http://www.fanhouse.co.uk/2011/08/30/sven-goran-eriksson-facing-race-against-time-after-nicky-maynard/

Money can't buy you love after all then, for Sven Goran Eriksson's intention to smash Leicester's transfer record for Nicky Maynard seems to have finally fallen flat.

Eriksson's search for a proven, 20-goal a season striker this summer has been a scatter-gun approach although Bristol City striker Maynard has always been his top target.

But after making a fourth offer on Monday it appears that Maynard has turned down the move and could even sign a new contract with the Robins.

The deal was believed to be a down payment of £5.5 million, with additional bits and pieces taking the package to just over £6 million. If it had been successful, it would have rid Leicester of the embarrassing sight of Ade Akinbiyi remaining the biggest buy in their history.

Barring a complete change of heart, Maynard will join an exclusive club of players this summer to have snubbed the riches on offer at the King Power Stadium, leaving Eriksson in a bit of a quandry with the transfer deadline looming.

Despite recruiting 12 players this season, in a level of spending never before seen in the Championship, the search for a forward has proven excruciating.

Shane Long, Jermaine Beckford, Emile Heskey and Robbie Keane are just four of the players to reject moves to join Eriksson's brave revolution and you can now add Maynard to the list.

Reports suggest that Fulham striker Andy Johnson is now the latest target, and he has certainly been another striker to come up on Leicester's radar.

A bid of £4 million has apparently been submitted and it must surely resemble a final throw of the dice for Eriksson, who is fast running out of realistic options.

That said, there is certainly no guarantee with Johnson. He would have to drop down a division, has already impressed under new manager Martin Jol and has been offered a new contract at Craven Cottage.

Max Gradel, the Leeds winger, is another possibility. Gradel spent three frustrating years at Leicester before being sold for a pittance by former manager Nigel Pearson but could be offered a surprise return back.

Eriksson is convinced that a goalscoring forward will provide the final piece in the jigsaw, as the club's mega-rich Thai owners show no signs of reining in their spending.

He is fast running out of time but surely there is room for one final surprise before the window slams shut. Then again, nothing should surprise us after Eriksson's stunning spending spree so expect the unexpected.

lol I've read this entire page somewhere before.

Yep.

Pretty sure we called bullshit on it this morning, seeing as he somehow managed to turn us down before Bristol City had even made a decision on the bid.

They still haven't made a decision as far as we know have they?

Fits more with the theory that its the clubs slowing the process down, rather than the player.

As I said before they will leave it till the last minute, to reject us, weather it's Maynard or bristol, then we have **** all time to get anyone else in!!! **** off Bristol

Well I think we quite safely say Nicky Maynard is a complete bellend.

Been saying this for months if he didnt want to come here or to any other championship club he should have come out and said it. I know he doesnt have to come out and say anything but it would have been the right thing to do. fair enough if the guy wants to play in the prem fair play to him , but he should be flattered that a team is bidding £6m for him regardless of the fact that we are only playing in the championship. does anybody else think that Bristol city may have told him to keep his mouth shut so we focus our attention on him all summer play a waiting game and end up with no new striker because we left it so long. :dunno:

As has been said numerous times on the Maynard threads so far, it seems highly likely that Sven already knows that Maynard would be interested in a move to us. The problem lies between the two clubs, not the player.

Any decent sources are being buried under a gigantic pile of utter garbage, but John Percy should be trusted - certainly above nameless Twitter accounts with less than 200 followers.

Strikes me as odd that it's completely at odds with what Fourth Official is tweeting, but why would we be bidding £6.5m for Jelavic today if we had confidence that Maynard would be arriving? I think we're onto Plan Z Sub-Section 71 Clause 14 now.

If the bid's been rejected than Bristol City are fools. He will leave on a free in the Summer and then they'll be without a star striker or any money.

Piss myself if he gets injured now. Is it definitely off then and can we close the thread??

Doubt this is going to happen now as we are bidding left right and centre for other strikers

Maynard and bristol city are right retards if this is true

Rather than going for more established players i.e. Keane or even losing out to Maynard, maybe we should have gone for somebody who wants to prove himself at a higher level rather than drop down - i.e. Adam Le Fondre.

I can see it now, Waggers will end up staying and we won't get anybody in.. then again, if we do get a striker in it'll be somebody we haven't yet been linked with.
