Aylestone Fox Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 Just got in from the game,...we looked comfortable for the most part, they were only looking for Hume's pace in behind. Vitor had his best game for us today, easily Man of Match. Abe and Gallagher kep the ball well in the wide midfield positions, Abe's best game also in my opinion, linked up well for the goal. Wanted to see Waghorn and Fryatt up front together and got to do so, started brightly but seemed to fade not sure if its the lack of fitness thats been mentioned but we need to finish teams like Preston off when we can as they were very poor. All in all though a good day at the office,.....
Guest ttfn Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 Oh, and the refereeing was awful AGAIN. Fryatt should have had a first half penalty and he missed a number of simple fouls for each team.
scott_gunnell Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 3 points and Sven still learning so I would say all good so far for your boys --- Sven fan
Mee Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 Played well today, Vitor looks very comfortable on the ball, and so does Abe. Cunningham and Naughton looked solid again. Good performance from the lads.
reynard Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 I would have taken 1-0 at the start so guess I have to be reasonably pleased. However, we still have a lot of improving to do. Preston were perhaps one of the most limited and unadventurous sides I've seen in a long while. Yet they had two good chances in the first half both gifted to them by poor defending and could have easily pinched a goal at the death. We had a lot of possession and created a quality goal but I don't recall their keeper having to make many saves and our strikers though working hard never looked likely to score. Defensively we were not really truly tested but still looked edgy and nervous at times though on the plus side we look to have two quality footballing full backs and Vitor had a good game. However, if Parkin had been playing I think we may well have lost. I thought Abe had a good game and set up the goal well with a good bit of play. Weale was very poor and a quality keeper looks a must. Some of our play was very inventive and we kept possesion well though we will not be allowed so much time on the ball by better more competitive sides. I also thought we are starting to look fitter and seemed to last longer into the game though we did look tired in the last five minutes. It's all about results at the moment though so a good win but we need to win the next two as well to start climbing away from the drop zone.
The Doctor Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 good, good. Should have scored more/lucky not to concede with weale racing about like a headless chicken. Still a win is a win and we need to push on now. also shit the bed one of my teachers is an ex-city player.
FrankieADZ Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 Also think this would have been another game where Sir Lloyd of Dyer would have had a field day, as there right back/ring winger Billy Jones didnt look up to much at at all.
phillthefox Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 fantastic and i had gallagher 1-0 25/1 result and funny browns miss at end
The Doctor Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 wayne brown getting done for pace by steve howard for brown's booking. might be time to pack it in when that happens
Mee Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 Wtf happened to the Fosse Boys topic? They made a new section for Away games and Fosse boys.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 A win ugly and a clean sheet. All I want now is a goal from a corner please!
Thracian Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 Today was all about getting a win and while I'll accept that I won't be using it as an excuse for much longer. Preston were another rank bad team that any coach should have relished taking apart. But we just negated our own ability, allowed the game to stay in doubt until the final whistle and might so easily have conceded an equaliser at the death which would have served us right. In fact Preston had three great chances to score including Brown's at the end while we worked one good goal and never really committed ourselves to getting in the penalty box at all. And it wasn't just that we're still not fit enough. King put one fabulous ball across the face of goal very early in the game but neither Fryatt nor Waghorn anticipated it or got anywhere near it. A Jimmy Greaves or Tony Cottee would have gobbled it up with glee and a similar ball went to waste second half. And for me Fryatt just made it harder for us because he never seemed to help link the play. He got the ball, kept his head down and tried to wriggle an opening somehow. But Preston had clearly been briefed and neutralised him quite easily. Waghorn was little better and as King is a guy who needs to be running off a more traditional or a footballing striker, then he was predictably starved of service too. For all that we could have passed Preston to a standstill but, yet again, the moment we scored, we went into negativity mode, failed to close down high up the pitch and showed virtually no ambition at all. The hopefull half-paced punt forward became ever more in evidence, the lack of movement became embarrassing - particularly for Naughton who worked so hard down the right and, in the end, we made them look respectable. But Vitor was immense, Wellens much improved, Abe had his best game to date including an assist and Naughton showed 90 minutes of the sort of attitude, commitment and fitness that we need from everyone. At the other end of the scale Weale seemed set on committing footballing suicide with his so-called clearances and was not particularly convincing in other phases. In terms of team performance it was no more than 5/10. And, as a coach, I'd still have been ashamed to have been been responsible.
Matt Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 A win ugly and a clean sheet. All I want now is a goal from a corner please! I wonder what odds a bookmaker would give me for us not to score a from a corner all season.
Corky Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 Well that was all about the result, which we're in no position to turn down, but it could've been stolen away in the last seconds as Brown missed a glorious chance. In the first 20 minutes or so we could've conceded two yet this was the period where we played our best football, neat moves and tantalising crosses into the box, pushing Preston right back. The game drifted for a while before we scored a very good goal, Waghorn and Abe doing well to provide an opportunity for Gallagher who converted it clinically. Preston were poor and we should've done more to put the game to bed, but thankfully we got home. The good performances for me were Vitor, Naughton, Abe, Cunningham and Wellens- King, Hobbs and Gallagher did well enough but the front two didn't link to great effect and Weale worried me all afternoon. Pleased with the result but we can play better.
Thracian Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 I wonder what odds a bookmaker would give me for us not to score a from a corner all season. It would be something if we showed any signs of having worked on our corners in terms of variety, accuracy and timing. But as far as I see we have a Plan A (two guys coming in at the back) and otherwise its a lottery and we look as likely to win it as the real one. We don't show signs of getting close yet still persevere with the same approach. Talk about moronic. If we've no-one on our staff with the presence, imagination and authority to organise improvement then we need to get someone quick. We're just giving potential goals away. Furthermore we need strikers who have more than one or two areas of talent. We need guys who are fast enough and fit enough to get into the penalty area, brave enough to go where it hurts, strong enough to demand the sort of passes they want, clever and accurate enough to make the best of them and durable enough to take the knocks. On top of that they need to be able to control the ball quickly and to pass well enough and quickly enough to bring others into the game. Anything less is a waste of money yet we've been making do for years. I'd also want to be involving Jeff Schlupp from the Academy. He's raw but he's quick, he can pass and he can shoot. Five goals in the last two games and City top of the table yet again...it's time somebody gave the lad some encouragement and put him on the bench. In fact, as was mentioned last year, I'd always want an Academy player on the bench. Cos, big wages or not, our current strikers are a disappointment from all I've seen.
Finnegan Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 What's happened to the good old Andy King at the near post?
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 Good win, hard fought and not the best game ever but its the result that matters.
foxoffderby Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 Not gonna start a new thread but there were around 40 ex city players at the ground tonight. Most of you guys don't sit in the West stand but they were all there today going back to the 60's. I met Steve Lynex, Julian Joachim, Ian Marshall, Richard Smith Steve Walsh etc amgonst others. Tony James was the highlight for me I met him in the Great Lounge he was a very humble guy who was surpringsly quite embrassed that somebody recognised him. We chated about that goal against Oxford that saved us from goiing down to the old division 3 back in the 80's. A very nice guy overall. Got a lot of photos and autographs from my heros of days gone by. Great night.

foxoffderby Posted 30 October 2010 Posted 30 October 2010 awesome! would love to see some of the photos! I'd be too embarassed to put them out on this website as I'm quite a private person. A lot of them I had taken with my son. These guys have aged so much you wouldn't recognise them apart from Joachim who still looks the same as he was back in the day.
