davieG Posted 23 November 2011 Posted 23 November 2011 A competitive, equal opportunity, financial level playing field English Premier League where every team has a chance of winning it. Or Champions League success for English clubs. I know in theory they are not mutually exclusive but practically it seems to be the case of one or the other plus you have the big 4/5 clubs claiming that without the massive additional funding they get beyond the other PL teams they would not have the same level of success in the CL.
Guest MattP Posted 23 November 2011 Posted 23 November 2011 A competitive league. Without it eventually you will kill your own game without it. We need a model similar to what Germany runs on now. In fact id like the whole program the way American sports are run implemented into the English game, problem is it can never happen with football being such a worldwide game.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 23 November 2011 Posted 23 November 2011 I'm genuinely not bothered about the CL whatsoever. I have Sky Sports, and watched maybe ten minutes last night, and I'm not watching it at all tonight. So for me, its definitely the first one. This may sound strange, but if we ever do get promoted again, I wonder whether I'll be that bothered about supporting us much further. Yes, everyone aspires to be in the PL, but why do fans aspire to it? For me, its so little old Leicester, the town I was born and bred in can have our 15 minutes of fame once again by possibly upsetting the top four in a few games, and holding our own against the big boys. Nothing else. I mean, if we did get promoted, and done really in PL to the point where we finished in the top four, I'd be happy, but only because it'd be local bragging rights to us. I really wouldn't give a fuk if we were in the CL. If someone asked me if I could choose between us winning the FA Cup or CL, I'd say the FA Cup. I know the older generation would say the same. Perhaps its because competing in the CL is so far away from any reality that it doesn't bother me at all. I mean, if we were qualifying for it every season, perhaps I'd feel slightly different.p In other words, I can't imagine ANYTHING more exciting in club football than chasing promotion to the Premiership. Once that dreams obtained, you have nothing to aspire to. Why would you want to stay in the PL? You're not going to break into the European places that easily. And if you did, (stoke for example) it REALLY wouldn't be that exciting IMO. I can't explain it any better/worse than that.I was gonna post this as a new thread, but seemed a bit pointless. Am i the only one to feel this way?
Father Ted Posted 23 November 2011 Posted 23 November 2011 No brainer surely? Competitive level playing field.
Libertine Dream Posted 23 November 2011 Posted 23 November 2011 The domestic league's create the CL so without them being competitive football slowly dies. The EPL needs to become more equal. Part of me doesn't want us to go up because 10th is best we can hope for and playing Bolton every year to see who finishes 12th is boring.

Fox92 Posted 23 November 2011 Posted 23 November 2011 For me, the first one. In theory all 20 teams have a chance of winning the Premier League, but because of the money there are only 3/4 teams challenging. That is one of the reasons why I don't think the Premier League is as good as what people, especially Sky Sports, make it out to be. Having said that, it is still the first one for me. To be fair, I am not interested in Champions League/European football though. Ok, I'll watch the final if any English teams are in it, and I'll probably watch the semi's/quater's if it is English v English, but, I don't generally watch it - it is on now but I am not watching it. I still wish English clubs the best of luck though. I still rate the FA Cup better than any cup competition. And I will watch the FA Cup final no matter what.

They've ruined football, and its only them (and anyone who's been brainwashed by them) who will tell you its the best league in the world

anotherharboroughfox Posted 23 November 2011 Posted 23 November 2011 Are there actually people out who still think it is? Frighteningly, yes.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 23 November 2011 Posted 23 November 2011 Are there actually people out who still think it is? Yes. They're the same people who tell you Rooney is worldclass
Guest MattP Posted 23 November 2011 Posted 23 November 2011 Wow, not met anyone for a while who has. I suppose the FA can arrange a few more friendlies to try and convince people if City go out the CL.
Super_horns Posted 23 November 2011 Posted 23 November 2011 I think most neturals would like to see a competitive top domestic league TBH.
Corky Posted 23 November 2011 Posted 23 November 2011 Champions League success for English clubs does nothing for me. What good would Man Utd winning it do for Leicester? A competitive league is by far the most important.
HEGGSY Posted 23 November 2011 Posted 23 November 2011 Every team below the PL aspires to get there one day, spend money, develop as a club, gain a reputation and ultimatley the best of the best in the FL get there. Then after years of following your team from the grounds of Yeovil (no offence) to the grounds of man utd and Liverpool, most fans of those teams finally realise that the PL is a league where only the big money clubs have a chance of succeeding. If we get promoted I'll be ecstatic and proud, but I'll miss the rush I got on a Saturday afternoon and the whole journey that us fans went on to get there in the first place and that's why a competitive playing field will always be more important than English teams success in the CL

Agree, Germany have one of the best set ups in the world and are still able to attract and produce world class players without the ridiculous, seemingly never ending throwing of massive amounts of cash around. It'd be great if the EPL had the same unpredictability as the Bundesliga where a team like Hoffenheim can atleast top the table for half a season.

If I'm honest I'd rather go Yeovil 5 years in a row than go to Old Trafford 5 years in a row.

I can understand not wanting to be one of those 'mediocre' clubs that does alright for themselves but never really win anything, but if we're not striving to get promoted then surely that's exactly what we'll become... except a league lower?
Haydos Posted 24 November 2011 Posted 24 November 2011 Frighteningly, yes. Yes. They're the same people who tell you Rooney is worldclass Wow, not met anyone for a while who has. Guest MattP Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 What is the best league in the world? Well I'd say the Spanish, 2 top sides in the world, is it 6 champions leagues in the last ten years? Even mid table sides like Athletico Madrid can stroll to the UEFA Cup. Sides like Real Bêtis and Celta Vigo have been relegated. For competitiveness I love Germany though.
Charl91 Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 Spanish for the "best" teams or Germany for better competition. Italy if you enjoy boredom.
ozleicester Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 You CANNOT make an artificially equal and competetive league, you end up with salary caps and player drafts etc. It then becomes mediocrity where every team has their turn at the top because they finished bottom 5 years ago and got the best draft pics. The introduction of caps and drafts and the like..change the game from "sport"..to "entertainment" DO NOT DO IT!!!

This attitude is what's wrong with the game. They represent England in the Champions League on a year by year basis. This attitude makes them sound like they have a god given right to represent the country............which of course they think they have
