stockyfox Posted 4 January 2012 Posted 4 January 2012 you defend someone's right to be biased, unfair and more often than not, fundamentally wrong? fair enough, but I pay £150 a year to the BBC who employ him, and then another £35 to have the privilege to listen to BBC radio Leicester over the Internet (surely that's wrong?!), so as his 'employer' I feel entitled to voice my opinion: he sucks. I've been out most of the day and have been quite astounded how this thread has moved on. However, it seems that from the comment above and also one in a similar vein by Babylon earlier in the thread, that I was condoning the comments of Alan Young whilst decrying those who have levelled criticism at him. Understand this, what I am defending and will always defend is the right to freedom of speech whether it is the comments of Alan Young or indeed any other person including those who have posted to this thread. That principle is fundamental to our democracy. To deny that right is tantamount to censorship. My criticism centres on the tone and bitterness of those criticisms. It seems that in order to give further weight to their views, some not only strongly disagree but have to express themselves with comments that are tinged with hate, ridicule and even abuse. Welll, as has been expressed elsewhere in this thread, there are laws pertaining to defamation of character and to my mind, some people sail pretty close to the wind - but that's their look out. So all I'm saying is we are all on the same side, we all have our different views, but agree to differ ( which is what Alex and I do - and we are still good friends - I hope!) If you meet up with Alan in the pub, buy him a pint, argue the toss as much as you like, but have a laugh, shake hands and go your separate ways.
Bettsj2 Posted 4 January 2012 Posted 4 January 2012 Imagine how he would have reacted if it was Beckford who got sent off instead of Howard. His hate towards Beckford is exactly the same as last year with Yakubu and listening to it is quite embarrassing. I would love to hear the commentary following Bruma's sending off at Middlesborough last year. See how it compares to the Howard incident.
davieG Posted 4 January 2012 Posted 4 January 2012 accusations??? steve howard got sent off but beckford was the one that got slated.. how much clearer does it have to be Well I didn't hear it and wasn't there to compare the situations so I can't be specific and therefore I was talking in general terms.
flowwolf Posted 5 January 2012 Posted 5 January 2012 Well at least he is not bland and does provoke reactions from people. If he was even handed all the while he would not be worth listening to would he ? And we would not be having this debate on here. So well done youngy even though you are a controversial old git.
spionfox Posted 5 January 2012 Posted 5 January 2012 I think it has been slightly overlooked, but Beckford surely was a little unprofessional in that he knows the rules about jewellery and should have made sure he was ready to come on to the pitch. Either that or else the coaching staff are equally culpable.

Yes maybe he was unprofessional... but there in lies the point. What was more unprofessional, him forgetting to take his ring off, or Howard getting sent off for being a petulant git. One gets a strip torn off him, the other defended. I think all people are asking for is some consistency.
Corky Posted 5 January 2012 Posted 5 January 2012 Alan, Alan Young, Alan Young, Alan, Alan Young. We love you really

I think all people are asking for is some consistency. I'd say Youngy is if nothing else remarkably consistent. He can't stand fanny merchants and makes this clear at every opportunity, regardless of whether the fm in question is playing well or badly. Wearing jewellery - fanny, calling the lino a ginger c - not fanny.

There is an argument, on purely footballing grounds, for saying that Howard should never play for us again. This sort of behaviour from an experienced pro simply helps to reinforce that view.

