foxoffderby Posted 18 May 2011 Posted 18 May 2011 Just spoken to a friend of mine who owns a well known removels company in Leicester he says Stowell is leaving us to go to Bristol. Not sure if its City or Rovers he will tell me at the weekend. He is moving him tommoro. He is a good source he has moved two other first team players in the past, DNG and Kermit.
shen Posted 18 May 2011 Posted 18 May 2011 I seem to remember some pointing the finger at Stowell when trying to analyse Ricardo/Weale's poor form. No doubt they'll be pleased about this. Let's see if things improve next season with a new coach then.
SMX11 Posted 18 May 2011 Posted 18 May 2011 He has great passion but as people have pointed out the goalkeepers that have come to club do seem to be encouraged to punch/flap at the ball over time. Don't know any coaches that could replace him though.
Jimmy Posted 18 May 2011 Posted 18 May 2011 Punching the ball is actually the preferred option all over the world its not flapping its just a peculiar British thing that keepers are always supposed to catch the ball

Bert Posted 18 May 2011 Posted 18 May 2011 His kids live there. Dunno whether he's leaving or not though. thorpefox Posted 18 May 2011 Posted 18 May 2011 at last a manager sees the weak link. can anyone name a decent keeper that has improved or at least maintained the standard since he was employed? get ready to see some clean sheets..
sdb Posted 18 May 2011 Posted 18 May 2011 Not too bothered. Our goalkeepers generally worsen during their time with us. May be more to do with moaning fans, or just coincidence, but not losing sleep over this tbh.
Finnegan Posted 19 May 2011 Posted 19 May 2011 Perhaps because its much safer to catch the ball. Hm, I generally agree but it depends how good you are at catching and punching! If you've a keeper who's a fabulous shot stopper, organizes his defence very well and is brave when someone's through one on one would you drop him because he was a bit of a butter fingers? Or simply train him to punch away? I do generally dislike the trend of punching that's ebbed in from the continent but I can also imagine that a ball from a corner is likely far harder to catch now than it was in 1960, given technology changes to the balls themselves and the increased power of the players taking them. If you drop a ball at your feet in the box there's every chance of an easy tap in. At least if you punch the ball out and it goes to an opponent you should, in theory, have your defence between him and the goal. I dunno. It's all speculative. I'd much rather a keeper be able to catch everything but I get why they don't so much now.
Thracian Posted 19 May 2011 Posted 19 May 2011 All the best to him, our best dead ball crosser. Haha, that thought crossed my mind as well! Years ago. catching the crosses was considered the mark of a competent goalkeeper and continental "flappers" were mocked but, as pointed out elsewhere, the modern ball moves alarmingly in the air and there seems to be much more emphasis now on trying to obstruct and impede the goalkeeper. It means that they rarely have a clear path to any cross and there are far too many big, strong obstacles in the way to be sure of hanging on to the ball even if they get there. Bottom line is to make the right decisions and believe in them. If that means punching or flicking the ball on to relative safety, so be it. The job then is to cover the next phase quickly. I really don't care how goalkeeper's do their job so long as they keep the ball out of the net, communicate/organise well and give their defensive team-mates a feeling of confidence. As for Stowell it's probably time he moved on. He's been a decent servant, a solid reliable professional but I've seen nothing to suggest he's especially inspiring.

Perhaps because its much safer to catch the ball. not if you're trying to come through a group of 3 or 4 players, how many times do you see it that a keeper tries to do that and ends up dropping the ball and a goal scored, come out and punch and the ball is cleared

alanf0x Posted 27 May 2011 Posted 27 May 2011 He is not leaving the club, just moving house, so another 2 pages of pointless end of season posts! As he said, does it mean that everyone that lives 50 miles of Leicester is leaving?!
