Dan Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 Reading what the Pompey fans said about us, it made me think, are there any other real rivals of ours who I'm not aware of as such? Lesser rivals who we don't particularly sing about but we do get up for it when we play them. I know there's a disliking of Stoke amongst our fans, I'm not sure why, I'm assuming it's due to sending us down? Be interesting anyway what people say.

The Doctor Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 no its from when we beat them in the play-offs at their place and it kicked off. I know Peterborough hate us I thought their fans reactions when we got relegated somewhat exacerbated the situation though?
Jimmy Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 I thought their fans reactions when we got relegated somewhat exacerbated the situation though? yeah but the origin is 1996
lcfcfem Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 I think Stoke have always had a reputation for 'thugs' to hang outside the stadium on match days, particularly back in the 80s. When we beat them in the playoffs in 1996 we knew there would be trouble - regardless of which team we were. The aftermath of this match was the most frightening that I have ever experienced, and I lived through the 70s/80s where we used to get the away bus windows smashed in all the time etc!! As a female, it normally bypasses me, but at Stoke, me, my sister, and my then 8 year old son had to have police protection to get us back to the car. Louts were actually trying to punch through the police to get to us. I have always worn my colours to matches - again because I have felt safe as a girl - but when I got back in my car I stripped off and actually drove home in my bra - well drove out down the a50 and got dressed again in Uttoxeter. Then when we played them and got relegated, I blubbed through most of it (caught on most of the TV sports channels to my embarrassment) . Heartbreaking. So, I HATE STOKE with a passion but not as much as Derby!
Iwan is a Welshman Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 Stoke's a shithole full of mutants it really bothers me that the city's come in to some footballing success (even worse in an admirable style with a sensible Manager/Chairman combo in front of regular full houses.) Norwich don't seem to like us much. Once you get passed Ipswich they're kind of short of people to hate. ...and I really don't like Southampton. Can't really put my finger on why either.

Fox92 Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 I hate Stoke. I hate Tony Pulis. I hate his long football. I hate thier fans. I hate how they reacted to when we were relegated and they were promoted. But, Stoke did not send Leicester down. We sent ourselves down.
lestajigs Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 Chelsea, villa ,pompy, maybe brum, maybe Leicester tigers
Saxondale Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 Wolves I suppose, certainly a few years back with the old Steve Walsh / Steve Bull hijinks.
jonthefox Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 Theres supposed to be rivalry between us and chelsea isnt there?. Albeit in a hooligan sense.

Chelsea sing 'over land and sea, and Leicester', but so do most clubs, even Arsenal sing that. I have heared about this rivalry, and I have heared some Leicester fans sing 'Chelsea ran away', but is it a rivalry/less obvious rivalry? I didn't think Chelsea bothered, and I know some Chelsea fans who don't know either
Guest MattP Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 Leicester Chelsea is definately one for the older fans. A friendly rivalry in a bizarre way though, we wil always drink with Chelsea on England away days. Leeds is one, though a lot of clubs hate them.
Hantsfox Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 Been following city since 1969 F A Cup final, other than the obvious ones like cov, derby and forest, i have always found the Leeds and Pompey fans always have a distinct hate/ rivalry with us. But still looking foreward too tomorrow!!
z-layrex Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 Most of the football world seems to have a bit of a disdain for us. I've not met anyone down here who doesn't have a low opinion of us apart from a few QPR and Palace fans.

I work with a lot of Saints fans who keep telling me you cant buy the league. Theres a lot of jealousy around, and when we escaped a points deduction over administration it caused a lot of disdain for us, not only with fans but throughout football.

I've not met anyone down here who doesn't have a low opinion of us apart from a few QPR and Palace fans. We lost so much credibility with our Administration even though we weren't the first because of the way it was reported and our subsequent promotion people took the view that we cheated.. In reality we were forced into it by Wise and his agent unlike most Admins we also paid back more than Ipswich did to their creditors who were in Admin just after us but they gained from our experience by going into and coming out of Admin in just a few hours plus their chairman at that time, Sheepshank was also the head of the FL.so was in a position to manipulate the media.
HEGGSY Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 Hark now hear the Leicester sing , the Chelsea ran away!!! there you go
stourbridgefox Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 Hard now hear the Leicester sing, and Chelsea ran away. Don't like the mixed tenses in that!
Tielemans63 Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 I'd agree with the comments re Stoke - I definitely see them as rivals even though they're not really local. I'd definitely say Leeds too - we had that great record against them under MON and I know from having lived up there that a lot of Leeds fans really hate us! Wolves from the McGhee era too.
Kitchandro Posted 25 November 2011 Posted 25 November 2011 Yeh I've always hated Stoke since that game in 2008. Not just that we lost to them and went down, but they really were dirty in that game, they should have had a player sent off. Then the fans invaded the pitch before the end, I didn't like that, we weren't given the right amount of stoppage time as a result but I'm probably just clutching at straws with that. All the same it pissed me off. There are a lot of teams I dislike but I wouldn't call them rivalries. It's very obvious that Peterborough and this weekends opponents Pompey hate us though.