There's plenty of arguments for Howard never playing for us again .... add this to the list ... but it's about 23rd for me!
Chrysalis Posted 6 January 2012 Posted 6 January 2012 Stringers just as bad !!!! I don't want opinions just commentary on the game !!! I feel between the two they have started the bad feeling towards certain players . It started with Ricardo ,we brought weale back we all know how that turned out!!!! The yak was another and bamba is also one who young does nt like ... I have been every home game and five away , drive home listening too the moan in cringeing at youngs summery and our mongol callers who haven't been too the game slagging players off who have played well in my opinion! To be fair ricardo was poor every time I "seen" him play. Regarding beckford and the yak, he defenitly did not bad mouth yak every game, as I remember him praising him numerous times. I got little to comment on beckford as he isnt banging them in so to me he isnt doing what we paid 4 million for. Bamba seems to get a lot of stick tho. I think the biggest issue tho is not the players he is giving stick to but rather that he refuses to give stick to his favourites, probably wellens been the #1 favourite.
Chrysalis Posted 6 January 2012 Posted 6 January 2012 Being an ST holder means I see all of the home games. Unfortunately it means having to listen to RL for the away matches. When I talk the people around me who have been to the away games, it becomes clear that what you hear from Alan Young is not a true reflection as to how players/team have performed. Needless to say peoples opinions differ, ask a dozen people whom they thought was the best player and you'll probably get nine different answers! I do agree that some of his comments are awful, at the end of the day it's best not to base a match / player analysis on someone elses opinion. It's akin to watching a game on TV and listening to the commentators analysis, you tend to be swayed by his opinion. Far better to watch it with no sound, you can then form your own opinion, then rightly or wrongly you can air your views. Tha maybe true but I remember a couple years back when we had that scottish defender at the club, at the time a lot on here who go to games were saying how well we played in games etc. I watched a game on sky and we were quite dire to be frank, I came on this forum expecting people to say we had a one off bad game or something but was shocked to read people saying we played well, especially the lecis defender who stood like a statue letting ipswich get their early goal, I sat her ethinking were we watching the same games. I cant remember his name now sorry.
Danny the Fox 95 Posted 6 January 2012 Posted 6 January 2012 Alan, Alan Young, Alan Young, Alan, Alan Young. We love you really No we don't
Bangkok Mick Posted 6 January 2012 Posted 6 January 2012 Once these ex pros with no other means of income get on the BBC payroll they become total f**kin arseh*les. Message to A. Young: You were good back in the day but have no more right to give your opinion on the modern game and todays players than the average City fan. You have no unique insight into the players, the club, current issues, tactics than anyone else. You`re no more in touch than the avearge fan. You add nothing that the avearge footie fan couldn`t say. And your Scottish accent is mildly iritating. F**k off.
C.J Posted 6 January 2012 Posted 6 January 2012 neil danns @dannzy1 1m listened to iplayer before, and have to say alan young does not do it for me, has his favourites me thinks Thats because he preferes Lee Danns over you. For the record, carry on with the commentary Youngy. Matt Piper anyone?

Benji Posted 7 January 2012 Posted 7 January 2012 I quite like his "we shouldn't talk about referees but..." sentence starter that comes up in every game without fail.

5waller5 Posted 7 January 2012 Posted 7 January 2012 Unfortunately didn't get my arse into gear to get a ticket quickly enough so was subjected to AY and Stringer today ..... To be fair .... thought they were OK and clearly AY was very careful about what he said and attempted to be positive about Beckford. I think Stringer's OK but wish he'd stop chatting Youngy up and tell us where the ball actually is on the pitch!
Mack Posted 7 January 2012 Posted 7 January 2012 I didn't go today either and listened to the radio and thought Young and Stringer were much better.
Rob1742 Posted 8 January 2012 Posted 8 January 2012 It's quite simple, it's a local small budget radio show and they present the Leicester City matches. It is low budget as I said, so unfortunately they are never going to be able to get Alan Hanson doing Youngys job. Now you have a choice, you can either have an ex pro doing it, who wants to do it, who does have an affinity to the fans as he used to play for us. Or you could go back to the days of someone like Neville Foulger who clearly hadn't played the game and often didn't even see substitutions happening. Youngy is a pundit, he has a view, and I personally would prefer to listen to a view of someone who has played the game rather than someone who hasn't. Also very difficult for him when oiks ring up after the game who clearly do not have a clue about the game, never even attended it and he has to engage with them. Personally I would struggle to engage with most of the callers. I never listened to radio Leicester for years when they didn't have a footballer helping with the commentary, but now will as at least you will get an idea as to how the game is going. With regards to the after match phone in, I turn off as I cannot understand why anyone would think the public wants to hear an opinion of someone nobody knows, who has a random comment. It then becomes pointless car crash radio. Leave the chap alone, he did a good job for us in his day, trying to get back on his feet and is giving a footballers opinion. He is also quite critical, and says what he thinks, so you have to admire the fact he isn't playing the political card all the time.
