He's not bald Posted 5 August 2011 Posted 5 August 2011 Alright? First post on here so go easy (yeah, right...) but as someone who spends their working life as a journo / editor spending most of my day sifting through press releases (read: 'smelling bullsh*t) I thought McDermott's statement today was pretty interesting - not in terms of what he said, but what he didn't say - allow me to translate: "I said in the week on the radio that we had had no interest from the Premier League, but that is not strictly the case," - means: "Interest from PL clubs yes, offers no" "What I expect, which generally happens, is that someone will make an offer and then you will get five or six Premier League clubs making bids. Hopefully they won't leave it too late if they want to do that." means: non-prem clubs (Us & West Ham) have made offers, one of which we have turned down (West Ham, valuation not met) the other we haven't yet - i.e. 'we are hoping to **** a prem club offers more before LCFC's offer expires...' "I've said we won't replace Shane Long. But that doesn't mean we won't bring anyone in" means: 'we can't afford to buy a striker of his quality, even if we do get 7.5m for him, because we still haven't replaced Mills and the money from his sale is still balancing the books' In short, if no PL clubs bid for him, I reckon we're in with a damn good shout (if, that is, he wants to come here. And who wouldn't, we're MASSIVE aren't we??) Now I could be wrong about all of the above, but hey, I've been reading this forum for a while now and I'm guessing facts or accuracy are not neccessary. Just an opnion / hope.... And I live in Brighton these days so don't get to as many games as I would like these days, but before anyone calls me a plastic / new boy or any of that nonsense let me say one thing: If you're not old enough to remember shouting 'Rooster' at Kevin Russell, you can **** off. cheers J.. Utter recycle!!...many on here are looking for a new messiah, well I ain't one of them. While most of what you say makes perfect sense you spout nothing that hasn't been said before or can't be logically guessed at...with all due respect you may well be in the business but please don't insult my intelligence by repeating old news, if you have some new insight by all means share, until then and to keep your integrity and respect intact I would kindly suggest you keep quiet!
MPH Posted 5 August 2011 Posted 5 August 2011 Him and Tommy wright were fookin legends in my eyes! Thank you for the memories! their best combined performance was against Cambridge in the 2nd leg of the play off semi final at Filbert Street when we won 5-0

foxes2011 Posted 5 August 2011 Posted 5 August 2011 its unfair we judge players yet, our attacking trio could well work if that is indeed what sven gos for i expect vassel, nugent and gallagher with gally and vassel working as wing strikers, who knows we might play well and score a few goals then people wont be so worried about our attack, id love long or other attackers but we have to be realistic these players might be out of the price range, i also think a young waghorn might come up with some goals of the bench unless he leaves, so lets not worry so much see how it gos against cov first. alot of teams now use the 4-3-3 (4-5-1) and it defenatly works better for defending having 3 cms is a good way to try and control the game

Lester LXXIV Posted 6 August 2011 Posted 6 August 2011 their best combined performance was against Cambridge in the 2nd leg of the play off semi final at Filbert Street when we won 5-0 That's up there as one of the best games I've been to. Especially after attending the tight 1-1 draw at the Abbey a few days before! Ooh Tommy Wright!
Mr.Lowe Posted 6 August 2011 Posted 6 August 2011 Still nothing to report on this then? Ive heard an offer is apparently being considered this weekend, could the first sign the bid has been accepted is if he doesn't feature for them today? Promotion would be nothing but automatic is we got him in my opinion!

Pookie Posted 6 August 2011 Posted 6 August 2011 I think today will Shane Long's farewell game at Reading (I don't have any inside info), I think he will be sold before their next home game on the 20th August. Reading are looking to cash in and I feel they may want a few days to get somebody in before the transfer window shuts. I would love it if he came here, but I feel a prem club will take a chance on him.

MikeyT Posted 6 August 2011 Posted 6 August 2011 If he scores today it will likely get the attention of the PL teams looking at him more. I dunno, i think most managers know what he's capable of now and 1 game today i can't imagine will sway them much.Unless he has an absolute stinker of course.
dbtcity Posted 6 August 2011 Posted 6 August 2011 I just can't see many prem clubs stumping up 8 million for a championship forward 2 be honest, I hope I'm right as I would love to see him at the kingpower stadium
cc_star Posted 6 August 2011 Posted 6 August 2011 I just can't see many prem clubs stumping up 8 million for a championship forward 2 be honest, I hope I'm right as I would love to see him at the kingpower stadium Connor Wickham... £13m? Southampton are supposed to have someone valued at £15m by Arsenal Nugent + Maynard or Nugent + Long looks like a top 2 forward line Get it done Svennis
ithuriel Posted 6 August 2011 Posted 6 August 2011 Just hope we do not miss out on players by trying to be too shrewd, would be gutted to miss out on striker's by getting gazumped whilst waiting for the price to drop as the transfer window deadline approaches.
cc_star Posted 6 August 2011 Posted 6 August 2011 Carew is expected to be unveiled as a West Ham player Fourth Official hinted that may mean they'll no longer be in for Long
MikeyT Posted 6 August 2011 Posted 6 August 2011 SkySports Sky Sports #football Brian McDermott has labelled Shane Long a "hero" ahead of what could be his final game at the Madejski
Mr.Lowe Posted 6 August 2011 Posted 6 August 2011 Fourth_Official Fourth Official Shane Long starts for Reading #RFC
Raw Dykes Posted 6 August 2011 Posted 6 August 2011 Just hope we do not miss out on players by trying to be too shrewd, would be gutted to miss out on striker's by getting gazumped whilst waiting for the price to drop as the transfer window deadline approaches. I wouldn't worry about it - I'm sure Sven will bring someone in who he believes can improve the attack before the transfer window closes.
