Will the striker situation get resolved this coming week or will we have to wait a bit longer, anyone know?

I can see it dragging on to the end of the window, where we will be in alot better position to negotiate.

Agreed. Any player in the last year of his contract (Maynard, Long) may well go at the end of the transfer window for a fraction of the prices being thrown around at the mo. Obviously, if there's competition for their signatures, then waiting is a more risky game to play on the one hand, but on the other, you do make it more likely to pick up a bargain/avoid being put over the barrel.

The people in charge of the club are not stupid, and will have a number of plans to deal with any possible eventuality. If we wait till the last few days of August, and miss out on our top targets, I'm sure we'll move onto other targets, and if we're very unlucky and don't get anyone in before the transfer window closes, then we use the loan market. There's still plenty of time. Even though it already seems like a long wait, we have no reason to worry.

I have to say, I think yesterday really strengthened our hand re: Maynard, but weirdly, would we still want him here? Could we do better? Could be an interesting week.

But Maynard and Long would be OUR player, with a sell on value. Where are this would be £3m in Chelseas sky rocket and we're left with nothing after 12 months other than memories.

Memories of promotion? And the ability to spend £90m on players

ps. I agree though, that was my main feeling about bringing on players for other clubs last season, although needs, must

Just been reading the Bristol boards, they've finally realised they are relegation material and near enough all of them would rather sell Maynard to buy a couple of defenders to stop them going down. Also their manager came out saying he has no money to bring new players in without offloading first.

Reading between the lines I think we will sign him very soon. It won't drag out until then end of the window as they will want the chance to spend the money they get for Maynard. With Carew going West Ham i'd say we are front runners and we may even get him for less than what we previously offered as they are getting desperate now... or is that just wishful thinking?

Well according to the people, West Ham will make a 4m pound bid plus offer 25,000 in wages

I agree. Whilst it might make more business sense on the surface to invest in our own players who we can sell on, it's more important right now that we win promotion. The main objective of this season is to go up, whilst investing for the future, whilst still important, is secondary.

Borrowing a player like Sturridge for the season could make more sense financially, because he's much better than anyone we could afford to buy/who would want to sign for us permanently, and would make it more likely that we reap the rewards of PL status. He is a level above, and would tear Championship defences to shreds.

But it doesn't guarantee you success does it, you could end up with memories of £3m (and god knows how much in wages) going down the swanny and having nothing to show for it.

250k / 500k / £1m I'm sure it would enter someones mind for a moment. £3m is just ludicrous!!

I actually think we have spent quite sensibly except for overpaying by a £1m/£1.5m on Mills, the rest represent good value (transfer fee wise). £3m spunked up the wall on a loan move does not fit in to that for me.

Buying Messi wouldn't guarantee success! What loaning a proven PL player does is make it more likely that we get to the PL. Since we've invested in the squad so heavily already this season, we should make sure promotion happens to make sure that money doesn't go to waste on an unsustainable Championship squad. We've got a good squad full of permanent signings with the future in mind. One or two players on loan who are better than anyone we can get in permanently would make the best sense financially if you look at the big picture.

It's a pretty good analogy though..

I agree with what you are saying, but not at the prices people are quoting.

The big picture is not going bust. Buying assets that can be sold off should we fail to reach the premier league if the money runs out, goes some way to ensuring that. Spending £3m that you will not get 1p back on does not make sense no matter what "picture" you're looking at.

Ourselves and Cardiff had very expensive proven premier league strikers last year, how did that work out for us? And this transfer is going to cost 3/4/5 times more than anything ourselves and Cardiff paid out.

Madness that anyone would even consider it at that price.

Looks like this is going is to be the first case of a bidding war downwards...my advice to bristol...stick him on ebay...lowest bid wins....... we will throw in weale, cos james is now shite...im glad the bristol owners are not managing my assets....

Sturridge wouldn't drop down anyway especially now Bolton are interested again since he was getting regular PL football there and banging in the goals
