Sven - was he that bad?

Recommended Posts

He paid 5 million for Matt Mills, he put players like St Ledger on 20k a week, he gave Wellens a huge pay rise and a new 3 and a half year contract in March, he had limitless funds and purchased Neil Danns, despite having nearly a year in charge he was scurrying around at 7pm on deadline day still looking for a striker he knew he needed 6 months earlier.

He wasnt just bad, he was a dangerous lunatic.

I thought Neville did all of that?

What running around for 6 months trying to buy a striker?

He might agree the contracts with Sven leaning on his shoulder I suppose, to be honest everyone at the club at the minute seems a bit clueless.

Yes Sven was sh!t; tactically inept, couldn't motivate, brought in rubbish.

As George Carin once said, 'Rubbish in, Rubbish out'

Calls for more width had nothing to do with playing Gallagher out there - the bloke has his strengths but operating a winger isn't one of them. The truth is we haven't got two wingers. Even in using Schlupp out wide we actually negated the things he's good at - something we do time and again with wide players in the name of protecting what is really quite a vulnerable defence.

There's been mention of Wayne Brown - one of the worst distibutors of a ball I've ever seen in a City shirt. But Brown was a terrific organiser and competitor. I'd doubt Bamba would have been playing everyone onside for Portsmouth's goal under Brown's watchful eye. I don't say we've missed him because he was at the end of his shelf life as a footballer but he was a vital cog while he was here.

The biggest problem was that he and Hobbs were both such poor passers that there was rarely a real fluidity between defence and attack. We have the same problem now without the organisation...and Tunchev, the best apparent solution, gets lef on the sidelines for no other reason that i can imagine than we paid so much for Mills, he the captain, Pearson doesn't want to drop him and Bamba is almost similarly regarded.

I believe Sven would of stayed longer if the owners hadn't of felt the pressure to bring Martin O Neill in. The story about the owners approaching O Neill and him refusing to talk because we already had a manager makes alot of sense and to me sounds like something he would of said. At the time I think the owners knew if they didn't act quick he would be snapped up by a Premiership team sooner or later. I know the story was only speculation but it makes alot of sense why Sven was dismissed so soon and why the board ending up making Pearson their 1st choice once O Neill expressed no interest.

Under Sven I am still alittle baffled as to how the 4-3-3 didn't work I felt Nugent and Vassell wide attackers with Beckford in the center could of had great potential if Vassell hadn't of been injured Sven did make mistakes but don't all managers? We just need to be more patient and allow a manager to build

I wasn't a Sven hater and I'd have given him more time but I'd lost a lot of faith in him by the time he'd gone. His biggest fault was his transfer policy, does anyone think Beckford will score more than Fryatt? Is Mills £4million better than Hobbs?Although he signed some decent players he's also signed some players who even he rarely started, lots of central midfielders and no width. On reflection you have to question his motives in some of his signings.

The Sven era was one of my favourites because we never knew which Leicester city would turn up and on the day we'd destroy some teams playing the type of football we could only dream of in the days of Pearson. This was also winning football, and you cannot forget he got a team that was bottom to championship winning form between October and February with davies naughton vassel and yakubu he only real signing at that time. It was an exciting time in the clubs history and I felt we were slowly evolving under him this season, with the 8 game unbeaten run I don't think one bad game at the office against millwall and an unfortunate defeat at brum should have resulted in the sack. Bad bad decision

Sven was that bad. A lot of his signings were meaningless and bad, he completely blunted our attacking play this year (for the most part) and there was no progression from when he first came in, so he absolutely deserved to be sacked imo. Hopefully Pearson will be given at least the same amount of time to get his stamp onto the team before they even contemplate sacking him.

Sven clearly attempted the "Scatter-gun" approach by attempting to buy the best players in the championship with no real clue as to how to fit them into an effective system

If, in March, we are in the same position as we are now I will understand the "Pearson haters" views but until then let him mould his team.

I enjoyed watching us play regularly last season (at home, away was very poor) because we tried to entertain and scored plenty of goals.

This year we had nowhere near the same fluency and ruthlessness to our play.

I don't think we'd be in a much better position under Sven.

Err... You might want to get your facts straight:

John Paintsil - formerly with Fulham

Jermaine Beckford - formerly with Everton

Lee Peltier - formerly with Huddersfield

Konchesky - formerly with Liverpool

Michael Ball - Manchester City

Michael Johnson - Manchester City

Gelson Fernandes - Chievo Verona/St. Etienne

Darius Vassell - Ankaragücü

Sol Bamba - Hibernian

Most of Sven's signings were either playing in the Premier League or abroad before they came here. Just sayin'.

 - woah woah woah, hold on there - from bottom of the table and a points per game ratio that would see not only relegation but one of the worst points tallies in the history of this division if extrapolated over the season when he arrived to 2 points off the play-offs and only a couple of defeats in the past 2 months when he left.

If that isn't progression then Finners is the bastard child of Nick Griffin and Jeremy Clarkson.

Again... There is no point to this thread. Not really.

What is still clear is that some loved Sven, others didn't.

It's now in the past.. Leave it there and let's discuss what's now important.

