Webbo Posted 9 September 2011 Posted 9 September 2011 I saw some kids in Braunstone today playing kerby (curby?) and it took me back to when I was a kid. Everybody seemed to have a slightly different set of rules depending what street you were from. What games do you remember playing when you were a kid?

nothin2seehere Posted 9 September 2011 Posted 9 September 2011 Tops. Back in the day, we used to collect the dust caps off beer barrels. We'd then assign a value to each top based on how rare they were to obtain. If we could throw a top to hit another, we'd win that top. Christ, but that was a long time ago, it might have been a Welsh thing, none of my English mates ever heard of it I had a Tesco carrier bag or two full of the damn things. And: Sleeping lions. Doctors and nurses. How green you are (may have been called something different / regional variations).
purpleronnie Posted 9 September 2011 Posted 9 September 2011 Loved curby. Buzz off - kind of like hide and seek, usually the person counting was counting near a lampost and would go looking for the people hiding and those hiding needed to get to the lampost and call buzz off - meaning the person counting has to count again. Wall-e - nope not the film, but simply kicking the ball against a wall and the other person needed to do the same without the ball stopping. There was a similar game involving throwing a ball against a wall and others who were out of the game could block the ball - played both games at school - no doubt thesedays it wouldnt be allowed. I'm sure there was a game called dangermouse - something involving one person with his back to the others, calling out letters and for some reason stepping closer...vague I know.

We had a game like that. You had to kick the ball from where ever you stopped it. We had different words that when you missed you got a letter and when you'd spelt that word you were out.
cambridgefox Posted 9 September 2011 Posted 9 September 2011 Chain Tig.Tig but when you caught someone you had to hold hands and chase,if there were 4 or 5 of you the corners were dodgy as fock for the one on the end,we had a few broken bones and stitches at my primary school. davieG Posted 9 September 2011 Posted 9 September 2011 I was thinking today about starting a similar topic when I was reminded of a game we played - cricket but with dice. We used to list two sides and one person would bat whilst the other bowled. To score runs you rolled the dice 1 to 4 & 6 if you rolled a 5 you were out, the other dice was then rolled to determine how you were out as in 1 = Bowled, 2 = Caught etc if you rolled a 5 it was classed as a no ball and you carried on. We used to keep a proper score card with the player batting changing on odd numbers in fact it was all done and recorded in the most exacting detail and could last for hours but then we had none of electronic gadgets you get these days and TV was considered a luxury. The hide and seek game we called it Pod.

jonno24 Posted 9 September 2011 Posted 9 September 2011 All the usual that have been mentioned. But not actually a game of sorts but we used to play number 1 where at the end of the week we would get together and see who had got the number 1 shiney from the football stickers and if no-one did we would carry on until someone did i bet a whole bag of stickers for a Number 1 once. The days where getting a pack of stickers with 3 shineys in it are long gone
