Was absolutely shocked and saddened when I switched over SSN this morning, you just didn't expect anything to appear like this.

Stomach is still churning now, just shocking news.

If Kingy plays on Tuesday, I think it's only right that Nigel gives him the armband and every club up and down England throughout the leagues have 1-2 minute silence.

I know when all the Giggs & Imogen stuff came out earlier in the year the likes of Speed, Michael Owen & others had their names mentioned with all the rumours. Maybe there was something like that coming out that upset him? God knows.

Not sure if it's already been mentioned but John Hartson was supposed to be doing co-commentary of 5Live today and went home when he heard the news, couldn't face talking about football. Shay Given might have asked to be excused from the Villa game as was mentioned, he was certainly in tears with the minute's applause earlier.

I'm just shocked really. He was a happily married millionaire and yet he kills himself. Strange.

Depends if he was suffering from depression, if so then it can be like getting up every day and being so downbeat and empty but putting on a false smile to try and keep those you love from suspecting.

Apparently men who suffer rarely seek help and it come's out of the blue.

Depression can be well hidden, if indeed it was linked to depression. You should read "A Life Too Short" about the life and death of Germany and Hanover goalkeeper Robert Enke who took his own life a couple of years ago despite the fact that he was successful and wealthy.

If he'd had the call from one of the papers that they were going to run a story like that on him that will give the Leveson inquiry a bit of an edge

Family... tick

Job he loved... tick

Lovely looking misses... tick

Two kids he loved... tick

Lots of friends... tick

Something does not add up.

I wont use the 'great' word because it's used far too often but speed was a bloody decent midfielder who kept up a high level of performance consistently whist staying relatively injury free.

And despite a shaky start to management at Sheffield United the last three games as Wales Manager were starting to show he has something about him as a coach also.

I guess in the fullness of time we will find out what was going on, but for his kids sake alone surely he could have found a way to not break their hearts in such a tragic way.

RIP Such a waste.

Are you for real? No-one should be made captain just because someone they know died. What about Billy Sharpe? His kid died, which is a lot worse.

You my friend, are a moron.

RIP Gary Speed.

That's depression though. You can seem to have everything, but still have a feeling over emptiness you can't shake. Depression the illness isn't that feeling you get when your dumped, or a family member dies, or you lose your job, it's something in you, that you can't help feeling. Far more man commit suicide because they won't talk about it too.

Very sad news. Seemed to have so much to live for. Was out with my children earlier today buying Christmas decorations to put up. The joy on their faces was fantastic. It makes me upset to think about the contrast for his kids.

Heard Savage on Radio 5 whilst driving in to work. Sounded gutted and just could not fathom why he would take his own life. Absolutely no indication that he was depressed or any sign that he was unhappy. RIP Gary Speed. A true gent.

Billy Sharp was made captain in that game.

Yeah that's the point I was making, the situation was a lot worse. But I don't agree with that either. You shouldn't disrupt your team and captain just because of an even that has nothing to do with our particular football club.

It is an awful thing but shouldn't change the way we are set up at all.

I am diagnosed with depression like many other people, I have health reasons for my depression.

Most depression has a trigger, it's not something that just comes upon you with no apparent cause.

Like I said before, it's the family and kids I feel so sorry for that their Dad could not be strong enough for them to deal with whatever demons and dark places he was experiencing.

I suppose in the fullness of time whatever was going on will come out.

I think sometimes it can be a deep rooted thing, not necessarily obvious at first but something, or maybe a number of things that eat away at you over time, and affects the way you look at everything else and it all builds up.

RIP, such a shock.
