Cardiff have confirmed that striker Jay Bothroyd and wing Chris Burke will not be at the club next season.

Both players were out of contract and a club statement on their retained list confirmed that both men would leave.

"Contracts have not been offered to Jay Bothroyd and Chris Burke following an inability for all parties to agree suitable terms," read the statement.

Gavin Rae and Martin John have been released, while Adam Matthews leaves having agreed terms with Celtic.

On-loan players Craig Bellamy, Jason Brown, Stephen Bywater, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Jason Koumas, Seyi Olofinjana and Jlloyd Samuel are to return to their parent clubs.

The moves come at the end of a season in which the Bluebirds again failed to win promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

They lost 3-0 on aggregate to Reading, all of the goals coming in the play-off semi-final second leg at Cardiff City Stadium, condemning Dave Jones' side to fourth place.

However, Wales star Bellamy has said he is keen to return for another season should Manchester City agree to another loan deal, having played for his hometown club throughout last season.

Anthony Gerrard, Solomon Taiwo and Aaron Wildig are to return to Cardiff City having been on loan at other clubs.

Emerging players Jonathan Meades and Jordan Santiago have been offered new professional contracts, while manager Dave Jones' squad will be boosted from the youth ranks as Academy players Ibrahim Farah, Nathaniel Jarvis and Alex Evans have all been offered senior terms.

Sameth Al-Basith and Steffan Jones have been released from the Academy.

With their lack of money, and most of their first team squad being loanee's last season. Cardiff are well and truly fooked.

There but for the grace of God and all that.

Our squad was made up largely of loanees of course but we're lucky enough to have owners who are willing and able to invest and either bring in them permanently, or find quality replacements. It does show the danger of relying too much on short term fixes though.

Still, it's funny cos it's Cardiff.

Other people may be saying that those two players are average, but I'd certainly take them both at Leicester.

Bothroyd is a class Championship striker, I'd take him happily, but he will go to the Prem I imagine. Or maybe Birmingham..?

Hahaha most Championship clubs, let alone Cardiff, can afford to let an England international go for nothing. Morons. Hope they crash and burn now.

Newcastle, Sunderland and Everton are first on the scene according to people on Twitter.

Wouldnt suprise me if he went Everton. Free transfer an all that.

Yeah all three make sense, Newcastle are obviously desperate for a striker, Sunderland need to replace Darren Bent with a new striker, and Everton as per will be after frees and cheap deals.

Be an interesting scramble though.
