Pompey Player Ratings

How do none of the defenders lose marks? Horrible defending for the goal. Cost us it more than Ricardo, if Nugent's marked up then it's not a goal.

They will when I see the replay. Which I haven't as yet.

Ricardo 3 (All for his distribution. Otherwise he had one important thing to do, fluffed it and cost us a goal andultimately the game. He never shows any authority dealing with crosses).

Naughton 6.5 (One excellent shot which might have got us an equaliser and an acceptable all-round shift).

Bamba - 6 (Some good things but vulnerable at others.).

Bruma 6 (Never put under much pressure once Portsmouth went ahead but okay. Neither centre-back looked a goal threat.).

Mee 6 (I couldn't believe how one-footed he looked and how unconvincing he was early on. He stayed involved and had a reasonable second half)

Gally 6 (At least tried to make things happen in various ways and had arguably our best chance when he failed to beat their keeper when one on one.

Abe 5 (Won his share of the ball but his passing was awful and, once again, he posed no goal threat for all his industry).

King 5.5 (Two headers from crosses that were just a b it too high for him. Competent enough on the ball but lacked the drive and urgency to have a lot of impact. Seems to have become a bit overshadowed by Yakubu - and the same might apply to Vassell. Certainly all the passing and moving they were involved in seems to have gone).

Wellens 4.5 (Nothing really came off for him and he seems to have lost that crispness that lifted his game from good to almost excellent. Being fair I don't think the runners or the options were there for him to use).

Vassell 5.5 (STarted well, apart from his final crosses, but faded)

Yak 4 (Perhaps more involved than in some of his recent games but, where it counts, in and around the box, his finishing was anything but Premiership class) .

Subs

Dyer 4 (One dangerous low cross which should have at least produced a threat had anyone committed themselves forward but they didn't. Otherwise I just don't think we used him or gave him the support needed to let him run at people)

Waghorn 2 (Had one great chance from medium range and, as is so typical, just blasted it over the bar).

Sven and Faz: 2 (A fifth of the marks available and I'm probably being generous cos we didn't do ourselves justice for that percentage of the game. Dropping Vitor made no sense after his two goals and our clean sheet away from home. We didn't attempt to impose our will on the game and as against other decent teams we didn't go out as if we believed in what we were doing. There really were so many failings today it's not worth discussing them. Put bluntly, I wasn't impressed at all - not with the little things or the big things).

You just can't bring yourself to critizise your darling Andy King, can you?

The defense was as much at fault for the goal, and yet you give Ricardo a 3, but all defenders a 6?

I'm blaming Bamba for the goal because if he didn't dick around with it trying to be Ronaldo which he ain't we wouldn't of conceded the corener which lead to the goal. Yes poor keeping from Ricardo but if Bamba had just headed it straight out from a long punt none of it would of happened.

Ricardo -5- At fault for goal, otherwise had little to do

Naughton -7- Played well

Bamba -6- Average

Bruma -6- Improved in second half, good recovery speed

Mee -5- Misplaced passes in first half

Abe -7- Did his job

Wellens -6- Good in first half, faded in second

King -5- Pulled out of several challenges

Gallagher -6- Tried to be creative

Yakubu -5- Better than against Norwich, but still not much of a threat

Vassell -5- One good run and cross, otherwise little impact

SUBS -5- No impact

Bad, but not as bad as some suggest.

Ricardo 5 Didn't have much to do - didn't do well when he did

Naughton 6 not up to his usual standard - but still had our best effort

Bamba 5 Not great. At fault with goal. Beaten in the air too often.

Bruma 5 Not a patch on the player we saw at QPR. Also failed to win his headers.

Mee 6 Terrible in first half. Better in second.

King 5 Missed with free header in first half. Anonymous in second.

Abe 6 Competed well.

Wellens 6 Again, not at his best.

Vassell 5 No end product as usual.

Yakubu 5 Occasional flash of ability always spoiled by final ball.

Gallagher 7 Our best player. But that's not saying much.

Dyer 5 Speed but nothing else

Waghorn 5 One shot - off-target.

I have criticised King - both here and in my match summary and am greatly concerned about why a guy who scored so frequently and who remains out top scorer - should suddenly have fewer chances and see his goals run dry up.

I'm also bothered that our pass-and-move football is fast disappearing to be replaced by something altogether different and less effective.

I've adjusted the defenders marks anyway but the difference with Ricardo is that he really had one important thing to do and the way he handled it was woeful as is clearly confirmed on the video. In fact what he did was probably the worst option. He also double punched anothe clearance when I thought he could have caught it.

As for the back four they were involved quite busily in other aspects of the game and, while none came out with honours they all did good and bad things, hence their marks.

Ricardo - 3 - He cost us the first goal. Came out and got NO WHERE near the ball and left the goal open. Ok after that.

Naughton - 6 - Decent but was marked out of the game.

Bamba - 6 - A bit shaky today.

Bruma - 5 - He was ok.

Mee - 6 - Started badly but showed passion towards the end.

(Defenders consistently beaten in the air by Kitson)

Gally - 6 - Some good balls in, Pompey were too physical for him.

