He is one pace behind all the time. The body language and complaints from his team mates when he tried to lob the keeper from 45 yards also suggest the boys are not confident in him either. Today was no different to any other recent game, King was missing, Wellens slow, Bamba brilliant at times but frustratingly mistake laden at others, Mills fairly solid, Gallagher isolated, he plays a kicker role, does nothing all game until a set piece, shlupp pushed too wide and to little experience. Abe did well, but once again the lack of wingers was an issue. Anyway, the Oracle that is the wife summed it up better than any of my ramblings... " they might be good individuals but they are not a team " can't disagree with her there...

I've not rated Wellens in recent weeks, but the reaction he got when he was subbed was pathetic, same goes for Beckford last week. Does not help at all. On a brighter note I thought Schlupp looked quality today.
Kitchandro Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 It's the atmosphere that is created, which doesn't help, the football on the pitch is naff and the performances are terrible but the fans aren't helping the matter by constantly moaning. All you did was take a few things I said and claim I 100% blame that, just tried to take some of the players and management as our situation isn't the greatest. Why bother mentioning it? It's really not our fault that we are crap so why hint that it partly is? WTF are the fans supposed to do? It's fvcking depressing going to the football this season. We try and get behind the team but it makes no bleeding difference. They show no passion even though they're getting paid for it so why should we when we are paying to watch it?

Callabinho Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 This has been happening all season, under Sven too, the midfielders are a disgrace, none of them want the ball and none of them want to take responsibility. They want to shift the pressure on to the defence and make them hoof it and take the stick. They also don't track back and we wonder why they are outnumbered and struggling to defend? I can't say the defenders weren't crap today but they get little help. The strikers could argue the same. Fernandes played some games didn't he? And we played crap in some of them as well didn't we? A decent player he is, a committed player he's not, the answer to all our midfield problems he isn't either. I still have more faith in Nigel than I did Sven. I suppose you're right regarding Fernandes, and if he doesn't want to be here then we can't have him here, the atmosphere is bad enough. We need an enforcer some body who has both the confidence and effective with the ball, however all this news of falling out could impact the targets decisions?

What worried me most was around the 70 minute mark, when we just seemed to run out of steam. Portsmouth were passing it around us, and our players just looked absolutely shattered. We couldn't get out of our half. Our fitness levels shouldn't be that bad. As for the midfield, I agree with most of what's been said. King was totally anonymous and was the worst of the three, Wellens wasn't as bad as he was at Doncaster a couple of weeks back but the game pretty much passed him by, whilst Abe got his foot in regularly and protected the back 4 at times but he has no physical strength and gets brushed off the ball so easily. The midfield in general just has no physical strength and that has to be rectified. Bamba is NOT the answer to that problem though. Defensively we were alright, at times we looked solid and at times we looked all over the place. Mills' distribution wasn't great, but when you have no simple passes on (as the midfielders don't regularly make themselves available) then you have to go long. No player can repeatedly hit his target 50 yards away, so the blame doesn't entirely lie with Mills. Peltier's form has really dipped over recent weeks following a good start to his Leicester career, and Bamba still has his moments. I'm still happy to see Bamba at CB though. Konchesky was decent today. Kasper made some shite decisions over the game, maybe had memories of the Ipswich goal in his mind when he came rushing out for crosses that he should've been nowhere near. Thought Schlupp did okay but faded out the game, Gallagher's set-pieces were first rate (bar a few duff corners) but did little else, and Nugent put himself about, got a goal but then got taken off. Would've kept him on personally. Overall, I wasn't expecting much and didn't get much. Hopefully Nigel can sort out these issues in January, it's fairly obvious what needs to be sorted and I trust that he can do that.

Yeh perhaps, also because we are now a midtable side playing poorly it's not as relevant that we've got money. Would the Hull players even want to come? January is shit or bust, we need a new midfield. A defensive midfielder (which Fernandes was right for if he had wanted to be here) a creative midfielder and 2 pacey wingers. I don't want to see any oif our current central midfielders in the team after January. Fingers crossed.

A couple of central midfielders and someone to whip the ball in from the wing and we would look quite good. We are hard to score against and both Beckford and Nugent could cut it if the service was there. As usual, because we expect too much we can only be disappointed when we fail to be top after 2 games. With a bit more steel in the middle and a bit more creativity too we could still mount a late challenge for the play offs but in reality, it is more likely to be next season now, as long as Top doesn't get an itchy trigger finger too soon.

No invention, no effort and worst of all, no prospect of either of the first two things being rectified any time soon. It speaks volumes about the lack of ideas on the ball that it appears that our number one tactic appears to be to get Schmeichel on the ball and have him hoof it to Beckford or Nugent. About 10 minutes from the end, Pompey had a free kick that they were about to swing in and Pearson was on the touchline bellowing at Schmeichel (who at this point didn't have- and ultimately never gained - possession) that Beckford was standing in 5 yards of space (if that) on the touchline. What does it say about our players and manager that that is the best they can come up with? Wellens was less ponderous today but still too slow. King was absolutely crap; I've stood up for him for the last 3 months but he really took the biscuit today. Slow, uninvolved and worse than that, disinterested. Bert has highlighted the first half break where King got in the way of whoever was in possession when he should have been hurtling into the box (and a few months back would have been hurtling into the box). I thought Abe was better today than on Monday, but other opinions are available. Konchesky had his worst game for a while, as did Schmeichel. I have made my feelings on Mills clear in another thread, but he's embarrassing on the ball. I've been saying for weeks that Danns has to start in central midfield and whilst the first 70 minutes added credence to that view, sadly when he came on he was pants as well, although our passing tempo picked up noticeably when he was on the ball. This is not going to get any better until a fast, possession-based game is brought in, as we had in January and February last year. With the exception of Nugent, Tunchev, Konchesky and the grossly out-of-form King we do not have the players to do this right now.

Fooking joke When NP took over we were 12 pts off 2nd... we're still 12 pts, so for all our shitness we're keeping pace Coincidentally we were 12 pts off 2nd when Sven took over too, and by the time we had racked up 24 games (like currently) we were 11 pts off 2nd (and Sven had 6 extra games, 2 international breaks & emergency loan window, or whatever it's called where Vassell joined us... to improve things, none of the luxuries afforded to NP) So in comparison to last year with regards to distance from 2nd place... we are 1pt worse off from last year.