At the time during the summer when Sven was making all these signings I don't remember many fans on here saying 'oh not him buying him will be a mistake' from what I remember most of us were very optimistic about the signings and as far as we were concerned the more players he bought in the better

Sven saved us from relegation then honestly he had a really tough job from there to get us promoted but he gave it a shot and got us fairly close. however some decisions last season were shocking (ricardo, dropping vitor over bruma). but personally last season was a good achievment. However this season we were far to inconsistent beating brighton, southampton and derby and then losing to the likes of milwall and birmingham away. However considering we were only a few points the play offs and look at us now. in general IMO we should have kept sven and we would have got play offs minimum. the oweners made a mistake in sacking him and the proof is there when you look at the championship table. but still we should give time to nigel and i hope he can get us promotion but honestly dont think he will.

Nigel took a very good League 1 side to within a game or 2 of the Premier League but clearly, even if we had gone up at that point, a serious rebuild was on the cards. Sven had a go at that and bought the best players available that were prepared to come to Leicester - should have had more time to follow it through but didn't - the board should be reminded that they screwed up at every opportunity so that they don't do the same thing to Nige half way through his rebuild when it comes - slagging off players seems futile, especially as almost unanimously on here Yakubu was slated and he doesn't look that bad at the moment - any players that have generally got themselves to this level can be motivated into a good team, Sven failed/ran out of time, let's hope Nige is treated with a little more respect.

He won something like 7 out of his last 35 games... With unlimited resources, that's abysmal

He was an appalling manager who has possibly ruined the club for years

As people like to state the term FACT at the end of some crap sentence....

Sven is a BETTER manager FACT!

As someone stated in this thread 'Pearson tried to address the no width issue in a team he inherited from Sven with Gallagher and dyer to no effect' once again them pair were signed by Pearson during his first spell here! The reason we have no wingers is also because we never had any decent ones when Pearson was here last time!

Matt Mills for 5million was a joke, but at the time not many people were complaining we had just signed a goal scoring centre back, one of the best defenders in the league on current form, a man who lead his side out at Wembley a couple of months ago and a man destined for the Premier league.

Unlimited budget? Maybe but the main aim was for proven championship players, Neil Danns was Palaces best player last season, a goal scoring midfielder, their best player when they came to the King Power, on his way to play Champions league football, at the time yes it looked a good signing.

Wellens was given his extension last season, at that time our best player and with Birmingham interested everyone was relieved to see him sign that new deal.

If St Ledger is on 20k a week then that's just stupid but does anyone even know that for sure? And doesnt Andrew Neville sort that out?

People may not of complained but Sven was the man who should be getting these decisions right regardless of what the fans think. That is why he was paid a huge sum of money, while some mistakes do get made by even the best managers Sven just consistently got it wrong...

I can't understand how Pearson hasn't organised his team better since his return. I thought that the team would improve but they seem to suffering a huge lack of confidence.

When I look at Birmingham, they lost players like, Danns, Jerome, Johnson and Larsson (I think), and yet Hughton seems to have them organised and winning games.

I know Pearson has had a short amount of time here, but we are in relegation form, not promotion.

I really hope we can string a few wins together we can get up the table.

Not going through a big argument to point out stuff that has already been mentioned.

I was optimistic when Sven first arrived but over time doubt's began to grow and this season they started to become certainties from what i was seeing, he was failing, the owner's saw he was failing and sacked him.

He built a team last season with, (expensive in wage's,) prem loans that started really well but faded badly after our game plan was sussed by other team's.

Sven never changed the plan and we never reached the playoff's inspite of getting within touching distance well before xmas.

Preseason he started a complete team overhaul with a large budget but i was a little worried with what he had brought but figured he knew what he was doing and continued to back him .

Then after all the preseason training, talking and new signing's and the team still not being finished in term's of getting personnel in apparently :| we started where we had left off, inconsistent and not being good enough to break into the playoff's.

Toward's the end Sven brought in Beckford who he stated was the final piece in the jigsaw and his Iceman  who was going to score goal's for fun but the form did not just continue but we we're getting worst.

Anyone who watched his final game in charge can't really say it was any different to present game's, in fact in present game's we have had more fight in the team that was how poor we we're in that game.

Nigel inherited a team that needed not just new personnel but a new work ethic and time.

If he get's the player's he want's we can still mount a challenge, if not we may have to wait until the end of the season to bring in the player's required.

Fifteen not Seven, perhaps you were looking at the wrong teams performances and that's why you wanted him sacked? Hope Top wasn't looking at the same ones as you

Hull, Swansea, Millwall, Sheff Utd, Barnsley, Derby, Bristol, Scunthorpe, Burnley, Watford, Ipswich, Coventry, Southampton, Brighton, Derby, Watford (16 in 35) - interesting maths you've done.

Add into that draws v Preston, Coventry, Middlesbrough, Crystal Palace, Doncaster, Florist, Barnsley, Cardiff, Middlesbrough in that time and it's only 10 defeats in his final 35, picking up 57 points in 35 games - 1.62857... points per game and would lead to 74.914... (essentially 75) points over the course of a season - Hardly out of form ey?

Or if you want his final 46 games: 5 more wins, 2 more draws, 4 more defeats leading to - in on season worth of games - 21 wins, 11 draws, 14 defeats and indeed 74 points. Seems like good enough for play-offs if you ask me.