Abe - 5 - He was ok.

King - 4 - Yet again, he was absent.

Wellens - 4 - Did nothing.

Vassell - 6 - Good runs but CROSS/SHOOT FFS.

Yak - 2 - I hate this man/blob. He did nothing and wasted chances yet again.

Waggy & Dyer - 3 - Barely touched it.

Sven - 3 - Changed winning side, bad subs, can't get the players fired up.

did I miss the second?

Ricardo - 5 - Say what you like about defenders marking, when it comes to a ball in the air he is clueless.

Naughton - 6 - Not too bad but not too good either

Bamba - 5 - Not his usual self

Bruma - 6 - Better than Bamba but not great. Don't know why he started over Vitor really.

Mee - 5 - pretty poor defensively, helped out going forward second half

Abe - 6 - Was surprised he came off, did ok all things considered.

King - 5 - Missed a couple of chances, did not a lot else.

Wellens - 5 - Poor.

Vassell - 5 - Largely innefctual

Yakubu - 4 - I do like Yakubu but he was an absolute waste today, contributed nothing.

Gallagher - 6 - Best of a bad bunch. Showed some creativity and if anyone was going to make something looked like it would've been him.

Waggy and Dyer both 5's, neither effected the game in any way shape or form.

Bad day at the office for Sven today.

Completely uninspiring.

One of the highlight of the game for me had to be the ball Wellens played to Gally. Unreal, probably one of the best passes i've seen this season.

If you're thinking of the ball where Gally ended up missing the 1-on-1 I think it was Bruma that did that! Was a stunning ball!

I stand corrected, it was indeed stunning.

More of that please :)

Ricardo 5 - Nothing to do but his fault again for another conceded goal

Naughton 6 - Always consistent

Bamba 6 - Not too bad, would of been better if partnered by Vitor

Bruma 6 - He is a decent defender, but would like to see him back in midfield

Mee 4 - Poor game today, looked scared

King 4 - Need a missing sign outside the stadium, have you seen this man in the name of Andy King?

Wellens 6 - Got stuck in but players around him let him down

Abe 7 - Quiet but affective again, never puts a foot wrong

Vassell 7 - Thought he played well actually tackled, won headers decent pace

Gallagher 5 - Thought he was poor today, nothing special

Yakubu 3 - Piss off fat Yak

Ricardo - 5 Distribution is better than Weale's...but everything else is worse

Naughton - 6.5 Best player in our squad in his position

Bruma - 5.5 Reasonable but no authority

Bamba - 5 Massive cock-up just round the corner for him

Mee - 4 Crap game today. If I were Berner I'd **** off now, Sven has made it perfectly clear he doesn't want him, if he brings in a loanee LB (then loanee CB) to displace him in the team

Gallagher - 5 Free kicks were so bad he'd get a ribbing off my old school XI. Did little else apart from miss a sitter

Wellens - 6 About the only midfielder that tried today

King - 4 Apart from missing a couple of chances I'm stuggling to remember anything that he brought to the team today. Unless he cracks good jokes in the dressing-room

Abe - 5 Gave nothing more than a depressingly tokenistic performance

Vassell - 4 One good run in the 1st half. Did sweet FA after that

Yakubu - 5 Missed a couple of easy chances

One strange observation. Why do we struggle when Bruma plays?

The defence seems disrupted and we loose points.

Posted

There's no point in slagging all the players off after that.

It was a poor performance.

Pompey came with a game plan to disrupt our flowing passing football by getting in our faces and being firm in the challenge.

It worked, and Sven needs to realize that teams are now aware that if you let us play our game we will cut you to ribbons, so they come to spoil, and he needs to have plans to counter act these tactics.

Next season if Sven is still here he will need to add some strength to the team, or else this will happen over and over again.

Ricardo 6.5 Secondary responsibility for goal (with Bamba); good distribution

Naughton 7 Solid at back; some threat going forward

Bamba 5.5 A mixed bag

Bruma 7 Pretty solid

Mee 5 Dodgy at times

Abe 6.5 Solid, surprised he was subbed

Wellens 6 OK but no more

King 4.5 Missed good chances, little other contribution - a bit of a slump now

Gallagher 6 Well involved but poor set pieces today

Vassell 5 Tries but rarely looks like creating, never looks like scoring

Yakubu 5 Good link play, but poor in front of goal

Dyer & Waghorn: 5.5 Changed nothing

Pompey: 7 for efficiency; 2 for morality (constant petty fouling, time-wasting & rolling on floor)

Ref: 2 Never got a grip; consistently poor decision-making

It's not just about strength, the other way a passing side can counter this kind of opposition is to move the ball quickly. This of course requires excellent off the ball movement so that the man on the ball has easy options though and this is an area I think could use a great deal of work in our team. Our movement yesterday rarely rose above pedestrian for the most part which played into Portsmouth hands.

There were several good moments with Wellens, Naughton and Vassell joining up in the first half and I felt that was where we were likely to create chances but that disappeared as thengame progressed.

King better sign that contract quick because he can forget Prem clubs after him. Since Derby he has been league 1 standard.

We need a midfielder to get us out this league next season who can get a grip on a game
