AmI the only one that thought yesterdays performance wasn't amazing? I thought it was definitely an improvement - we were more disciplined, the defence looked stronger, Vassell was very good, and Beckford seemed dangerous. But people seem to have reacted like we destroyed them! I really didn't think that was the case. We still didn't create that many chances, and the midfield was very odd - seemed like a flat 4 but they were all centre mid's. I'm not saying we were crap - we were the better team and deserved to win, and I'm pleased we're moving in the right direction. People just seem blinded by the fact we got 3 points. If CMS had put that sitter away people would still be moaning because we didn't create enough. Maybe really what I'm saying is that half the fans don't seem to know what the hell they're talking about!! Its just "we won, we're amazing" or "we lost, sack Sven"!!!
Happy Fox Posted 18 September 2011 Posted 18 September 2011 Barring the referees cock up on Peltier's goal, I felt it was a very conformable performance yes we could have scored more goals but goal difference isn't important at this stage of the season, getting 3 points was.
Corky Posted 18 September 2011 Posted 18 September 2011 Most people have said pretty much what you have, that we were improved and disciplined. I would've been disappointed if we hadn't won because we were the better side and deserved the points, which suggests that we did create enough.

We were the better team and deserved the points but CMS' sitter and a couple of other instances did worry me, and had CMS put it away it would've been a very different result and I'm sure we would've seen a lot of moaning.

I can see what your saying, in the first half the there seemed to be no urgency in the play, no pressing, and the play seemed a bit slow and lackluster.. however, even with this the team totally controlled the game and aside from a number of occasions brighton didnt test Kasper at all.. but the team just started slow and continued to gain momentum as the game went on and ultimately won the game and should have won by a more comfortable margin in my opinion. On another not i found this game thoroughly entertaining!
gazfox9 Posted 18 September 2011 Posted 18 September 2011 I think a lot of it can be put down to the fact that Brighton were supposedly the best side we've faced yet, but it was our most comfortable victory thus far. Had we played like that against, say, Doncaster I don't think the hype would've been anywhere near what it was.

We weren't amazing, and one game doesn't change some of the worrying things in our game. But if we can turn on a performance like that on a regular basis we won't be far away. Need to get some consistency now.

I'll take that.

In the first half we we're hesitant, a little bit slow passing the ball and you got the feeling that if Brighton scored first then it would be the same old thing. The second half we scored early and the nervousness vanished to be replaced by crisp passing and dominating the game quite easily, They only ever really got back into it first due to Kasper making a mess of kicking the ball into touch for Bamba to recieve treatment, which lead to a small period of them having the ball and secondly late on when Pantsil replaced Peltier and was too lax with the ball getting caught in possession in dangerous areas. We should have scored more but their defnce kept commiting fouls on our forwards that soon brought a rash of yellows and then a second yellow for handball and a red.
Finnegan Posted 19 September 2011 Posted 19 September 2011 I thought the first half was a pretty crap spectacle all round, to be honest. They had no interest in winning the game and we just had completely the wrong approach. If a team's going to throw eleven men behind the ball and refuse to play, you're going to need to break them down a bit with pace, pulling them about the park. But the likes of Wellens just seemed content to slow the game right down, pass around in front of them and not really get anywhere. We're not Barcelona, we're not going to be able to patiently wait for a hole and then exploit it. It's when we upped the tempo a little in the second half we looked more dangerous (and immediately scored.) Think people were happy that we gave them almost nothing by way of chances, though. It's easy to watch a game without many clear cut chances and proclaim that we weren't very good; but when you consider how poor our defence has been this season and the fact we closed out the early league leaders without really breaking a sweat? I can see why people are happy. After watching Bamba's display for seventy odd minutes I was seriously sitting there thinking I'd take this fizzling out at 1 - 0 over an exciting goals-fest that had us winning 4 - 2 in the last twenty minutes. We needed that clean sheet.

Agreed, improved performance, still not perfect, we played the most inform team in the league and limited them to a couple of chances, and could have scored a couple more ourselves. It shows people's expectancy is sky high, were not going to 'batter' teams week in week out, and at times we may have to dig deep and get the ugly win!!

If you think it was a 'bloody good display' then it sounds like you're exactly the kind of fan I'm talking about - blinded by a win. And so you'd probably be the one that if we hadn't won would be saying something like "we're just not creating chances, you can't rely on Yuki Abe scoring to win us the league". I'm honestly not trying to be pessimistic here, I'm pleased we improved. I just wish fans would base their opinions on the performance as well as the result. And before anyone says its the sign of a good team that can win without playing amazingly, theres a world of difference between a team that has been playing well that gets a result on an 'off day', and a team that has been playing averagely that then get a win. The latter is most definitely applicable to us so far this season.

I totally agree with you and wanted to post something like this myself. I thought again, before kick off, Sven picked the wrong team. 4 central midfielders in midfield, and two holding men playing out wide. Because we have too many central midfielders, Danns got dropped which was abit unfair because I thought he did nothing wrong against Barnsley. I didn't think Brighton created that many chances, but I don't think we did either. I still think we are not that good, and we don't look good enough to go up. You can only beat what is in front of you, but, Mackail-Smith had a great chance to make it 1-1.

The headlines "City fire warning to promotion rivals" regularly donned the back pages, despite the fact that City were mid table and never in a million years were going to challenge for promotion. It's the 'we're a big club' level of arrogance which affects many smaller clubs and supporters.
Raj Posted 19 September 2011 Posted 19 September 2011 Most of us have been saying "it takes time to gel' and all that and on Saturday i think we witnessed the first signs of it gelling. Brighton have been in winning mentality for a while now and we could well easily have let them gain the upper hand and with the sinanigans(sp) of the goalie playing around it was clear what gameplay they had. Thought Kingy played alot better than of late abd Bamb was his usual entertaining self! Mills stil looks a player short of confidence in my opinion,and Vass was very good. I think Nugent and Beckford could be awesome together. Up the city!

Which gives me and many others hope we truely do have the potential to beat anyone in this league, I agree there are some over reactions but if we played like that against everyone in the league we would deffo end up top 2. A performance like that against Barnsley and we would be looking at a 4-0 win

The teams performance today was for me on a level par with last week, but general opinion seems to be we didn't play well. But last week we managed to score one, so people were blinded by it. Similarly, had Darius scored that header at the end, people would be on here saying we ground out a result, well done for sticking at it and other sh*t like that. Again, I'm not moaning or being pessimistic about the team, because I take a positive from today that the defence managed to hold, and it is a point away from home against a team we have struggled against recently. I'm moaning about stupid fans. It's just really pissing me off how pathetically blinded so many fans seem to be by certain things. Please please watch the game and form opinions on the performance, not just results. Clearly the result is the important thing, but no one built a promotion/play-off campaign on the back of scrapping a few goals here and there from dodgy performances (or if they did, that's not the way I'd want my team to do it).

I think our performance today was equal to last weeks (with the exception of Beckford who wasn't as sharp today), but last week we got a lucky goal.
