and can score goals. "He has been at this level and higher up for many, many years. "He is only 30 so he should be able to play for some years. He was in the England squad many times, so he will be good for us." Eriksson said Roberts, who cannot break into the Rovers side, and Miller, who needs games after returning from injury, were also possible loan targets, but said he had a long list of potential new signings after being inundated by calls from agents. Eriksson has also been linked with loan moves for Arsenal midfielder Craig Eastwood, Fulham striker David Elm and Nottingham Forest defender Brendan Moloney, as well as players abroad. "I have a list of about 50 names, and I have agents calling all the time," said Eriksson. "It is always like that. "They call me and say 'hello my friend'. I haven't spoken to them since I left Manchester City years ago, so I don't know how good friends they are, but it is good. "He (Roberts) is one of the names on the list, but it will not be done today. "All the players we have mentioned are good players with experience. They have a lot of pace as well. "If you want to raise the quality you have to bring in more players, but the base will always be the players who have been here before. "If we take in players, I want those players to give us something extra, and the two we brought in last week (Kyle Naughton and Curtis Davies) were very good on Saturday."
Fox 4 Life Posted 19 October 2010 Posted 19 October 2010 FIFTY names?! Wow he isn't messing about is he. Not so sure that a huge influx of short term loans is the way to go, could cause havoc with the current squad morale....

To be fair, he's had a few years to spend scouting for players whilst being with England, Manchester City and Notts County.
foxoffderby Posted 19 October 2010 Posted 19 October 2010 I love being a LCFC fan. Under Pearson I thought it was good as we were linked to so many players, Steve Walsh must take a lot of credit for that. But now under SGE having just read he has been offered over 50 targets by agents is amazing. The first thing I do after having a cuppa in the mornings is to logon to Foxes Talk to see who we have been linked with this morning loving it at the moment. I think we will shortley be entering a golden period in our history similar to the MON days Sven really does have the magic touch. I know for a fact loads of Derby fans are looking over at us and wish they had Sven as manager.
StanSP Posted 19 October 2010 Posted 19 October 2010 I love the bit about how good the 'friends' are. I'm quite encouraged by this though, especially the thought of Ishmael Miller too. In Sven we trust!!

Mind you, worked with Elano and Petrov

Not so sure that a huge influx of short term loans is the way to go, could cause havoc with the current squad morale.... I don't think Sven gives a tuppeny fook about the current squad. By the end of January it may be that only Hobbs, King & Waghorn are still playing. And I can't imagine that he's been particularly impressed with Waghorn so far. Goalies 2 are shit and Weale could be improved upon Berner Slow Wellens Hit & Miss Oakley As above Dyer As Above King In and out of games N'Guessan Should be shot Fryatt Hit & miss Waghorn As above Howard As above
Leicester_Loyal Posted 19 October 2010 Posted 19 October 2010 To be fair hardly any of our current squad would cut it in the Prem, and that is what Sven is aiming for.
Fox 4 Life Posted 19 October 2010 Posted 19 October 2010 I totally agree that our squad could be improved on I just mean if all these names are loans that is what would worry me. If we are talking about targets for January then fair play but a squad full of loans is a very risky approach long term.

Unfortunately due to the transfer window, loans is all we can get till Jan, there are areas that need improving right now. Hopefully if they impress we will sign them on permanent deals or extend their loans till end of season.

If we are talking about targets for January then fair play but a squad full of loans is a very risky approach long term. The point here is that Sven is trying to improve the quality of the current squad as quickly as possible so that we aren't that far adrift come january that we cant attract any new talent. Clearly he is hamstrung by the fact that the transfer market is closed and as such he has no choice BUT to approach the loan market. IMO, if we are bringing in the quality of players on short term loans such as Naughton, Davies et al, then the January transfer window becomes exciting. Espcially if we have managed to haul overselves within touching distance of the play offs. Lets be honest, we would struggle to attract strong players in January to the club if we had absolutely no prospect of competing for some form of promotion push....They would just join a team further up the table....
Leicester_Loyal Posted 19 October 2010 Posted 19 October 2010 I'd like to see Bobby Charlton in. Him and Pele. Don't think their currently scoring enough goals or playing enough games to be in the target group of 50. Oh wait, Vassell and Roberts are in the 50, so maybe they could be
ellis boyd Posted 19 October 2010 Posted 19 October 2010 My two pence worth: Had a look through some of the registered Prem squads and players not included include: David Healy Kieran Agard Tom Cleverley Oscar Jansson Jay Emmanual-Thomas (I think, but don't quite me on this one) Agard, Healy and Emmanual-Tomas are definately strikers I'd like to see here alongside Waggy, Howard, Fryatt and Droopy Dog (I've always thought Vassel looks like him). Obviously not all 3 and obviously I don't know Sven's list, but interesting individuals that could do a Championship job with ease I'm sure. I'm struggling to see a right winger anywhere though.
Wymsey Posted 19 October 2010 Posted 19 October 2010 Am i the only one on here who doesn't think Waghorn is worth £3 million? He just seems out of touch at the moment and making dodgy decisions with the ball. We need two powerful strikers - quickly.
MrSpaM Posted 19 October 2010 Posted 19 October 2010 Love to see Cleverly back at the walkers again, think he'll be breaking into the man u squad next season tho Think he'd be top of my list if he was available though
MC Prussian Posted 19 October 2010 Posted 19 October 2010 We definitely need a central midfielder with a no-nonsense, attacking touch. Someone who can mess with the centre-backs and win a few free-kicks near the opposing box. I haven't seen a lot of those as of recently. I could probably count them on one hand. King's been too inconsistent so far, Wellens is as threatening going forward as is my left toe. Oakley maybe, but not for a full game.

Agard doesn't have to be included in 25 man squad due to his age Healy is dog poo unless he's wearing a N. Ireland shirt Emmanual-Thomas does not have to be included in the 25 man squad either (but he would be a decent signing as he is very versatile!)

He just seems out of touch at the moment and making dodgy decisions with the ball. We need two powerful strikers - quickly. No you're not. He was the product of a panicky final days transfer dealings and a signing to please the fans. Probably a good signing at around £1.5- £2 million but no more. If we hadnt played hardball over campbell to get the extra dosh I doubt if we would have paid this.
Guest BlueBrett Posted 19 October 2010 Posted 19 October 2010 Sven is such a cool customer! I love it how he has to do fook all and the players just flock to him regardless. I suppose you could interpret it that perhaps some of these agents see him as a bit of a soft touch and they may be able to get their clients into contracts with him having failed elsewhere. I really doubt it though, I think they just recognise that playing under Sven for an aspirational club like Leicester could potentially reinvigorate any faltering career. For me, now that we have Davies and Naughton, we only really need 3 maybe 4 more players (Winger, CM, and One or maybe Two CFs - We need rotation not just the ability to pick a decent starting 11). Should be able to find quality in these areas out of the 50 (and probably rising hourly) he has to choose from. You've got me on the edge of my seat Sven!
